THINGS I HAVE SEEN AND HEARD Last weekend was a rollercoaster ride! There was a tremendous amount happening here at St. Antoninus as well as being the weekend that new assignments are announced throughout the Archdiocese of Cincinnati. First, last Sunday we had our First Holy Communion Mass for our second grade school and prep students. It was a magnificent day, the weather notwithstanding, for all of our First Communicants to come to the Altar of the Lord and to receive the Body and Blood of Jesus for the very first time. One of the things that I mentioned in the homily for the First Communion Mass was about the effects of receiving Our Lord. Receiving worthily, in the state of grace, helps us to grow in our relationship with God, grow in holiness of life, and helps us to become more like Christ, and to carry the presence of Christ within us to others we encounter in our lives, thus empowering us to become agents of the new evangelization, proclaimers of Christ and His love to others. Celebrating First Communion is one of my favorite things to do as a priest, and it is always my prayer that we all remember the day when we first received Our Lord, and strive to always receive Him as we first did on the day of our First Communion. Second, last week I received a phone call from Bishop Binzer informing me that I had been appointed Parochial Vicar of St. James Parish in White Oak, and that Fr. Ron Haft has been appointed Pastor of St. Antoninus, all effective July 1st. This is something that I asked for, after much prayer and discernment, as well as counseling and consultation with the bishop and other priests. I came to the conclusion that stepping away from administration was the Lord’s will for me, and what is best for my ministry and my health right now. The bishops and priests’ personnel board agreed with that, and I am looking forward to my assignment at St. James, while at the same time I know that I will also miss St. Antoninus. As with any change of assignment I have ever had, the feelings I have are a mixture of joy and sadness. I hope you will keep in touch, and I know you will welcome Fr. Haft with open arms and hearts as you did me. Please know I love all of you, and I will continue to pray for you as I hope you will for me. We still have six weeks together, so may Our Lord bless this time remaining, and guide us all in His will. Take Good Care,

Fr. Bryan

E D U C AT I O N C O M M I S S I O N Beth Joecken My name is Beth Joecken. My husband Troy and I joined St. Antoninus in 2013 because we felt that the school and parish community were the best fit for our family. We have two children, Henry (3rd grade) and Evelyn (2nd grade). I graduated from Seton High School in 1995, attended Butler University and currently work full time as a pharmacist. I am active in PTO and serve as a co-chair of the Spiritwear committee. I also help coordinate Lego Club and have previously served as a leader of the St. Antoninus MOPS group. I am passionate about learning and would love the opportunity to serve on Education Commission to advance the education of our children at St. Antoninus.

Michelle Kramer Hello. My name is Michelle Kramer, and my husband, Denny, and I, along with our children, have been members of St. Antoninus parish for three years. We have three children attending St. Antoninus: Jenna, grade 7; Ethan, grade 5; and and Max, grade 2. Our oldest, Amanda, graduated last year and is a freshman at Seton. In our short time here, I have come to love our school and parish community. I am involved as a volunteer in the library and with the book fair. I have become a substitute teacher so that I can dedicate even more of my time to our students. In fact, I have been a long-term sub for the seventh and eighth grades since the beginning of March. I believe with my passion for kids and for our community, I could be an asset to the Education Commission. I believe in the importance of

collaboration and feel that I can be a great liaison between our school parents and our faculty and staff. Thank you for your consideration.

Jen Mueller Hello St. Antoninus Community! My name is Jen Mueller and my husband Eric and I have been parishioners since 2008. We have 4 children: Ava in 4th grade, Will in 2nd grade, Audrey will be in kindergarten next year and Finley is 3. Because of them, I will have a vested interest in the future of our school and parish community for many years to come. I have the energy and enthusiasm to work hard to help make our school even better, which is why I'm running for Education Commission. Some of my previous volunteer positions include PTO President, PTO Treasurer and Room Mom. I look forward to giving my time in a new way, so thank you for your consideration.

Voting will take place next weekend of May 20 & 21, 2017

I am a graduate of St. Antoninus, and now my grandchildren are, and will be attending school here. This gives me a vested interest in both the Church and the School. My last two jobs before retirement were, Vice President of Manufacturing for Whiting Manufacturing. After Whiting, I took a vocational position at Cincinnati Association for the Blind and Visually Impaired. I have been retired for the last 4 years. I lead the Fatima Prayer Group on Monday nights at 7:00 PM. I am a daily communicant, and schedule the Adult servers. I am committed to keeping St. Antoninus' high standard both in school and worship. I

ask for your vote. Thank you.

Our youngest child, Liam, is 3 and he attends A Child's Garden which is located on our St. Antoninus campus. I am a stay at home mom, with a nursing background. I worked as a pediatric nurse for 11 years starting at Cincinnati Children's, Sydney Children's in Sydney, Australia and finally at Morristown Memorial in New Jersey before coming back home to the west side of Cincinnati. I have served on the board for the preschool my girls attended in New Jersey for 3 years, served

as VP of the Whitehouse Station moms club in NJ for 2 years and most recently served on the board at Oak Hills Swim and Racquet club for 1 year. Over the past three years at St. Antoninus, I have been very involved in our school and parish. For three years, I have helped with the Main-A-vent, our yearly parish fundraiser. The past two years I have been the Main-A-vent chair for procurement, bringing in many donations and gifts for this event. I have enjoyed being involved in this fun event and getting to know the rectory staff and school families. This year I have also been a part of the St. Antoninus Network of Care by answering phones. I volunteered as a 1st grade room mom, a cafeteria volunteer and also a festival volunteer. During the past year, our parish and school have experienced a lot of change. The future is bright and I would like to help our new incoming pastor at St. Antoninus move forward and insure our new and established parishioners feel welcome and become engaged as our parish continues to grow. Thank you for your nomination.

Reading I: Acts of the Apostles 6:1-7: Previous readings

for the Easter Season from Acts show the mission of Jesus

continuing through the work of the early Church, rapidly

spreading among Jews, and finally throughout the Gentile

world. As with the Church today, the work of spreading

the Gospel did not always proceed smoothly. As the

Christian community grew, various needs and even

conflicts sometimes called for restructuring of ministries.

Our first reading for Mass this weekend makes reference

to two groups in the early community, identified by their

backgrounds prior to their conversion: the Hellenists and

the Hebrews. The Hellenists were Jews who had been

born and lived for a time outside Palestine. They spoke

Greek and used the Greek translation of Scripture in their

synagogues. The Hebrews were Jews born in Palestine,

who spoke Aramaic and used the Hebrew Bible in their

synagogues. This difference of backgrounds naturally

carried over into the Christian community during its early

years, but it is incorrect to see it as divisive. This chapter

from Acts tells us about the establishment by the apostles

of “the seven” (verse 3), a second identifiable group of

disciples entrusted with a ministry in the Church (the first

of course was “the twelve”). In some Catholic

translations of the Bible, this chapter in Acts is subtitled

“the appointment of the seven deacons.” St. Luke in

writing Acts used the diakonia which means service. It is

not clear whether the diaconate as we know it today

derives directly from these seven men. However, Biblical

scholars believe it is at least possible that the ministry

described in this passage played a part in instituting the

diaconate proper. In any event, the diaconate is a form of

sacred office of apostolic origin. The apostles establish

the seven in their office or ministry through prayer and

the laying on of hands. Christians have retained this rite

as can be seen quite often in Acts. In this case it is a rite

for the ordination of ministers of the Church: the first

instance of sacred ordination reported by Acts.

Responsorial Psalm: Psalm 33: 1-2, 4-5, 18-19 (22):

Psalm 33 is a psalm full of praise for God, man’s creator

and provider. In this psalm the psalmist tells us that

praise of God calls for uprightness of heart combined with

external solemnity: the lyre and the harp were used by

the Levites in worship. The psalmist first focuses on

BREAKING OPEN THE WORD with Kathy O ’Connor FIFTH SUNDAY OF EASTER

God Himself; He has revealed Himself always to be

faithful. The psalmist is in awe of God’s providence over

mankind. None of us can be saved by our own strength.

We owe everything to God’s help.

Reading II: 1 Peter 2:4-9: This letter is attributed to St.

Peter and addresses Christians living in an environment

hostile to their way of life. The sacred writer uses the

idea of constructing a building (verses 4-8) to explain

that Christians together make up the one, true people

of God. The whole passage is built on quotations from

the Old Testament, possibly ones used in early apostolic

catechesis. The Church is like a spiritual building of

which Christ is the cornerstone, or, the stone which

supports the whole structure. Christians must be living

stones united to Christ by faith and grace. The closer

their union with Christ the stronger the building. One of

the early theologians of the Church explains: “All of us

who believe in Christ Jesus are called living stones. If

you who are listening to me want to prepare yourself

better for the construction of the building and be one of

the stones closest to the foundation, you need to realize

that Christ Himself is the foundation of the building we

are describing.” St. Peter in this passage writes that for

those who do not believe in Christ, the cornerstone

becomes a “stone that will make men stumble, a rock

that will make them fall (verse 8).” In contrast with

those who reject faith, believers form the true Israel,

the true people of God.

Gospel: John 14: 1-12: On the second Sunday of Easter the Gospel reading recounted the risen Christ’s bestowal of the Spirit on the disciples. Today, the Church recalls Jesus’ last supper promise to do so. At the last supper the apostles only dimly grasped the assurance of the Spirit, but they would more fully understand with hindsight later. Chapters 14-17 of St. John’s Gospel contains much significant material presented as what is called Jesus’ farewell discourse to His disciples during their supper before His Passion. It is easy to imagine that the atmosphere of the last supper was tense. The apostles knew that something was up and they were afraid, or at least unsettled. Jesus attempts to reassure them with an invitation to believe in Him and to let their hearts be not troubled. The Lord tells them He is going to prepare a place for them. He will “come again and will take you to Myself, that where I am you may be also.” Continued on next page.

For the week of May 13-20, 2017 In Memory of Mary Jane Fangmann

From Ruth Fangmann

C o n t i n u e d f r o m p r e v i o u s p a g e

The apostles did not really understand what Jesus was telling them, so Thomas asks the questions as to where He is

going. To this Jesus tells him “I am the way, the truth, and the life…” Jesus is the way to the Father through what He

teaches, for by staying faithful to His teaching we will reach heaven. Jesus is the only path linking heaven and earth. He

is the truth because by coming into this world He shows that God is faithful to His promise and He teaches the truth

about who God is. He is the life because from all eternity He has divine life with His Father and He makes us, through

grace, sharers in that divine life. The apostles are still finding Jesus’ words to be mysterious because they cannot grasp

the oneness of Father and Son, so Philip asks Him to show them the Father. Jesus chastises Philip for not recognizing His

divine condition through His human nature. All of the miracles that Jesus performed are proper to God and the apostles

seemingly don’t recognize God in their midst. Jesus’ incarnation, miracles, death, and resurrection revealed that God is

with us. In the final verse in this passage, Jesus promises He will make them sharers in His power so that God’s salvation

may be manifested through them. Jesus will suffer death, be buried, rise again, and then ascend into heaven. At that

point, His mission will be carried on by the apostles. Thus, the apostles’ power derives from Christ glorified.

Reflection: From ancient times philosophers have summed up the human condition as a quest to answer three

questions: What can I do? What can I know? What can I hope for? Jesus answers all of these questions not just with

doctrine but with His very person. “I am the way” can translate into: What should you do? Follow Jesus and do what He

did. “I am the truth” can translate into: What can you know? We can know everything if only we know Jesus, because in

knowing the Lord we know the truth; we know the secret behind the workings of the whole universe and the longings of

the human heart. “I am the life” means: What can you hope for? In Jesus and through Him we can hope for and expect

the fullness of life that we long for, even though we may not be able to put it into words. Jesus is Lord because He is

God become man. To see Him is to see God: He is in the Father and the Father is in Him. But seeing Him requires more

than bodily eyes; it requires faith. The apostle Philip had followed Jesus, lived with Him, and was taught by Him for

three years and he still didn’t recognize Him. How many of us have been going to Mass for years but still do not know

the Lord? When we look at Him do we see God? If we look at Jesus and do not see God perhaps our eyes and indeed

our lives need adjusting. If we do adjust our lives, trusting more in Jesus and less in our own limited understanding and

talent, our lives will gradually take on proportions far beyond what we can imagine. To live in a communion of

friendship and obedience with Christ is to live united to God Himself. The saints, past and present are proof this is true.

They are our brothers and sisters who, with God’s grace, have relinquished their futile attempts at controlling their

destiny and truly believed in Jesus. Perhaps if we have faith; if we follow the Way, the Truth, and the Life, our hearts

too can be untroubled. Remember, faith is the assurance of things hoped for.

The money you place in the St. Vincent de Paul Poor Box bring Christ’s love and compassion to the poor.
