Welcome to St. Augustine of Canterbury Episcopal Church! We are delighted that you have chosen to worship with us during this Season after Pentecost. For many Christians the weeks after Pentecost are called Ordinary Time, “ordinary” meaning in regu-lar rows or ranks undistinguished from another. This is the character of Ordinary Time, the days after Pentecost, the largest part of the church year, and most of our life. It is not a time of celebration that draws into wonder nor a time of crisis that causes one to change. Ordinary Time is a time of being. However, it must be said that this time is not without character and color, for during this season of the year we explore what it means to live in the eternal day that is ours through baptism into Christ’s eter-nal life. In this post Pentecostal season we explore what it means to be children of God, to be in Christ, and to be on fire with the Spirit. Like all of God’s creation, we are surrounded by the lush green that is present. It is a bountiful time of being. In these moments, we rest in the knowledge that we are transformed and empowered people experiencing the presence of the Spirit through the Word proclaimed and the Sac-raments shared. It is with that awareness we live lives in tune with the present and filled with God’s love toward all around us. Only then will our lives take on the vibrant green of the season, of ordinary life and yet deeply alive! If this is your first time in the Episcopal Church, everything you need to follow worship is in this Worship Guide. If you have any questions please to not hesitate to ask any member around you for help. I hope to meet you before and/or after worship, but just in case I do not, please fill out the connection card in your bulletin and place it in the offering plate so we can connect with you. Again, welcome to you and your family. Blessings,

Fr. Joseph C. Alsay +

Rector

Collect of the Day

Bishop The Lord be with you. People And also with you. Bishop Let us pray.

Grant us, O Lord, to trust in you with all our hearts; for, as you always resist the proud who confide in their own strength, so you never forsake those who make their boast of your mercy; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

+ THE LITURGY OF THE WORD +

Please be seated. Children’s Moment

After the Children’s Moment, children in the third grade and under are invited to follow the Cross and attend Children’s Chapel. At the point in the adult service known as “The Peace,” ushers can direct parents to the Children’s Chapel to retrieve their children. Those in kindergarten and younger may remain in their classroom until service is over.

The Lesson: Philemon 1-21

Lector A Reading from Paul’s Letter to Philemon.

Paul, a prisoner of Christ Jesus, and Timothy our brother,

To Philemon our dear friend and co-worker, to Apphia our sister, to Archippus our fellow soldier, and to the church in your house:

Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

When I remember you in my prayers, I always thank my God because I hear of your love for all the saints and your faith toward the Lord Jesus. I pray that the sharing of your faith may become effective when you perceive all the good that we may do for Christ. I have indeed received much joy and encouragement from your love, because the hearts of the saints have been refreshed through you, my brother.

For this reason, though I am bold enough in Christ to command you to do your duty, yet I would rather appeal to you on the basis of love-- and I, Paul, do this as an old man, and now also as a prisoner of Christ Jesus. I am appealing to you for my child, Onesimus, whose father I have become during my imprisonment. Formerly he was useless to you, but now he is indeed useful both to you and to me. I am sending him, that is, my own heart, back to you. I wanted to keep him with me, so that he might be of service to me in your place during my imprisonment for the gospel; but I preferred to do nothing without your consent, in order that your good deed might be voluntary and not something forced. Perhaps this is the reason he was separated from you for a while, so that you might have him back forever, no longer as a slave but more than a slave, a beloved brother-- especially to me but how much more to you, both in the flesh and in the Lord.

So if you consider me your partner, welcome him as you would welcome me. If he has wronged you in any way, or owes you anything, charge that to my account. I, Paul, am writing this with my own hand: I will repay it. I say nothing about your owing me even your own self. Yes, brother, let me have this benefit from you in the Lord! Refresh my heart in Christ. Confident of your obedience, I am writing to you, knowing that you will do even more than I say.

Lector The Word of the Lord. People Thanks be to God.

Please remain standing. Holy Gospel: Luke 14:25-33

Deacon The Holy Gospel of our Lord according to Luke. People Glory to you, Lord Christ.

Now large crowds were traveling with Jesus; and he turned and said to them, “Whoever comes to me and does not hate father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters, yes, and even life itself, cannot be my disciple. Whoever does not carry the cross and follow me cannot be my disciple. For which of you, intending to build a tower, does not first sit down and estimate the cost, to see whether he has enough to complete it? Otherwise, when

he has laid a foundation and is not able to finish, all who see it will begin to ridicule him, saying, ‘This fellow began to build and was not able to finish.’ Or what king, going out to wage war against another king, will not sit down first and consider whether he is able with ten thousand to oppose the one who comes against him with twenty thousand? If he cannot, then, while the other is still far away, he sends a delegation and asks for the terms of peace. So therefore, none of you can become my disciple if you do not give up all your possessions.”

Deacon The Gospel of the Lord. People Praise to you, Lord Christ.

Please stand or kneel. Eucharistic Prayer A

Holy and gracious Father: In your infinite love you made us for yourself; and, when we had fallen into sin and become subject to evil and death, you, in your mercy, sent Jesus Christ, your only and eternal Son, to share our human nature, to live and die as one of us, to reconcile us to you, the God and Father of all.

He stretched out his arms upon the cross, and offered himself, in obedience to your will, a perfect sacrifice for the whole world.

On the night he was handed over to suffering and death, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said, “Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.”

After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, “Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me.”

Therefore we proclaim the mystery of faith:

Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again.

We celebrate the memorial of our redemption, O Father, in this sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving. Recalling his death, resurrection, and ascension, we offer you these gifts.

Sanctify them by your Holy Spirit to be for your people the Body and Blood of your Son, the holy food and drink of new and unending life in him. Sanctify us also that we may faithfully receive this holy Sacrament, and serve you in unity, constancy, and peace; and at the last day bring us with all your saints into the joy of your eternal kingdom.

All this we ask through your Son Jesus Christ. By him, and with him, and in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honor and glory is yours, Almighty Father, now and for ever. AMEN.

And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to say,

The Lord’s Prayer

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

+ THIS IS OUR STORY +

In Christianity’s earliest days, every community had its own bishop. The bishop, assisted by presbyters (priests) and deacons, presided at Eucharist. At each Easter Vigil, the bishop would baptize, anoint with oil in the sign of the cross, and lay his hands upon the white-robed catechumens who had undergone a year of instruction preceding this event. As Christian communities multiplied in number, a bishop became responsible for several communities. Because a bishop could not be present at each baptismal celebration, priests assumed the responsibility for baptism. Subsequently, the bishop would anoint and lay his hands upon the baptized to “confirm” the baptism performed by the priest. In this paradigm, a bishop’s confirmation of a priest’s baptism had nothing to do with a reaffirmation of personal commitment. As the Church evolved, the perception of confirmation changed radically. Today, confirmation is perceived as an individual’s affirmation of their faith, and an individual’s baptism by any person is sufficient. In early times, catechumens were asked to leave before Eucharist was celebrated. Our current canons do not require a person to be confirmed to receive Eucharist. However in 2012 our national church rejected a resolution removing the requirement for baptism.

If you have a liturgical question or an inquiry about anything that transpires during or around our worship service, please forward the question you would like researched to: [email protected], or drop the question in the
