The Mixed-Mode PathwaySt Augustine’s offers a ‘mixed-mode’ or ‘context-based’ pathway for Ordination, alongside our part and full-time programmes. Mixed-mode is another way of training full-time. The distinctive character of mixed-mode is that students commit three days each week to placement work in a parish. This is why ‘mixed-mode’ is also known as ‘context-based’ training. The parish context itself is chosen in consultation with the student and their diocese, as well as with the incumbent.

A Week in the Life of... What does mixed-mode training involve? In addition to spending three days a week in parochial ministry, mixed-mode students undertake a full academic load, with classroom and study time. Typically, students attend classes every Friday (although evening class options are available). With six residential weekends each year, plus a residential week near Easter, mixed-mode students can rely on at least two days a week to study for their classes and to complete assignments. Outside class time, some mixed-mode students work mostly at home, others use our library and study facilities at West Malling and Southwark.

As a mixed-mode student, your parish involvement is set out in a learning contract between student, College and incumbent. This contract establishes the balance of placement and academic requirements and ensures that all parties understand that the student’s parochial work is in the service of ministerial formation and training. The expectations are educationally driven, therefore, and not the same as those of part-time lay employment or a curacy. At least once each term, mixed-mode students will meet for a special seminar to reflect on the theological, spiritual and pastoral questions inspired by their experience. The incumbent supervising the parish context also provides regular supervisory meetings.

What will I study?Ordinands study for a qualification in Theology, Mission, and Ministry, accredited by the University of Durham as part of the Church of England’s Common Awards. The particular qualification awarded depends on the length of your programme and whether you have recently undertaken accredited study in Theology or a related subject.

• Graduate Diploma (GDip) in Theology, Ministry and Mission

• MA in Theology, Ministry, and Mission

Where will I study? Our Friday teaching is delivered at Malling Abbey, in mid-Kent, where we also have our administrative offices. We also have a centre in Southwark at Trinity House, the Southwark Diocesan Office, just off Borough High Street, very close to Borough tube station and a short walk to London Bridge station. Our Southwark library is open six days a week. Students are also welcome to use the St Augustine’s offices for study, Tuesday to Friday.

“I have found studying at St Augustine’s College to be horizon expanding, enriching to my faith and

deepening my understanding of mission and theology for normal people!

Meeting with like-minded, yet totally different people has been a great joy and

has given me insights into the depth of God's love and creative power in salvation.”

Gordon MacBean

“Whatever your church tradition, St Augustine’s College of Theology will help you gain a deeper understanding of what it means to be the Church of Jesus Christ; stimulating discussion, thought provoking teaching, relevant study materials and practice in different worship styles, all in a very supportive theologically reflective learning environment.”Carol Bates
