July 15th 2016 St Augustine’s News A Message From Mrs Pierce We have had another busy week at St Augustine‛s this week. Every child had the opportunity to visit the Queen‛s residence at Sandringham which was a wonderful finale to our summer term‛s learning, Year 5 visited Stanground Academy for “Big Learning Day”, we have invited parents to see our “Showcase of the Year”, hosted an online safety parents‛ meeting AND we managed to squeeze in Sports Day!! I hope that you have all now received and read your child‛s end of year report. Please speak to your child‛s teacher if you have any questions about any aspect of these. KS2 SATs RESULTS Like the vast majority of schools across the country, we have received disappointing SATs results this year. I‛m sure you‛ll be aware that over the past few years there have been many changes to education and what happens in schools and there has been huge changes to KS2 tests. The tests have been made harder this year and the way that the changes have been made has been very disruptive. Children were not given the normal amount of time to study for the tests. This could mean that, despite their hard work and talent, some of our children have not reached the standards that they, and we, were expecting in the tests. This is not in any way the fault of either the child or their teacher: rather, it is the outcome of changes to the national curriculum and a resetting of the expected standard. I am confident that our teacher assessments are accurate and reflect the actual attainment and progress of our Y6. SPORTS DAY We had a wonderful Sports Day on Tuesday morning! It was great to see so many parents and friends at school. After a morning of activities and races, St Luke won the House Cup for achieving most points and St Mark won the Spirit Cup for their wonderful support of each other and team spirit. A huge thank you to Mr Hurford and Mrs Brattan for organising this great event and many, many thanks to Mrs Courten and Mrs Loizou for providing the adults with refreshments. BOOTS4FRICA Last week Mrs Tomlinson spoke to the children in collective worship about the charity Boots4frica and asked children to donate trainers and football boots they no longer needed. Boots4frica is a charity set up by a local teenager to provide football boots to the young people in Karamojo, Uganda. The children there often play football in bare feet or with one boot each. We are very pleased with how the children and parents have responded to this and we are already gathering quite a collection of football boots and trainers in school.

Y5 BIG LEARNING DAY - Miss Wilkinson On Wednesday, the Y5s attended an extremely enjoyable day at Stanground Academy when they took part in “Big Learning Day”. Children were given the opportunity to experience life as a secondary school pupil and took part in lots of lessons including science, Brazilian dance, Samba music, computing and drama. It was a wonderful day, filled with lots of entertainment, laughter and great learning. FINAL WEEK‛S EVENTS - PLEASE READ CAREFULLY! 6.15-7.15 for Yrs 5&6. As this will be Y6‛s last DISCO, they will have VIP tickets and will not need to pay, but still need to return permission slips. Disco letters have gone out already so please contact the school office if you haven‛t seen one. As usual, there will be a tuck shop but if you would like your child to buy treats PLEASE make sure that they bring loose change on the night - not £5 notes.

● If your child has a birthday during the summer break, I would be grateful if they could come to school in their own clothes on Thursday, not Friday.

● Some lower school classes have requested an end of term class party. Their teacher will send you information separately to inform you of this.

● On the final day of term, all children are welcome to bring a toy to play with their friends if they wish. NO ELECTRONIC TOYS PLEASE!

Y6 ON MONDAY, we will hold our Y6 “Wet and Wild” treat after school. Year 6 are invited back to school in shorts and T shirts, armed with their water guns 4pm - 5.30pm. Please make sure your child brings a change of clothes for a hot dog tea. ON FRIDAY Our Leavers‛ Service will take place at 9.15am in church. This is a wonderful opportunity for Y6 to share with their friends, parents and teachers their highlights of the last four years and for us to wish them all well as they travel onto the next stage of their school journey. Our Year 6 trophies and awards will also be presented in church. All parents and family are warmly invited to join us. Year 6 have traditionally been allowed to get their shirts signed on the last day. We are happy for this tradition to continue with your permission so please let us know if you DO NOT want your child to collect signatures on their shirts. This will NOT however begin until AFTER our service in church and all children will be expected to wear school uniform on the last day of term.

If you are in any doubt, please contact the office and a statement or update will be made available for you. As a reminder, if any money is owed to the school for any of these activities, then your child will not be allowed to participate in any future paid for activities in school, until the debt is paid off in full.
