Discussion Questions Read Mark 3:7-12 from the Bible Story (page 1-2)

1. How far would you walk to see Jesus? (In the Bible, some people walked over whole 3 days to see Jesus!)

2. Why were people using such a lot of effort to see Jesus? ( Jesus was teaching about the Kingdom of God and he was doing these amazing miracles - like driving out evil and healing people. This was so incredible that it was worth travelling days just to see him.)

4. In Mark’s Gospel, we get to see what a lot of people think about Jesus. Who do the evil spirits say who Jesus is? (They shouted ‘You are the Son of God!’ Even though they are evil, they know exactly who Jesus is.)

Explanation of the Mark Series The Gospel of Mark is an action-packed account of Jesus’ life. In 16 brief chapters, Mark reports the significant claims and actions of Jesus, giving special attention to the events leading up to his death. Mark shows us that Jesus isn’t just one dimensional, but the fulfilment of the greatest hopes for all of humanity. Over 12 weeks, we’ll be exploring who Jesus is and why he matters to us today. This will help us to answer: Who do you say that I am?

B. Look at photos of a person.

C. Spend time with the person, doing activities together.

(C - The disciples got to know about Jesus by spending time with him. They listened to what Jesus taught, saw how we healed many people, and saw how we loved all people.)

9. Who do you think Jesus wants on his team today? ( Jesus wants us! Just like the disciples, we can spend time with Jesus through reading the Bible and prayer. He gives us authority to make disciples in his name.)

Prayer Dear Lord Jesus, thank you that you have the power to heal anyone. We pray today for anyone who is sick or in hospital - please heal them. We thank you that we can also look forward to a day when everyone will be perfectly healed. Jesus, we thank you that you use ordinary people as part of your mission in the world. Please help us to love spending time with you, learning from you, that we would be ready to tell many about who you are. In Jesus’ name we pray, Amen.

Discussion Questions Read Mark 3:7-12 from the Bible Story (page 1-3)

1. If Jesus was in Toowoomba today, why do you think people would want to see him?

2. What were the reasons people were going to Jesus? ( Jesus was teaching, he was driving out evil, and healing people. People were travelling a long way to see him.)

3. How long do you think it would take to walk from Jerusalem to Galilee? (It was a long way - 165km, which would take you three big days of walking.)

4. In Mark’s Gospel, we get to see what a lot of people think about Jesus. Who do the evil spirits say who Jesus is? (To Jesus the evil spirits were shouting ‘You are the Son of God!’ Even though they are evil, they know exactly who Jesus is.)

5. Why did Jesus want the evil spirits to stop talking about him? (Lots of people are not happy with Jesus. He is forgiving sins - which only God can do. He is healing people on the Sabbath. The teachers of the law are trying to trap him. Jesus still has work to do, so he doesn’t want to get arrested yet, until it is the proper time.)

Read Mark 3:13-19 from the Bible Story (page 3-5)

6. How would you describe the 12 disciples to a friend? (Note that the 12 disciples aren’t picked because they are super smart, are wealthy, are athletic - but in fact they are all very different! Some are fishermen, one is a tax collector, they are uneducated, ordinary men.)

7. What jobs did Jesus give the disciples to do? (The disciples were given the authority to do the same things Jesus was doing - teaching, driving out evil. We see later too that the disciples can heal.)

8. Why do you think Jesus pulled together a team and didn’t just stay solo? ( Jesus could only be in one place at one time. He also knew that there was going to be a time when he wasn’t going to be around. Jesus is the only way to God. He didn’t come to earth to give us a rulebook, but so that we can know him personally. The twelve disciples spend lots of time with Jesus - walking, sleeping, eating, teaching and healing with Jesus. This was preparing them for a time Jesus wasn’t going to be there.)

9. Who do you think Jesus uses today on his team? ( Jesus uses us! God loves to use his people to share about his big rescue plan, and to invite people to join it. Just as Jesus sends out the disciples with Jesus’ authority, today we are also sent out to tell people about Jesus!)

10. How does being on Jesus’ team change how you think and act each day? (Being a disciple of Jesus means we look out for people who we can love and pray for, be ready to forgive, and ready to point them to Jesus.)
