MUSINGS FROM THE DEACON CAVE

We ask St. Bernard Parish to pray for family and friends of Brother of Dick (Norma) Jirschele

“Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them. May their soul and the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God,

rest in peace.”

SACRAMENT OF CONFIRMATION

Where is Theodor Geisel When You Need Him? Dr. Suess books were a staple in my childhood library. Cat in the Hat, Green Eggs and Ham, Go, Dog, Go! and so many more! But more than just being whimsical children books, some of the stories conveyed great lessons. The story that keeps coming to my mind lately is the The Sneetches. The core of the story is that there were star-bellied Sneetches and Sneetches that did not have stars on their bellies. The star-bellied Sneetches thought they were above the plain-bellied Sneetches and treated them as inferior at every opportunity.

Enter Sylvester McMonkey McBean who had a machine that would put stars on the bellies that didn’t have one for a sum of $3. All of the plain-bellied Sneetches went through the machine so that all the Sneetches had stars on their bellies. Conveniently, Mr. McMonkey McBean had a machine to remove stars from the bellies of the original star-bellied Sneetches for $10. As the story unfolds, all of the Sneetches keep going through both machines until they run out of money. The result is that no one could tell who was an original star-bellied Sneetch and who wasn’t and they learned that in the end, it didn’t matter at all. The link to the YouTube video of the story is https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PdLPe7XjdKc if you have ten minutes free, I encourage you to watch.

There are two reasons this comes to mind today. The second reading from Paul to the Romans talks about how in the eyes of God, there is no difference between Jews and Gentiles, we are all in need of God’s mercy. The other thing that comes to mind is our current circumstances and the conversations around facemasks. From we must wear one or everyone is going to die, to the virus is a hoax and everything in between, there are few people that have not formulated their own thoughts on the subject. Believe it or not, there are actually people that change their minds as new information becomes available! No matter where you are at on the continuum, please do not forget in the end, we are all human beings in need of God’s grace. In the end, that is what is important.

Time to go to the marshmallow roast!

Deacon Mike

FORMED

It’s hard to believe that we are already in Mid-August and it’s been a bit since a children’s program was highlighted. I stumbled across a video series for children called The Opus Joyous Show, Season 1. The characters are fun and reminds me a little bit of the Muppets. They are adventure stories like you’ve never seen before. Captain Barnacle has a plan for total darkness in the world. Through the use of original music, puppets, 3D animation, and captivating plots The Opus Joyous Show will entertain, educate and inspire both the young and the young at heart. This is a totally Catholic epic adventure story. Lovable St. Mary Kate, the teaching nun is very cute, fun and comforting. Each episode is about 25 minutes long. As school approaches, maybe this is a show, if time allows before the day starts, you could squeeze this in? Submitted weekly by a St. Bernard Parishioner

Next Weekend At Our Parish Father Doug Grandon will be visiting our parish on behalf of Fellowship of Catholic University Students (FOCUS). Fr. Doug is a FOCUS National Chaplain and a priest of the Archdiocese of Denver. He became Catholic in 2003, after serving as a Protestant missionary and pastor for 25 years. In 2008, Pope Benedict granted Fr. Doug permission to be ordained a married Catholic priest. He holds a PhD in Historical Theology. FOCUS is a national organization serving college students on more than 172 campuses across the U.S. and five international locations. Almost 800 FOCUS missionaries on these campuses

invite students into a relationship with Christ and His Church, while equipping them for a lifetime of Catholic evangelization. Fr. Doug is excited to be with you and share the hope of the New Evangelization! To learn more, please visit www.focus.org.
