Fr. Brian Bell, Pastor Faith Formation News Page 3

There will be no Elementary Faith Formation classes from December 17th until January 10th!

Classes resume on January 14th. The catechists and I wish all of our Faith Formation families a Blessed Christmas and a very Happy New Year!

Classes for the 2018-19 Faith Formation year began the second week of September. Registration is ongoing for the year for Kindergarten, First and Fourth/Fifth Grades. Sacrament classes were closed on October 1st. Catholic School students wishing to receive their sacraments at St. Bernard’s will need to register for the second semester in January.

First Reconciliation in this diocese is made in the second grade and Confirmation and First Eucharist in third grade. If you have an older child, who has missed the sacraments, for whatever reason, at the younger ages or is in need of baptism, please know that we have programs available to take care of their needs for the 2019/2020 year.

For more information on the program, please contact me at [email protected] or call me at the Parish Office 480-661-9843 ex 309

God’s Blessings, Kathie

Dear Parishioners:

"After three days they found him in the temple, sitting in the midst of the teachers, listening to them and asking them questions, and all who heard him were astounded at his understanding and his answers."

As we celebrate the feast of the Holy Family, this Gospel exposes us to a strange tension. While this family is one we can look to for an example, they are not quite the same family unit as everyone else. There is an otherness to Jesus, something profound. And yet, perhaps on second thought, are our families so different?

When Mary and Joseph encountered Jesus in the temple, "they were astonished." But at what? Mary's response is surprised. They're not astonished that Jesus is preaching in a place for respected teachers. They're not astonished that their son has captured the attention of the wisest men of the time period. They're astonished at his seemingly disobedient behavior! "Son, why have you done this to us? Your father and I have been looking for you with great anxiety."

All our children have an "otherness" about them, something that makes them unique and different. They are distinctly not "me." What will our own children become? What temple will they wander off to? Who will they astound?

Yours in Christ

Father Brian Bell

CARMELITE INFORMATION NIGHT

The Lay Carmelite Community of St. Therese’s Little Way at Christ the King Church in Mesa cordially invites you to come and explore the “Carmelite Way of Life” at our annual Information Night on January 8, 2019.

Share a brief and casual evening with some of our members and learn the “who, what and why” of Lay Carmelites including our history, our place and service in the Church and how we change lives.

Learn first-hand from members of our Community how we strive to live a life in the presence of God while living out our state in life as single and married lay people with jobs, families and day to day life responsibilities.

If you have a desire to grow closer to Jesus by enhancing or developing a meaningful prayer life while increasing your devotion to Mary, our Blessed Mother, then a Lay Carmelite way of life could be what God is calling you to.

Please join us on January 8th from 7:00pm to 8:pm Christ the King Church, St. Francis Room

1551 E Dana Ave, Mesa. If you cannot join us for this meeting but are interested in learning more, please call:

Collection for Funds & Toiletries –

December 29 & 30, 2018 The second collection at all Masses the 5th weekend of the month

Next weekend...December 29 & 30, 2018... will support the

efforts of the SVdP Conference here at St. Bernard’s. The

money you give supports people primarily living in our parish

boundaries who are struggling to pay rent, buy groceries and gas,

and pay for utility bills.

Also, on the last weekend there will be receptacles in the Church

for the collection of personal-sized toiletry items for the

homeless. The SVdP facilities in Phoenix, which provide showers

and barber services, are in constant shortage of such

items. Needed personal or travel-sized items include: soap,

shaving cream, disposable razors, shampoo, deodorant,

toothpaste, and toothbrushes.

We appreciate all your support for the works of the SVdP

Conference here at St. Bernard’s. Your contributions help us help

others. Vincentians of St. Bernard of Clairvaux

Will resume on January 9, 2019 This year’s study

“THE BIBLE and the SACRAMENTS” DVD with Matthew Leonard

The primary focus of The Blessed Mother’s Spirituality Group is to enhance our awareness of the Holy Spirit in our daily lives. We invite the Holy Spirit into our hearts and the meetings to guide us on a path to help ourselves and each other develop personal and enlightened relationships with God. We, as Christians, are on a journey from “Blessings to Blessings”; we come from God and are called to journey back to Him. As the Catechism tells us “The desire for God is…written in the human heart…” Man finds his ultimate truth and happiness only in God. Happiness is the purpose of our journey of faith.

As we study we are guided by the Blessed Mother to share our most intimate needs for prayer for ourselves, family and friends. In our sessions we counsel and comfort those in need along with praying the Memorare.

Each meeting is concluded with the Prayer to Saint Michael the archangel to defend us in our battles.

Everyone is welcome to join us.

We meet on Wednesday mornings 9:30 AM - 11:30 AM in the new parish center 2nd floor Rooms 202 & 203.

There is a new Website for Safe Environment. You can still access the old site safeenvironmenttraining.org and it will take you to the new site phoenix.setanet.org it is not compatible with Internet Explorer; you must use Chrome, Firefox or Safari to view the videos. If you have received an email that says you need to renew just follow the link and renew your training online. Everyone who serves in ministry will need to be compliant with their training by December 31st. If you are new to ministry and not taken the foundation class, “Keeping the Promise Alive” you need to go to the website phoenix.setanet.org and click on “register for classes” and find the class called “Keeping the Promise Alive” at another parish and register and attend that class. You can download the paperwork and complete and return to me, after you have attended the class. Your training is not complete until I have the paperwork on file. If you have any questions concerning Safe Environment Training please call Kathie at the Parish Office 480-661-9843 ex 309. I am the Safe Environment Coordinator at St. Bernard’s.
