Elementary Faith Formation News

Safe Environment News

All Volunteers in any Parish Ministry please note:

It is time once again to begin renewal for Safe Environment for all of our volunteers. Renewal will be available online beginning July 1st. There are many changes to the safe environment process in the Diocese of Phoenix this year. There are fliers in the Church foyer and the Parish Office with an explanation of how to access the new website.

I will be out of the Office most of this week, so after trying to set up your account with Catholic Mutual, if you have any problems or questions please feel free to contact me any time after July 21st. My contact information is on the flier. For those who do not have computers I will be happy to help you set up an account through a parish computer. Please have patience with all the changes, as I have been in training for a few months on all of this, unfortunately, it is rolling out during my vacation time.

Together, over the next few months, we will complete all the necessary steps to help keep St. Bernard’s a safe environ-ment for all!

Kathie Stine Safe Environment Coordinator

ST. KATERI TEKAKWITHA

On July 14th, we celebrate the feast of the "Lily of the Mohawks." St. Kateri Tekakwitha is the first Native American woman to be canonized. Orphaned by a smallpox outbreak, Kateri survived with severe scarring and impaired eyesight. Despite tragedy, she was a devout girl at a young age, often building crosses from sticks in the woods. When she was 18, she began secret instruction in the Catholic faith with French missionaries. Her commitment to Christianity and vow of virginity was misunderstood and ridiculed by her fellow villagers. She escaped to a nearby mission, where she attended daily Mass, taught the children, and cared for the sick and the elderly.

Sometimes the greatest misunderstandings can come from those closest to us. Like St. Kateri, God invites us to be faithful to our commitments of faith and to always respond in love. (Excerpt from LPI)

There will be no Liturgy of the Word at the 9:00 and 11:00am Masses during June and July due to summer vacations. We will resume Liturgy of the Word on Sunday, August 4th.

Registration for the fall semester of Faith Formation classes will begin the week end of August 10th/11th. There will be information on the 2019-2020 year on the website and in the Church and Parish Office by August 1, 2019.

I will be back from vacation this week and will return to the Office Monday morning. I look forward to another wonderful year of faith formation and sacrament preparation with all of our families at St. Bernard’s!

God’s blessings,

Kathie

HOSPITALITY MINISTERS NEEDED

Try it for a few weeks. You will see that you enjoy the interaction.

A special Thank You to the Ladies of the Altar Society, who volunteer their Monday mornings each week to clean the Church and Chapel. We appreciate all the time you have given to make the Church sparkle!

Please keep our Church nice. Our Altar Society volunteers work very hard to keep things looking neat. Your help is appreciated.

We are always looking for help, even if it is just straightening the area in front of you at Mass.

We meet Monday mornings after Mass, and work until about 11 am. Teens needing service hours are welcome.

Science and Ethics

Pope Benedict XVI has stated, “I feel the duty to affirm yet again that not all that is scientifically possible is also ethically licit. Technology, when it reduces the human being to an object of experimentation, results in abandoning the weak subject to the arbitration of the stronger. To blindly entrust oneself to technology as the only guarantee of progress, without offering at the same time an ethical code that penetrates its roots in that same reality under study and development, would be equal to doing violence to human nature with devastating consequences for all. The contribution of scientists is of primary importance. Together with the progress of our capacity to dominate nature, scientists must also contribute to help understand the depth of our responsibility for man and for nature entrusted to him” (February 12, 2007 – Address to the International Congress on Natural Moral Law).
