31st Sunday Ordinary Time ~ Today’s gospel is a simple story involving a man, a tree, love and hate. Ultimately love wins! It always does because it gives - not takes - life! Zacchaeus is placed at the center of this story between love and hate. The towns people did indeed hate him and with good reason. He worked for the enemy, collecting their taxes. He charged them more than he should have. He got rich off of them. He had an army of Romans to back him since he

was working for Rome. Even his physical details gave them opportunity to display their hatred for him. When Zacchaeus tried to move up to the front of the crowd to see Jesus when he passed by, they blocked him and prevented him from doing so. Since he couldn’t see over them, the only thing left was to climb a tree. But just as much as the towns-people hated Zacchaeus, Jesus loved him. He loved him not because he did anything to earn it. He loved him and offered love to him; because he knew he needed it; because he believed in the power of love to help and to save; because he never missed an opportunity to teach others about love. When he arrived at Zacchaeus’ tree he looked up, called for him to come down, and loved him by inviting himself to his home – an act of entering into intimacy and hospitality. It worked immediately. The town displayed more hate, but Zacchaeus countered it with love. He had already been affected. Loved by Jesus – he changed on the spot. He loved Jesus back by publicly giving a sign of repentance (metanoia) and thereby saving face for Jesus. Jesus was being indicted for entering the house of a sinner. But the sinner declared not just a little change, but a total change of heart. His willingness to give a portion of his wealth to the poor (20%) would have been considered generous by any standard. He went way beyond. He publicly declared that he would give half of all his wealth to the poor. And he also promised to pay back those he defrauded 4 times what they lost. This was total conversion! Then in one sweeping statement Jesus restored wholeness and welcomed back Zacchaeus. He placed him on equal ground with everyone else who was there. He revealed the real meaning of community – not rejecting and condemning what is lost but seeking it out and welcoming it home. "Today salvation has come to this house because this man too is a descendant of Abraham.

For the Son of Man has come to seek and to save what was lost." With whom do we wish to be identified: the town and hate, or Jesus and love? Today’s gospel is a simple story involving a man, a tree, love and hate; but the results are miraculous!

Domingo 31 del Tiempo Ordinario ~ El Evangelio de hoy es una historia simple que involucra a un hombre, un árbol, amor y odio. En última instancia, el amor gana! Siempre lo hace porque el amor da la vida; no la quita! Zaqueo se coloca en el centro de esta historia entre el amor y el odio. La gente del pueblo efectivamente, lo odia, y con justa razón. Trabajaba para el enemigo, recogiendo sus impuestos. Les cobraba más de lo que debía. Se enriqueció a costa de ellos. Él tenía a su disposición

un ejército de Romanos para respaldarlo ya que estaba al servicio de Roma. Incluso su aspecto físico les facilitó la oportunidad de mostrar su odio hacia él. Cuando Zaqueo trató de ponerse al frente de la multitud para ver a Jesús cuando pasaba, la gente se lo impidió. Puesto que no podía ver por encima de ellos, lo único que le quedaba hacer era subirse a un árbol. Pero de la misma forma como la gente del pueblo odiaba a Zaqueo, Jesús lo amaba. Lo amaba no porque hubiera hecho algo para ganárselo. Él lo amaba y le ofreció su amor porque sabía que lo necesitaba; porque creía en el poder del amor para ayudar y salvar; porque él nunca perdia la oportunidad para enseñar a otros acerca del amor. Cuando llegó al árbol de Zaqueo alzó la vista, le pide que baje, y le demuestra su amor invitándose a sí mismo a su casa; un acto de entrar en la intimidad y en la hospitalidad. Funcionó de inmediato. El pueblo demostró aún más odio, pero Zaqueo respondió con amor. Ya había sido afectado. Amado por Jesús, cambió en el acto. Correspondió al amor de Jesús al dar públicamente un signo de arrepentimiento (metanoia). Se acusó a Jesús de entrar en la casa de un pecador. Pero el pecador demostró no sólo un pequeño cambio, sino un cambio total de corazón. Su disposición a dar una parte de su riqueza a los pobres (20%) hubiera sido considerada bastante generosa a cualquier punto de vista. Él fue mucho más allá. Declaró públicamente que iba a dar la mitad de todos sus bienes a los pobres. También se comprometió a pagar a los que defraudó cuatro veces más de lo que perdieron. Esta fue una conversión total! De repente, en una declaración radical Jesús restauró a plenitud y le dio la bienvenida a Zaqueo. Lo colocó en pie de igualdad con todos los que estaban presentes. Reveló el verdadero significado de la comunidad - no rechazando ni condenando lo que se había perdido sino buscándolo y dándole la bienvenida. “Hoy ha llegado la salvación a esta casa, porque también él es hijo de Abraham, y el Hijo del

hombre ha venido a buscar y a salvar lo que se había perdido” ¿Con quién deseamos ser identificados: con el pueblo y el odio, o Jesús y el amor? El evangelio de hoy es una historia simple que involucra a un hombre, un árbol, el amor y el odio; pero los resultados son milagrosos!
