THOUGHTS FROM EILEEN LIMBERG, MA

Director for Children Faith Formation

Children Ask The Best Questions

Did you know that there is a ques-tion box on the Information Table in the foyer of the church? If no one is manning the table, people can drop questions in the box and someone from staff will get back to them. Or in this special case, we decided to share the question with everyone

and see what they think the answer is.

Recently, two post-its were dropped in from Abiel and Samyah. Both shared that they loved God, but one added a question we should all be asking: “How important is God?”

I think during this time of the year it is an important ques-tion to be asking. We are celebrating God becoming Man.

Why do we care? I can go into a deep theological disserta-tion. But because a child asked this question, I’ll address the answer to her.

To me, God is important because without God’s love, I wouldn’t exist. I am reminded daily that I am important to God whenever I look at the blessings in my life or the beauty of the world around me. I am reminded daily that I am not alone and that God is there when I struggle or feel sad.

God is more than something far away. God is with me all the time. I know that God loves me because he sent his Son, Jesus, to help me be a better person.

Samyah, God is important because God is in my heart helping me everyday to be a better person. You asked a very good question. I ask everyone else: “Why is God im-portant to you?”

Note: We love seeing questions like this. If you have a question, place it in the box and maybe we will share it with the whole community.

Christmas Flower Offerings Many people each year comment on the beauty of the Church and Chapel environments during the Christmas season. This effort can be realized only through the generous donations of our parishioners. You can honor a loved one, either living or deceased, with a gift to our Christmas Flower Fund. You may use either the envelopes found at the exits of the church, or you may fill out the information below, cut it out, and send it (or bring it) to the office. It is a won-derful way to remember someone special.

Can you see the light?

After losing several large branches during the recent strong weather conditions, the decision was made that for the safety of all, that we take the weight off branches of the trees in front of the church. We will also be removing some of the cement squares that have risen above their level. We are hoping to have this project completed within the next few weeks.

We are disappointed that we could not wait until after the holidays to cut the trees, but as the saying goes, “Safety First.”

Advent Traditions

The Advent Wreath One of the most popular symbols used by Christians to prepare for Christmas is the Advent wreath. The wreath's symbolism of the advent (coming) of Light into the world is clear.

The gradual lighting of the four candles, one on each Sunday of the Advent season, combined with the liturgical colors of the candles (purple is the penitential color used during Advent and Lent; rose is a liturgical color used only on Gaudete Sunday in Advent and Laetare Sunday in Lent) help to symbolize not only our expecta-tion and hope in Our Savior's first coming into the world, but also in his Second Coming as Judge at the end of the world.

The wreath itself is also symbolic. The circle of evergreen in which the candles are placed represents everlasting life. The seedpods, nuts and cones used to decorate the wreath are sym-bolic of resurrection, and fruits represent the nourishing fruitful-ness of the Christian life.

Since Advent is a time to stir up our faith in the Lord, the wreath provides a way for us to enhance this special preparation for Christmas. Moreover, this tradition helps us to remain vigilant in our homes and not lose sight of the true meaning of Christmas.

The Crećhe St. Francis of Assisi is credited with creating the first nativity scene in 1223 at Greccio, Italy in an attempt to place the empha-sis of Christmas upon the worship of Christ rather than upon secular materi-alism and gift-giving. Staged in a cave, St. Fran-cis' nativity scene was a living one with humans and animals cast in the Biblical roles. Such panto-mimes became hugely popular and spread throughout Christendom. Within a hundred years every church in Italy was expected to have a nativity scene at Christmastime. Eventually, statues replaced human and animal participants, and static scenes grew to elaborate affairs with richly robed figurines placed in intricate landscape settings.

The scene is typically composed of figurines depicting the infant Jesus resting in a manger, Mary, and Joseph. Other figures in the scene may include angels, shepherds, and various animals such as

a donkey and an ox. The ox traditionally represents patience, the nation of Israel, and Old Testament sacrificial worship while the donkey represents humility, readiness to serve, and the Gentiles. Tradi-tionally, all figures are added to the crèche except for the infant Jesus; He should be added after midnight on Christmas Eve.

Nativity scenes usually remain on display until the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord on January 12, the official end of the Christmas season.

Mealtime Prayers

During Advent As we prepare for the coming of your Son, O God, we are hungry and thirsty for signs of his love in our lives. We give you thanks for this season of waiting and hope-fulness for Jesus to be even more present in the life of our family. We give you thanks for this food and drink, signs of your gracious love. May this meal strengthen us to love each other and our neighbors as we patiently wait for the coming of your Son. Grant this through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Before Christmas Dinner Leader: Lord Jesus, in the peace of this season our spir-its are joyful: With the beasts and angels, the shepherds and stars, with Mary and Joseph we sing God's praise. By your coming may the hungry be filled with good things, and may our table and home be blessed.

Together: Bless us O Lord, and these Thy gifts, which we are about to receive from Thy bounty through Christ our Lord. Amen.

list is a long one. In the gospels, Jesus saw plenty of injustice in his time and many times righted the wrongs. He is no longer with us physically, but his spirit of justice lives in we who follow him. It is up to us to right what is wrong, regardless of political affiliations. It’s high time to step up to the plate.

THURSDAY, DECEMBER 19 ADVENT

“An angel of the Lord appeared to the woman…” Jgs 13: 2-7, 24-25a

Angels of wondrous messages

In this passage from the book of Judges, an angel of the Lord ap-pears to a woman, who is barren. She conceives and gives birth to Samson. Many years later, the scene repeats itself with Elizabeth who is barren and gives birth to John. Mary, too, is visited by a heavenly messenger, and although she does not know man, and gives birth to Jesus, the Son of God. Strange happenings. Can we believe enough for the impossible to happen in our daily life?

FRIDAY, DECEMBER 20

“…for nothing will be impossible for God.” Lk 1:26-38

A power stronger than us

We re-read this beloved passage from Luke as to how the birth of Jesus came about.

It took enormous trust for Mary to accept the unknown. It was what we might call a “mind boggling” moment. If we only believed that nothing is impossible for God. Our problems may not be solved, or better yet, disappear, but we would have more courage, more strength to face them. Maybe even more insight in dealing with them. Isn’t it worth a try?

SATURDAY, DECEMBER 21 (SAINT PETER CANISUS, PRIEST AND DOCTOR OF THE CHURCH

“The Lord, your God is in your midst, a mighty savior;” Zep 3: 14-18a

He is almost here

A few more days and Advent is coming to a close. We can feel the moment, the yet unseen presence of a Baby, our “mighty savior.” This baby will draw shepherds and kings to his side. The angels will sing, a star unlike any other will shine. In these remaining days, let’s open our hearts to hear these angels and to see this star and even, if for one day, let’s cast aside our problems. He is almost here!

ADVENT REFLECTIONS (By Mary Franceschini)

DECEMBER 15, THIRD SUNDAY OF ADVENT

“Make your hearts firm, because the coming of the Lord is at hand.” Jas 5: 7-10

Those who suffer will rejoice

James offers us consoling words in this passage. Sometimes, our hard-ships and trials seem to never end. It is no easy thing to endure when you feel like giving up. No matter what we do, it seems that we never get it right and, when we do, something else goes wrong! Endure? This is when our faith comes into play. Just as Jesus consoled and healed the people of his time, so will he do for us. This Advent, let’s look ahead with faith and trust. The coming of the Lord is at hand!

MONDAY, DECEMBER 16 “I see him, though not now; I behold him, though not near.” Nm 24: 2-7, 15-17a

To believe in the unseen

In his oracle, Balaam sees what many do not, much like the prophets we are familiar with. Advent is a time of waiting, of anticipation. We wait, in anticipation, like children do before Christmas morning arrives. Will the gift be what I want or maybe better? We must re-capture that moment that somehow, we lost along the way. We must recapture Jesus. “To see him though not now. To “behold him, though not near.”

TUESDAY, DECEMBER 17

“The book of the genealogy of Jesus Christ…” Mt 1:1-17

A not so perfect family history

Does anyone come from a family tree that is perfect? Do we scratch our heads at how some unions came about or, worse yet, discover something that makes us cringe? Look at the genealogy of Jesus. Tamar, Rahab, Ruth, Bathsheba bore sons in strange, unexpected ways, and so did Mary, the mother of Jesus. Yet, these women brought us the Messiah, the King of Kings. Advent opens us to all possibilities, even the strange and unexpected!

WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 18

“This is the name they give him: “The Lord our justice.” Jer 23: 5-8

Justice shall reign

Who doesn’t yearn for justice? Justice for the oppressed, justice for those wrongly accused or justice in that no one is above the law? The

EVENTS Come and celebrate “The Spirit of Simbang Gabi” with us! A Filipino tradition celebrating the 9 days before Christmas. Also known as “Misa de Aguinaldo” (meaning the “Mass for the coming of the Gift”), starting from December 15th to 23rd at 7:30pm.

During this 9-day cele-bration in preparation for Jesus’ coming, the church will be adorned with festive Filipino Christmas lantern and ornaments. Joyful Christmas carols, both in Tagalog and Eng-lish, will be sung dur-ing the Mass as we highly anticipate the birth of Jesus Christ. After each Mass, everyone is invited to join us in a sim-ple get-together and partake of Filipino native treats or kakanin as we fondly say in Tagalog. These include, but not limited to, treats such as puto bumbong, bibingka and hot chocolate.

We come to Simbang Gabi as a way of giving thanks for all the blessings we have received and as a venue to gather with our family & friends. We are excited that this tradition is now in St. Bona-venture (thanks to Fr. Mat) and we hope that you can come and join us. EVERYONE is Welcome! Together, let us celebrate the coming of Jesus, the ultimate manifestation of God’s love for us. P.S. We are still looking for volunteers to spon-sor that special food treat for a night. You may either bring the food or give a monetary donation to-wards purchasing the food. If interested, kindly please contact: Arlyn Capinpin at 925-325-2319

New Year’s Day/The Solemnity of Mary,

Mother of God: Wednesday, January 1, 2020

We celebrate the motherhood of Mary as well as the start of a new calendar year. The title “Mother of God” is a western derivation from the Greek Theotokos, which means “God-bearer.” On this day, we are reminded of the role that the Blessed Virgin played in the plan of our salvation. We will have Mass at 10:00am in English and 12:45pm in Spanish in the church.

CHRISTMAS EVE PARKING

ENTRANCE ACCESS: All vehicles are to enter the parish parking lot through the Clayton Road entrance.

The gate at Indiana Drive is for Exit only. Please do not park on Indiana Drive.

EXIT: All vehicles in the southwest (back) lot are to exit through the Indiana Drive gate. All vehicles in the northeast (front) lot are to exit through the Clayton Road exit. Crossing over between lots will congest traffic and create a safety issue.

DISABLED PARKING: We have 14 designated Disabled Parking spaces. We know this is insufficient for heavy attendance Masses. We encourage those who can walk the distance to park accordingly and leave the disabled spaces for those most in need. Your disabled placard must be clearly displayed.

NO PARKING AREAS:

Parking in front of the rectory garage is prohibited.

Striped areas at the ends of rows and red curbs anywhere on the property are no-parking areas. Vehicles parked in these areas may be ticketed and towed. We must observe the City Codes that require emergency vehicle access to the property.

Parking on Farm Bureau property is strictly prohibited. Your vehicle may be towed.

Our neighbors strongly request that we not park on the local streets, since it leaves no parking for their friends or family who might be visiting. We encourage you to honor their needs. Any car parking in such a way that a residential driveway is blocked may be towed.
