SAINTS AND SPECIAL OBSERVANCES

Sunday: Third Sunday of Lent; First Scrutiny

Monday: Annunciation of the Lord

Friday: Abstinence

MID-LENT CHECK-IN

God says to Moses, “This is what you shall tell the Israelites: I AM sent me to you . . . The Lord, the God of your [ancestors], the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, the God of Jacob” (Exodus 3:14, 15). As Jesus would later say, God is not a God of the dead, but of the living, and so we believe that the dead will one day rise. At this midpoint of Lent, we pause to consider how our repentance is leading us to the Resurrection, to our reunion with the great “I AM.” Part of our repent-ance involves working to secure justice for all and helping our neighbor to live in God’s ways. We en-courage each other and nurture each other, like the compassionate gardener of today’s Gospel, who tells the owner of the orchard that he will nurture the tree, fertilize it, and perhaps it will bear fruit.

3rd Sunday of Lent

“He said to the gardener, ‘For three years now I have

come in search of fruit on this fig tree but have found

none.’” (Luke 13:7)

We can all be like the barren fig tree at times.

Do you cling to what you have or do you generously

share with others? How will you respond when God

asks you what you have done with all the gifts He has

given you? Remember, not only are we called to be

generous, we are called to develop and nurture our gifts

and return with increase.

It’s the most familiar prayer in Christianity, but do you really know what it means? Come learn about The

Lord’s Prayer at RCIA this Monday March 25 from 7-8:30PM in the Hope Meeting Room. All parishioners are invited. No sign-up is needed. WELCOME!

Unlock the Stations of the Cross, Examen-

Style by Gary Jansen [Adapted]

The Stations of the Cross is an age-old devotion that forces us to slow down and pay attention to a very particular and tumultuous time in Jesus’ life. The Stations say: “Wait! Pay particular attention to these moments in Jesus’ life!” Each Station of the Cross has its own tale to tell with les-sons to be learned. For instance, consider the Station when Veronica wipes the face of Jesus. It’s a visually dramatic moment, but also one that demonstrates how acting com-passionately, as Veronica does toward Jesus, leaves us with the face of Christ before us. It’s a story and scene that asks us if we’ve been compassionate in our lives. Have we seen the face of Jesus in our actions toward others? Get to know Jesus more deeply by focusing on the many trials he experienced at the end of his life by applying a variation of the Examen—a reflective devotional exercise described in St. Ignatius’s Spiritual Exercises—to the Sta-tions of the Cross. Focusing on just one Station a day, Monday through Friday, adds up to a 3-week exercise, and can help not only to decompress but to engage in a rela-tionship with Jesus in new ways. Set an alarm on your phone as a reminder if you need to! You can approach this reflection at any time in your day, before or after work or dropping off the kids, wherever you are in your life’s journey. Here are five simple steps, de-rived from the Examen, to help you unlock the Stations of the Cross in a practical, contemplative, and reflective way. Step 1: Chose a Station. Let’s say you’re focusing on Je-sus taking up his Cross. You can read a passage from the Bible that correlates to that scene or simply picture an im-age in your mind. Then take a few deep breaths and ask God to help you quiet your head and open your heart. Of-ten we only try to focus on getting rid of all the mental chatter inside of us, but it’s also important to place our at-tention on the waves of emotions and feelings inside us. Something in you might resist focusing—you may feel tired, nervous, or angry, but that’s okay. Allow yourself to find a level of openness that is true to you. Step 2: Remind yourself that God is all around you. He’s inside you and outside you and his heart beats in yours. Try to feel that reality as best as you can. Then take the picture of Jesus carrying his Cross, and imagine placing the image inside you. Let it take root in you. Step 3: Ask the Holy Spirit to rise up inside you and give you the wisdom to acknowledge God in your life. Ask the Spirit to help you meditate on the scene inside you. How do you think Jesus felt when this was happening? What was he thinking? What is your cross to bear? How heavy is it? How does it affect your relationship with God? Step 4: Review your day. Where did your cross feel the heaviest today? Where did you encounter the cross on the shoulders of others at work, on the news, or in the streets? Where is God in these encounters? Ask God to make you more aware and compassionate of others and yourself. Step 5: Give thanks to God for the opportunity to know Jesus better, and ask God to help you to become more aware of the crosses that everyone carries in life.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Hollywood has given us an image of Moses slipping off his shoes before a burning bush. God has just called Moses by name, and so that Moses doesn’t miss the meaning of this breakthrough in human history, God requires that all barriers to the experience be eliminated. If you’ve ever tried to maneu-ver barefoot across hot sand, or pick your way along a rocky beach, you know how sensitive feet can be. Within the Church, there are religious orders with a custom of going barefoot, not merely to show poverty, but to be an out-ward sign of a desire for connection with creation, a desire to go through life alert to what God is doing. In early days, when reconciliation was a once‑in‑a‑lifetime possibility, penitents often went barefoot for a long period of time as a sign of their conversion. Even today, people follow an ancient practice of slipping off their shoes to walk in the procession to the cross on Good Friday. It is striking that the first use of our new-ly‑scrubbed feet from Holy Thursday night is to walk reso-lutely in the footsteps of Christ to the cross. —James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

Countdown to First Communion Parents, please make sure your First Communion candidate is prepared for a final prayer check on March 24. Our traditional prayers are a time-honored part of our Catholic heritage and knowledge of the basics is a requirement for the sacrament of First Communion. If your child missed the Lenten penance service on March 13, please make arrangements with Fr. Martino as soon as possible. The Catechism of the Catholic Church states that “children must go to the sacrament of Penance before receiving Holy Communion for the first time (1457).” Communion dresses available There are two white communion dresses available to borrow for anyone who needs them. Please see the DRE for details. Can you donate a boy’s suit? If you can donate or lend a boy’s dark suit, suitable for First Commun-ion, please see the DRE. Second retreat mandatory for First Communion In order for your child to receive First First Holy Communion on May 5, 2019, he or she must attend a second sacramental retreat on April 13. This is a family event and both parents are required to be present with their child. Childcare will be provided for siblings. If you are unable to attend or need a makeup packet from the first retreat, please contact Linda Santos at 619.764.2617. Stations of the Cross required for Confirmation Attendance at a minimum of one Stations of the Cross is required for Confirmation. If your child is a candidate for Confirmation in December, this coming Lent will be the only opportunity to fulfill this requirement in time. For more information about Faith Formation, contact Celeste at 912.754.1432 or [email protected].

The Catechism invites Catholics to abstain from meat during the

Fridays in Lent. Preparing meatless meals is a great Lenten ac-

tivity for families, offering an experience of global solidarity

without ever needing to leave the kitchen! In addition to meatless Fridays,

Catholics are also invited to offer daily sacrifices. By giving up little

things—coffee, candies and more—we make room for God to act in our

lives in new ways, and have the opportunity to give the money we save to

those most in need. Pick up a Rice Bowl today, located in the lobby.
