“What will the owner do” In this weeks readings, Jesus continues his teaching in par-ables directed to the chief priest and elders. These leaders, as well as Matthew’s first century audience, would be well steeped in Judaism, know its traditions, imagery, and prophe-cies. While the owner gives responsibility for care of the vine-yard to his tenants, understood as the leaders of Israel; the servants sent by the owner are the prophets, harshly treated and even killed. The prophecy of Jeremiah can be heard in the background: “keep on sending all my servants the proph-ets to you. Yet they have not listened to me… they have stiff-ened their necks and done worse than their ancestors” Jeremiah 7:25-26. The landowner still does not give up, but sends his son. Now the interpretation moves from the past to the present. The Son, of course, is Jesus himself. The treatment of the son seems desperate and illogical. What could the tenants hope to gain? With such a shocking conclusion to the parable, Jesus puts the question that demands an answer: “What will the owner do? The answer from the priests and elders points to their own guilt and the consequences in rejecting the son. In a way that would jolt his audience, Jesus abruptly asks them another question, intimating that they have not read the scriptures. In citing Psalm 118, Jesus connects the rejected stone and the murdered son. However, rejecting the stone and killing the son, is not the end of the story, for the son will become a cornerstone. Because of their action, leadership will be taken away from those who rejecting Jesus and given to others. Immediately following Jesus’ words, Matthew states that the chief priests and Pharisees knew he was speaking about them. They tired to arrest him but feared the crowds, who regarding Jesus as a prophets.

The Respect Life Program sponsored by the United States Conference of Catholic

Bishops, started in 1972 and begins anew each October, the month set aside by the

U.S. bishops as “Respect Life Month.” The

program promotes respect for human life in light of our intrinsic dignity as having

been created in God’s image and likeness and called to an-eternal destiny with him.

Adult Faith Formation Our Adult Faith Formation classes will resume this month on

Tuesday, October 24th, at 7pm at St. Boniface hall. Come and learn about the history and content of the Nicene Creed, which we say every Sunday. The Creed summarizes the dogmas we believe in and is a symbol of our Christian faith. We will go in depth about key phrases used in the

Creed. The Creed also provides a basis for a deeper spiritual life and personal relationship with Christ. Dennis Rose from

St. Mary’s will lead the discussion.

The Knights of Columbus will meet this Wednesday, Oct. 11th — 7 pm

He came to the United States at age 24; and he still perceived a call to priesthood and entered Mount Angel Seminary in 2000. He is currently serving as Pastor at Immaculate Con-ception parish. MEN’S FRATERNITY BEGINS AGAIN! All men in the Santiam Canyon are invited to join us Tuesday, October 24th, 6:00-7:15 AM at Foothills Church, 975 Fern Ridge Rd, Stayton, as we begin Men’s Fraternity, 33 The Se-ries. This non-denominational study will be a 7 week program every Tuesday, ending December 5th. There is no cost, and we offer a free warm breakfast. Workbooks are $15.
