MY FAITH

Sacraments of

Healing

Jesus shares his life

with us through the

Sacraments. There

are two Sacraments

of Healing—Anointing

of the Sick and Rec-

onciliation. When a

person is in danger of

death or facing sur-

gery, the priest

anoints that person

with the Oil of the

Sick. Often the person

receives the Eucharist

at the same time,

sometimes their last

time on earth. In the

Sacrament of Recon-

ciliation, a person

goes to the priest and

confesses their sins.

First we examine our

conscience, then we

are sorry for our sins,

then we confess our

sins. The priest says

the words of absolu-

tion, reassuring us

that Jesus has forgiv-

en all our sins. God is

able to completely

forget the wrong

things that we have

done and help us

begin our new life.

SAINTS THIS WEEK (adapted from Companion to the Calendar

by Mary Ellen Hynes)

February 2—Candlemas:

The Presentation of the Lord

While Americans are celebrating

Ground Hog Day, Christians all over

the world are celebrating that Jesus

was born 40 days ago! On this day

Jesus was brought to the Temple

for a blessing. Simeon called this

baby “a light to the nations.” Tradi-

tionally enough candles are

blessed to last the whole year.

February 6—St. Paul Miki

and companions

This Japanese martyr who died in

1597 was a Jesuit priest. St. Fran-

cis Xavier had brought the Christian

faith to Japan 50 years earlier, but

in 1588 the emperor ordered all

Christians to leave. Paul stayed

with 25 other Christians. They were

killed. But many in the Nagasaki

area continued to follow the Chris-

tian faith secretly.

New Testament

THE WEDDING AT CANA

John 2: 1-11

John is the only evangelist who tells

the story of this first miracle. It is a

beautiful illustration of the love and

trust between Jesus and his Moth-

er. As soon as she knew that the

people had run out of wine, she

told Jesus about the problem. She

simply said, “They have no more

wine.” John’s Gospel is all about

signs that the kingdom of heaven

has come to earth. Jesus asked

Mary, “How does this concern me?

My hour has not yet come.” She

simply turned to the servants and

said, “Do whatever he tells you.”

Like Mary, we can tell Jesus our

problems knowing that he will do

what we need, especially if we “do

whatever he tells [us].” What a sur-

prise when the wine was the best

that anyone had ever tasted! Only

the servants who had drawn the

water knew that water had been

turned into wine.

COMMITTEE We are the body of Christ.

Each & everyone of us is here on this earth for a reason. It does not matter what our age

or race or financial status. God has a special place & job for each & every person that He has created. That person that God creates begins in the womb & does not end

until our natural death.

PARISHIONER

REGISTRATION

&

ONLINE GIVING

Every person’s finances

and family situation is dif-

ferent. Jesus makes it clear

that it matters not how

much one gives, but that it

is planned, calculated,

at least somewhat sacrifi-

cial (see Luke 24:1-4),

and not simply from what

is “leftover” at the end of

the month. We propose the

tithe (10%) as the ideal

every family can consider

working towards. This

means taking steps to give

5% to one’s parish, and 5%

to other charities or causes

you have personal passion

for. You can register online

at www.saintbrendan.org

and click on the link

“Online Registration/New

Parishioner” on lower left

corner of website and to

give online, click on the

“Online Giving” link. It’s

quick, secure, convenient,

and easy. Your support

helps sustain our parish. If

you need help with online

giving, please call the Par-

ish Office at 425-483-

9400.

PRESENTATION OF THE LORD When Mary and Joseph brought Jesus to the Temple, they offered a sacrificial

gift “in accord with the dictate in the law of the Lord.” An offering of a specific

size or kind is not “dictated” when we bring our gifts to the altar at Mass. Is

my gift reflective of the many blessings I have received?

CALLED TO SERVE AS CHRIST CAMPAIGN Thank you to all of you who have answered the call

to participate in the Called to Serve as Christ cam-

paign. Because of your support, the campaign has

already raised over $51.5 million for our priests, sisters and parishes through-

out western Washington. We have helped build momentum as the campaign

moves on to Wave 2020. Throughout 2020, the remaining 40% of the Archdi-

oceses of Seattle’s parishes will conduct the campaign. Archbishop Etienne

invited all of our parishioners to be a part of this historic effort, and we are

thankful for your sacrificial support. Here at St. Brendan Parish, we raised

$916,800 for the campaign. This comes from the generosity of 433 families,

which means 28.4% of our households participated in the campaign. Addi-

tionally, we’d like to thank our hard-working volunteer team, which made this

success possible! They were Called to Serve as Christ, and they answered the

call. Again, thank you to all of you who supported the campaign! If you would

like more information or to donate online, please visit the campaign website

at www.calledtoserveaschrist.org.

FACILITY SCHEDULING We are blessed here at St. Brendan with a large and active parish. If you

would like to use any part of the St. Brendan campus for activities outside of

Mass or adoration, please schedule with the Parish Office at
