  • My dear people of God and St Bridget Family,

    Happy Easter!

We are now in the second half of the Easter Season that ends with the celebration of the Solemnity of Pentecost (May 31, 2020). Next Sunday, we shall celebrate the Solemnity of the ascension of the Lord to heaven. The ascension brings an end, the initial and physical presence of Jesus in the world. We all experience partings in life and we know that if not well prepared for and handled, parting can be a source of pain. The most difficult and painful parting is the parting at the death of a loved one. In the gospel reading to-day Jesus prepares His disciples for his departure and absence.

The most painful parting in life happens when someone we love and depend on departs in death. This could be a parent especially with young children, a spouse or another person that we love and depend on. If not well planned and prepared for, it can be devastating. Jesus having lived and bond-ed with His disciples had formed ‘family’ bonds with them. He therefore tells them: “I will not leave you orphans, I will come to you.” Those are words of comfort and re-assurance.

Praying and reflecting on this brought to mind the last days and weeks of my late sister Angela who departed this world after several months of being sick. She was leaving behind three young children, the oldest being eleven and the youngest five. I was living with her family at the time and one of the things she said to me over and over again regarding the children is; ‘those are your children’ and ‘take care of the children’. She also said this to my other sibling. In so doing, she prepared us and the children for her absence. I am glad that she did that and that we have done our best to ensure that those three children did not feel “orphaned”.

My dear brothers and sisters, Jesus did not leave His disciples orphaned or desolate because He pre-pared them for His departure and absence. By their faith in Him and their keeping of His command-ments they were able to see Him. We too are His disciples today and we continue to experience and feel His presence in our lives by loving Him and keeping His commandments.

Then Jesus made the promise of the Holy Spirit. However, this promise is premised on LOVE. He said to them: “If you love me, you will keep my commandments”. It is important to note that He not just speaking about the 10 Commandments. He is speaking of “My Commandments”. When you read the gospels, you will find that He indeed had many commandments. He gave many “Do’s” and “Don’t’s”. For example here are a couple of Do’s: Forgive those who sin against you. Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you. And here are some Dont’s: Do not store up for your-selves treasures on earth. Do not let your hearts be troubled. Do not return evil with evil. All these can be summed up in one word; Love. No wonder He said: Love one another as I have loved you!

It is after that premise that He then makes this promise: “And I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Advocate to be with you always, the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot accept, because it neither sees nor knows him. But you know him, be-cause he remains with you, and will be in you”.

My dear brothers and sisters, as we continue to celebrate these last weeks of Easter, let us more than ever avail ourselves to the Lord. Let us love Him more and more as we open ourselves to the gifts of the Holy Spirit. Let us also pray for the young people in our parish who are to receive the Sacrament of Confirmation this year, that during this time of staying home, they may open their hearts and pre-pare for the Holy Spirit’s. Happy Easter and God bless, Fr Simon Peter

  • Do Not Judge, Just Trust.

A doctor entered the hospital in hurry after being called in for an urgent surgery. He answered the call asap, changed his clothes & went directly to the surgery block. He found the boy’s fa-ther pacing in the hall waiting for the doctor. On seeing him, the dad yelled: “Why did you take all this time to come? Don’t you know that my son’s life is in danger? Don’t you have any sense of responsibility?” The doctor smiled & said: “I am sorry, I wasn’t in the hospital & I came as fast as I could after receiving the call…… And now, I wish you’d calm down so that I can do my work” “Calm down?! What if your son was in this room right now, would you calm down? If your own son dies now what will you do??” said the father angrily The doctor smiled again & replied: “I will say what Job said in the Holy Book “From dust we came & to dust we return, blessed be the name of God”. Doctors cannot prolong lives. Go & intercede for your son, we will do our best by God’s grace” “Giving advises when we’re not concerned is so easy” Murmured the father. The surgery took some hours after which the doctor went out happy, “Thank goodness!, your son is saved!” And without waiting for the father’s reply he carried on his way running. “If you have any ques-tions, ask the nurse!!” “Why is he so arrogant? He couldn’t wait some minutes so that I ask about my son’s state” Commented the father when seeing the nurse minutes after the doctor left. The nurse answered, tears coming down her face: “His son died yesterday in a road accident, he was at the burial when we called him for your son’s surgery. And now that he saved your son’s life, he left running to finish his son’s burial.” Moral: Never judge anyone….. because you never know how their life is & what they’re going through”

Reconciliation (Confession) is held every Saturday from 4:30 to 6:00 pm

  • Catholic Social Teaching: Global Solidarity We are one human family whatever our national, ra-cial, ethnic, economic, and ideological differences. Our love for all our sisters and brothers demands that we promote peace in a world surrounded by violence and conflict. If one is aware of world problems, one can feel over-whelmed and discouraged. Justice for the poor, peace between nations, food for all the hungry, housing for the homeless, equal rights for all men and women, an end to human trafficking, basic income equality, hu-man rights for the oppressed, and an end to war and violence, can all seem to be impossible. The first reading talks of joy and healing. Catholic Social Thought must not fall into the trap of discour-agement and guilt. God is calling us and our world to healing and even joy. Good things can happen with the power of the Spirit. We must not lose hope. The second reading speaks of hope. The healing that God wants for our world can happen. Good can over-come evil. We must not lose hope. The gospel speaks of a relationship of love and soli-darity between the Father and Jesus and then with all of us. This unity and solidarity can be made real, not just in our hearts or not just in an interior feeling, but also in the way people are treated and in the way love is expressed in action for justice and peace. We must not lose hope. We must put our faith into practice. As people of faith we are more aware than ever of countless world problems and examples of injustice. As people of faith we are more aware than ever that we want an end to all the injustice. As people of faith we believe more than ever that with God’s help we can offer something better to our world and its people.

PRAYER OF SPIRITUAL COMMUNION It has long been a Catholic understand-ing and practice that when circumstanc-es prevent one from receiving Holy Communion, it is possible to make an Act of Spiritual Communion, which is a source of grace. Spiritual Communion is an ardent desire to receive Jesus in the Most Holy Sacrament and lovingly em-brace him at a time or in circumstances when one cannot receive Him in sacra-mental Communion. The most common reason for making an Act of Spiritual Communion is when a person cannot attend Mass. Acts of Spiritual Commun-ion increase our desire to receive sacra-mental Communion and help us avoid the sins that would make us unable to receive Holy Communion worthily. (As you follow the Mass on facebook, this is the prayer to pray at the time for Holy

Communion) I believe that you are present in the Most Blessed Sacrament. I love you above all things and I desire to receive you into my soul. Since I cannot now receive You sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart. I em-brace You as if You were already there and unite myself wholly to You. Never permit me to be separated from You. Amen By St Alphonsus Liguori

PRAYER TO OUR LADY OF GUADALUPE

    Patroness of the Americas

Holy Virgin of Guadalupe, Queen of the An-gels and Mother of the Americas. We fly to you today as your beloved children. We ask you to intercede for us with your Son as you did at the wedding in Cana. Pray for us, lov-ing Mother, and gain for our nation and world, and for all our families and loved ones, the protection of your holy angels, that we may be spared the worst of this illness. For those already afflicted, we ask you to obtain the grace of healing and deliverance. Hear the cries of those who are vulnerable and fearful, wipe away their tears and help them to trust. In this time of trial and testing, teach all of us in the Church to love one another and to be patient and kind. Help us to bring the peace of Jesus to our land and to our hearts. We come to you with confidence, knowing that you tru-ly are our compassionate mother, health of the sick and cause of our joy. Shelter us under the mantle of your protection, keep us in the em-brace of your arms, help us always to know the love of your Son, Jesus. Amen.
