St. Catherine Labouré (Zoe) was born 1806 in Fain-Les-Moutiers France, 9th of 11 children. She entered the Sisters of Charity in 1830 and took the name Catherine. In November 1830 Mary appeared to her and asked for a medal to be made (Miraculous Medal). Mary had rays coming from gems on her fingers. Those without rays symbolized graces we forget to ask for. For the next 46 years Catherine led a hidden life, and cared for old men. She died on 12/31, 1876. She was canonized in 1947. Her body is incorrupt to this day.

Dear Brothers and Sisters: Today we begin a new series of catechesis on the Beatitudes in Mat-thew’s Gospel. Jesus’ teaching provides a kind of “identity card” for Christians. Like Moses on Sinai, Jesus gives these “new commandments” from a hillside. He does not impose them but instead pro-poses them as the path to true happiness in the fu-ture that God promises to his faithful people. Each Beatitude is composed of three parts: the opening word “Blessed”, followed by the situation in which those who are called blessed find themselves – poor in spirit, mourning, thirsting for justice – and final-ly the reason for which they are blessed. The Beati-tudes teach that we are blessed not by our present situation, but rather by the new condition that is ours by God’s grace. This first sermon of Jesus thus presents eight “doors” through which we can en-counter the power of God’s love to transform our lives and history. The Beatitudes point us beyond our limitations, tears and failures towards that Pas-chal joy born of Christ’s own victorious passage from death to life. I greet the English-speaking pilgrims and visitors taking part in today’s Audience, especially the groups from the United States of America. Upon all of you and your families, I invoke the joy and peace of our Lord Jesus Christ. May God bless you!

The Gabriel Project Cluster of Montgomery County assists needy women and women in crisis pregnancies in Mont-gomery County. Women volunteers (especially bilingual Spanish speaking women) are needed to stay in touch with client mothers. This includes keeping in touch with them via phone or email during their pregnancy, bringing them needed items such as diapers, baby clothes, etc. that are provided by the Gabriel Project, and praying for them. The average time commitment would be approximately 1 - 4 hours per month (or less). Men are also needed to pick up donations once or twice per month. Event Assistants are also needed for approximately 1 – 2 hours per month. Daily prayer supporters are also needed. Donations of diapers and formula are also appreciated. El rito de iniciación cristiana de adultos y jóvenes RICA (Catecumenado) es un proceso de instrucción en la Fe Católica para los que están tratando de encontrar el significado de Dios en sus vidas y quieren saber qué ofrece la Comunidad Católica. Es para aquellas per-sonas que no han sido bautizadas; o que,aunque están bautizadas desean completar su iniciación cristiana por medio de los Sacramentos de la Comunión y Confir-mación. Queridos hermanos y hermanas: Comenzamos hoy una serie de catequesis sobre las bienaventuranzas en el Evangelio de san Mateo. Las Bienaventuranzas son la “carta de identidad” del cris-tiano, porque describen el rostro y el estilo de la vida de Jesús. El Evangelio nos dice que Jesús, al ver al gentío que lo seguía, subió al monte, se sentó y dirigiéndose a sus discípulos, proclamó las Bienaventuranzas. El mensaje estaba dirigido a sus discípulos, pero también a la gente; es decir, a los otros, a toda la hu-manidad. Además, el monte donde predica Jesús, nos recuerda al Sinaí, donde Dios dictó a Moisés los diez mandamientos. Ahora, con las bienaventuranzas, Jesús nos da los “nuevos mandamientos”, que no son normas, sino que señalan el camino de la felicidad que Él nos propone. Cada Bienaventuranza está compuesta de tres partes: Inicia con la palabra “bienaventurados” o “felices”, sigue con la situación en que estos se encuentran, y termina con el motivo por el cual serán felices, intro-ducido por la conjunción “porque”, etc. ¿Qué significa la palabra “feliz”, “bienaventurado”? Viene del griego , que significa el que está en con-dición de gracia, la persona que avanza en la amistad con Dios. Esto es importante: Las Bienaventuranzas iluminan las acciones de la vida cristiana y revelan que la presencia de Dios en nosotros nos hace verdaderamente felices. En ocasiones, Dios elige caminos difíciles de entender —a veces, no entende-mos porqué nos pasan ciertas cosas—, por ejemplo, el de nuestros propios límites y el de nuestras derro-tas, pero es allí donde manifiesta la fuerza de su salvación y nos concede la verdadera alegría. Saludo cordialmente a los peregrinos de lengua espa-ñola, venidos de España y de Latinoamérica. De mo-do especial saludo a los alumnos y a los profesores del Colegio San Ildefonso de Almería. Los ani-mo, los animo a leer detenidamente el texto de la Bienaventuranzas. Hoy por ejemplo, tómense un ratito, capítulo quinto de San Mateo, versículo 1 al 11, y lo lean, léanlo y si les gusta también ma-ñana, léanlo, les va hacer bien; y pidan a Dios la gracia para poder vivirlas en medio del mundo en que nos encontramos. Lecturas para el próximo Domingo SEXTO DOMINGO DEL TIEMPO ORDINARIO

Meditación Muchas veces creemos que el cristianismo es una lista larga de normas y mandamientos que debemos cumplir. Es más, parece que Cristo, en este pasaje, nos complica más nuestros deberes. Pero eso no es el cristianismo: “No se comienza a ser cristiano por una decisión ética o una gran idea, (o, podemos añadir a las palabras del Papa, por el cumplimiento de normas), sino por el encuentro con un acontecimiento, con una Persona, que da un nuevo horizonte a la vida y, con ello, una orientación decisiva”. (Deus Caritas est, n.1). Es sólo a través de Cristo, del prisma de su amor, que se puede, no sólo entender, sino sobre todo vivir lo que nos corresponde como sus segui-dores. Si atendemos bien, la lista de leyes que Cristo perfeccio-na en este evangelio tienen necesariamente un punto de unión con el amor, sea a Dios o al prójimo. Acaso, el saber perdonar al que nos ofende, al que ha dañado nues-tra familia, nuestro trabajo, nuestro interior o nuestra situación económica, ¿no es el acto supremo del amor? El guardar nuestra pureza de corazón y de cuerpo, ¿no es un acto heroico de amor a nuestro Señor? El matrimonio, ¿no se puede traducir como fidelidad en el amor que Di-os unió? Y, la coherencia en los deberes contraídos ante Dios, ¿no es una postura de un alma que quiere amar con sinceridad? Sólo Cristo nos da la fuerza, los ánimos, el coraje y la paciencia para ser auténticos seguidores de su Persona; sólo así, nuestro compromiso de cristianos deja de ser un peso y se convierte en una respuesta de amor al Amor. Reflexión apostólica Cristo viene a “dar plenitud” a ley y a los profetas. Viene a purificar en el fuego lo que le impide a nuestro corazón darse plenamente a Dios. Lo que Cristo pide es un plus de justicia en la convivencia con los demás; un plus de santidad en la realización de nuestras tareas más ordinari-as; un plus de generosidad en nuestra oración, en la vivencia de los sacramentos: “si su justicia no es mayor…”. Por eso para Cristo no basta hacer justicia humana con el que nos ofende, pide que lo perdonemos, que nos reconciliemos con él. No le basta que no se cometa adulterio, quiere que custodiemos la pureza de nuestro corazón con una voluntad tajante: “si tu mano derecha es para ti ocasión de pecado, córtatela y arrójala lejos de ti”. No le basta la ley del divorcio, sino que cor-respondamos al designio divino sobre el matrimonio (cfr. Mt 19, 4). A Cristo, en fin, no le basta la vivencia externa de nuestros deberes de cristianos: ¡quiere nuestra coher-encia, nuestra sinceridad de vida: “digan sí cuando sea sí…”!

Intensiones del Papa Francisco para Febrero Escuchar los gritos de los migrantes. Recemos para que el clamor de los hermanos mi-grantes víctimas del tráfico criminal sea escuchado y considerado.

Para que nuestra oración tenga frutos, debemos evitar lo siguiente: La hipocresía: Jesús no quiere que oremos para que los demás nos vean llamando la atención con nuestra actitud exterior. Lo que importa es nuestra actitud interior.

La disipación: Esto quiere decir que hay que evitar las distracciones lo más posible. Preparar nuestra oración, el tiempo y el lugar donde se va a llevar a cabo para poder-nos poner en presencia de Dios.

La multitud de palabras: Esto quiere decir que no se tra-ta de hablar mucho o repetir oraciones de memoria sino de escuchar a Dios. La oración es conformarnos con Él; nues-tros deseos, nuestras intenciones y nuestras necesidades. Por eso no necesitamos decirle muchas cosas. La sincer-idad que usemos debe salir de lo profundo de nuestro cora-zón porque a Dios no se le puede engañar.
