USHER’S NEEDED We are saddened to report that during the past few weeks, we have experienced theft of our collection while it is being taken up. As a result of this violation of our community, we are asking that men and women of our parish consider volunteering as ushers during the collection process. This will enable us to monitor the collection as it is happening, with an usher at each end of the pew as it is occurring. We have not had enough ushers to provide this level of oversight so that we can ensure the security of your hard-earned money which you donate to support our parish. Please contact the ushers at the Mass you attend and offer your assistance during Mass. Secondly, we ask that parishioners be vigilant and as with all security issues, report to our ushers anything you see that is suspicious.

Behold, the days are coming, says the L , when I will raise up a righteous shoot to David. — Jeremiah 23:5a

REFLECTIONS / STEWARDSHIP PAGE 3 JULY 22, 2018

STEWARDSHIP . . .Thank you for supporting your parish, St. Catherine of Alexandria!

Brothers and Sisters in Christ, See if this story sounds familiar. You have had a very long and ring day. You are very red. Nothing appeals to you more than si ng in an easy chair, pu ng your feet up, closing your eyes and just relaxing. And then the telephone rings, you don’t want to answer it, but you do. It’s your next-door neighbor and he needs your help. His sprinkler lines have broken and he needs your help to fix them. What are you going to tell him? What are you going to do? In today’s gospel, Jesus and the apostles find themselves in a similar situa on. The apostles having been sent out to preach the good news have returned and have reported to Jesus all they had done and taught. Mark tells us they were so busy, “that they had no me even to eat.” They were dead red. So, Jesus invites them to “go off by ourselves into a remote place and have some rest.” So, the small group takes a boat to a secret place only to find when they get there that a crowd of people are already there and are wai ng for them. The planned holiday now must give way to the needs of this hungry people, who are hungry for more of what Jesus has to offer them. The sight of these people has a profound effect on Jesus. Mark, wri ng this gospel story, says “his heart was moved with pity for them, for they were like sheep without a shepherd” (Mk 7:34). Shepherds, as we know, provide leadership, guidance and protec on for sheep. Finding new pastures for them and keeping guard over them. So many people in the world, individually and in groups, are like sheep without a shepherd, easy prey for those who would take advantage of them and destroy them. Life shouldn’t be this way. Everyone deserves to be loved and cared for, but the world can be full of sorrow. That is why the apostles’ holiday with Jesus had to wait. Jesus saw needy people and responded right away. Lemn Sissay is a Bri sh poet and broadcaster. His mother came from Ethiopia but had to leave him in the care of others, but nev-er got him back. Lemn grew up in “care homes” that did not care for him at all. He did not even know his own name un l the day he le care. His life was and has been a long journey to find out who he is, where he came from and where he belongs. He says that he has “no next of skin”. Jesus, the good shepherd, tells us differently. We belong to one another and are called to care for one another. We are all “next of skin.” The world needs shepherds. Everyone needs a shepherd. Without the care and love and protec on of a shepherd we will all be lost. Some mes people fall through the cracks in society. No one seems to be responsible. But we are all responsible. I am my brother’s-and my sister’s- keeper. When we see a need it provokes a response in us, a need to help in some way. Being a witness for Jesus and gospel values can be very exhaus ng. The gospel minister needs me to rest. But even while we rest, someone may need help. How will we (you) respond? Faithful

children prepare for receiving their Sacraments, learn about our Roman Catholic Traditions, live out the Gospel and journey in our faith together. The rewards are many. Please pray to see if our Lord is calling you to this Ministry. If interested or for questions, please call Olivia, 781-9855 x 25. **Please note any adult (ages 18+) working with children on a regular basis as a volunteer will need to follow certain guidelines and training before being allowed to help. Please don't let this turn you away. It's for the safety of all involved.

St. Catherine’s Sunday Pre-School and Children’s Homily need volunteers!!
