Thirteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Today’s Readings First Reading: Elisha promises a baby son to the hospitable woman (2 Kings 4). Psalm: For ever I will sing the goodness of the Lord (Psalm 89). Peter and Paul, Apostles Tuesday: The First Martyrs of the Holy Roman Church Wednesday: St. Junípero Serra Friday: St. Thomas; First Friday Saturday: First Saturday; Blessed Virgin Mary Scripture Reflection Day in and day out, we are required to make judgment calls informed by tough, durable, serviceable Christian love. We do what we can do, and God takes notice. God is in charge of rewards, and a glass of water will do when that is what we have to offer with a glad and open heart. Paul gives us a clear theology for the missionary work we do whenever anybody is close at hand. He reminds us that our work, our ministry, is carried on in concert with Christ. We have been baptized into his death and life. In any given moment both life and death are there, a kind of play of shadow and light. Sometimes it’s difficult to tell where shadow leaves off and light begins. God will take care of that, too. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

Archdiocesan Family Prayer Loving and faithful God, through the years the people of our archdiocese have appreciated the prayers and love of Our Lady of Prompt Succor in times of war, disaster, epidemic and illness. We come to you, Father, with Mary our Mother, and ask you to help us in the battle of today against violence, murder and racism. We implore you to give us your wisdom that we may build a community founded on the values of Jesus, which gives respect to the life and dignity of all people. Bless parents that they may form their children in faith. Bless and protect our youth that they may be peacemakers of our time. Give consolation to those who have lost loved ones through violence. Hear our prayer and give us the perseverance to be a voice for life and human dignity in our community. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Our Lady of Prompt Succor, hasten to help us. Mother Henriette Delille, pray for us that we may be a holy family. Amen. St. Catherine of Siena Parish Prayer God, Our Father, we thank you for our parish community of St. Catherine of Siena. Thank you for the many blessings that you have given us, but especially for calling us to serve as disciples of your son, Jesus Christ. As we gather today, we ask that you send your Holy Spirit to guide us in everything that we do. Transform our hearts and lead us closer to you. Help us always to seek to be a parish that is Centered on Christ and Ablaze with Love. We ask all of these things in the name of Jesus, and through the intercession of our Blessed Mother. St. Catherine of Siena, pray for us! St. Michael the Archangel Prayer St. Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle. Be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the devil. May God rebuke him, we humbly pray; and do thou, O Prince of the Heavenly Host, by the power of God, cast into hell Satan and all evil spirits who prowl about the world seeking the ruin of souls. Amen.

Restrictions on gathering are being eased in Phase 2, so we are excited to announce that plans are underway for Alpha 6 to begin August 25! Alpha is an opportunity to explore life and the Catholic Christian faith in a friendly and informal environment. It provides the time and space to consider and discuss the “big questions” in life: What is the meaning of life? Why am I here? For

those who are already practicing Catholics, Alpha offers an opportunity to consider what we believe, why we believe it, and what it has to do with how we live. We revisit our most basic Christian beliefs and renew our openness to the Holy Spirit to be active in our daily lives. Alpha is designed to meet everyone where they are and invite them to grow even closer to Jesus. Alpha takes place over 11 weekly sessions, beginning August 25, and a “weekend retreat” (a Friday evening and Saturday). Each session runs from 6:30-8:30 pm and includes sharing a meal, watching a video, and discussing the video in a small group. We believe that you will find the videos to be engaging and the format to be fun and interesting. If you are interested in joining us for Alpha 6, please go to the website, scschurch.com/alpha/signup, or you can call Pam Truxillo at 281-755-6667 for more information. Church Office Summer Hours The church office closes at 2 pm on Fridays during June and July. Office hours are 8:30 am-4:30 pm, Monday-Thursday; and 8:30 am-2 pm on Friday. The cost for the pilgrimage is $4,688 from New Orleans and other airports, and the trip flyer is available at scschurch.com/downloads, or by calling or visiting the church office. Clarion Herald Available in Print and Online Printed issues of the Clarion Herald are available once again. For those who prefer the online version, every page of every issue of the Clarion Herald is available online at clarionherald.org or by going directly to the e-edition of the Clarion Herald at clarionherald-la.newsmemory.com. A new electronic issue of the Clarion Herald goes live every Tuesday at approximately 3 pm. To Automatic Credit Card/Bank Draft Contributors Thank you to all who contribute to St. Catherine of Siena by means of electronic giving. Now that online giving is available, we ask that you please transition to online giving and discontinue the monthly credit card or bank draft contribution by which you have been supporting the parish. Online giving gives you complete control, allowing you to designate your contribution as one-time or recurring, with the convenience of making changes at any time. Also available by means of online giving is the option to contribute to the Field of Dreams capital campaign. Please contact Fr. Andrew, [email protected] or 835-9343, to discontinue electronic giving and for any help needed with initiating online giving.

Mass Attendance during Phase 2 Our pre-COVID19 Mass and Confession Schedule in Church have resumed. Phase 2 permits 50% occupancy in Churches, which allows St. Catherine of Siena to have 500 people at each Mass. If the number of people in Church exceeds 500, the ushers will ask you to come to another, later Mass. If we have more than 500 people for the 9 am Mass, however, we will offer overflow seating in the Melancon Center. We will livestream the 9 am Mass in the Melancon Center and bring Holy Communion to the Melancon Center at the appropriate time. Wearing a mask is highly encouraged, but not mandatory, at all other Masses. Also, at each Mass, masks are required in the choir loft (seating for approximately 25 people) and the confessional area (seats approximately 15 people). This allows an area at all Masses for people who only want to be around people wearing masks and is available on a first-come, first-served basis. To maximize the number of people in the Church while also maintaining social distancing, we ask that larger families sit in the middle two sections and that smaller families, couples, and individuals sit in the two smaller sections on either side of the larger section. We also added a number of pews along the brick walls and in the Narthex. If anyone is concerned with the increased number of participants at Mass, we would encourage you to attend one of our daily Masses, which usually have 125-150 participants. The people of the Archdiocese are still dispensed from the obligation to attend Sunday Mass. Anyone who is vulnerable or not feeling well should not celebrate Mass in church with other people. General Guidelines for SCS Mass Attendance • Wearing a mask is highly encouraged, but not mandatory. • Every other pew in the Church will be roped off. • Every household should sit 6 feet away from the other

household. • Be mindful of social distancing, and maintain six feet of

distance from others at all times. • The collection baskets will not be passed throughout the

Church. Two baskets will be placed at the foot of the sanctuary for anyone who wants to make an offering before Mass or during the offertory of Mass.

    • The sign of peace may be expressed by means of a smile and/or a nod of the head. No physical sign of peace will be exchanged.

    • When Mass is over, please do not gather in groups in the Narthex and continue to maintain social distancing.

Guidelines for Receiving Holy Communion • Please bring hand sanitizer to use before receiving Communion. • During Communion, please maintain social distancing in the line

by spacing out six feet from the person in front of you. • Communion will be distributed by means of the sacred Host

only. There will be no distribution from the chalice. • Out of consideration and concern for others, we ask everyone

to receive Communion in the hand rather than on the tongue. • When approaching the priest/minister for Communion, place

your hand flat atop your other hand. The minister will place the Host on your hand and then let go of the Host to avoid any contact with your hand.

Wearing a Mask Required at Saturday Vigil Mass Starting on Saturday, June 27, all who attend the Saturday Vigil Mass at St. Catherine of Siena will be required to wear a mask. This is to give worshippers an opportunity to attend Mass in an environment where everyone is wearing a mask. The pews remain marked such that those in attendance seat themselves in keeping with social distancing considerations.

    Two-Minute Testimony: Andrew Fourcade

It can be pretty easy to expect, especially here in southeast Louisiana, that if you grow up Catholic then you’ll be Catholic your whole life. That was my family’s assumption as I grew up in St. Edward the Confessor School and Parish. After my First Communion in second grade there, I had some thoughts about becoming a priest, especially due to the example of the priests there. As soon as I mentioned it in sixth grade, my family and teachers continued to encourage me to pursue it, so the expectations stayed for me to grow up Catholic.

There was a good sense of irony in that, though, since even in elementary school my older sister and I would go to a V.B.S. at my grandmother’s non-denominational Protestant church each summer. My family and I grew closer to that church community over the years, especially as I became more distant from my peers at school. When the time came for me to enter high school, I applied for Haynes Academy for Advanced Studies on Metairie Road. Upon being accepted for my eighth grade year, we decided that it was time for us to explore other denominations, landing in the Protestant church with which we had become so familiar. These two new places exceeded my expectations in a good way. I quickly became involved in the Protestant church by attending Bible studies and becoming active in their youth group. At Haynes I soared academically, joining the school band, becoming a member of their Quiz Bowl team, and participating in their Next Generation Christian group. However, even though my exposure to the Scriptures grew, my love for God did not, and I began to resent not only Catholicism, but also people in my own life. Then, one lazy summer day in 2015, I was channel surfing on TV and came across a documentary on PBS about Benedictine monks called “The Rule.” Getting comfortable in my seat, I was ready to belittle the program’s portrayal of their way of life. Yet as I continued to watch it, I saw something I didn’t expect. In running a boy’s high school in Newark, New Jersey, in one of the most underprivileged neighborhoods in America, the monks there built up a culture of life. Furthermore, the monks there gave the boys (many of whom were my age) a hope for their future simply by the way they live their lives according to the Rule of St. Benedict, a sixth-century guide for monastic life. Quickly I realized that those men were truly living a meaningful life centered in Christ, a life I wanted to live but had been mistaken in how I wanted to achieve it. In the following weeks, I wasn’t sure of what to do. Their monastic way of life grew appealing to me, but pursuing that would mean becoming a Catholic again. To this end, I decided to look back into Catholicism; however I tried to do this more privately through YouTube and other online communities, fearing claims of hypocrisy from friends and family due to an outward anti-Catholic sentiment. Once October came, since it is considered the month of the Rosary, I decided to pray one every night that month, using a plastic set of Rosary beads from my grandfather’s funeral earlier that year. Little by little, I noticed my disposition changing, as my friends peculiarly remarked that I had more energy (I saw it as a

compliment since I’m more introverted), while inwardly I noticed God’s presence more active in my life. By the next summer, I was sure that I wanted to return to the Catholic Church. However, I was uneasy with the idea of leaving my Protestant church, more specifically the relationships I had built there. In prayer I turned to God, asking for the blessings of a smooth transition, but I realized in that prayer that God had already blessed me with a good life, and so the prayer changed to one of trust. In Job’s life He gave and took away, yet Job still blessed His Name (Job 1:21), and so I prayed that if He would continue to provide good things, then I would thank Him, and if He were to take away good things, then the song of thanksgiving would still continue. Soon after, I was placed in an SAT/ACT prep class at Haynes, and I saw it as my ticket out—if I could get my scores high enough, I could move far away and let nobody know that I’d be converting back! In the midst of this, I started to make new friends at my school with classmates I’d never have previously. Things were picking up, and I thanked God for it. Yet no sooner had these things come into my life, they went away—I didn’t score as high as I wanted in my tests, and I was starting to lose my old friends. But even as He took away, I continued to thank Him. Suddenly, for the first time in four or five years, I started to have thoughts of becoming a priest…and I knew it was finally time to come back into the Catholic Church. Attending Mass again was joined with healing in my relationships with my friends and even some of my family, while the thoughts about priesthood only grew stronger. For the first time in my life, I had no anxieties for the future, and instead I focused on building an actual relationship with Christ. Suddenly most of what I deemed important for my life faded from my view; I still chose to be active in my extracurriculars at Haynes, but these became second rate to me. I might be biased by my recent experience as a high school student, but teens definitely have a lot of undue stress put on them, especially in deciding what their future will be and building their résumés for college all in just a couple of years. Surely, these are highly important things to consider, yet at an advanced studies academy, the expectation can become controlling. Most of my friends were (figuratively) pulling their hair out to reach the deadlines for application essays; meanwhile, I began to go to the adoration chapel at St. Catherine of Siena across the street each day, growing in the desire to keep Christ in the center of my life and discerning the decision to enter the seminary instead of university, trusting that even if He isn’t calling me to be a priest, I would grow further in trust of His ways. Now two years into my seminary formation, I still can never truly expect what will happen next. Even during my sophomore year at St. Joseph Seminary College, with my parents divorcing, one of my closest friends having to leave formation due to complications after an eye removal surgery, and the Covid-19 pandemic, there’s no assurance that God only gives us good things. Instead, it’s Faith that is the assurance of what we hope for—our expectations—the conviction of what we can’t see (Hebrews 11:1), and through it I have only to trust Him all the more.

If you would like to share your testimony, please contact Joni in the parish office.

An Act of Spiritual Communion My Jesus, I believe that You are present in the Most Holy Sacrament. I love You above all things, and I desire to receive You into my soul. Since I cannot at this moment receive You sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart. I embrace You as if You were already there and unite myself wholly to You. Never permit me to be separated from You. Amen.
