R.C. I .A. TESTIMONIES From the time of Barnabas escorting Saul to the apostles (Acts 9:26-27), Christians have given witness for those seeking baptism or reception into the full communion of the Catholic Church. Today, RCIA sponsors, team and community members give testimony concerning readi-ness for initiation.

MONICA HIGDON

Monica was baptized into the Baptist faith at the age of 13 and experienced the call to-ward Christianity as she at-tended youth group and oth-er evangelization experiences in her teen years. She has attended Mass regularly with her husband Stephen for

more than 7 years. Monica had thought of entering the process to become Catholic for quite some time, but put it off as she thought it would take too much of her time. She also had some questions about the real presence in the Eucharist. As her son Simon entered his First Communion preparatory year, she felt called to finally commit to the RCIA process to

AMERICA STAR HILL

Star grew up attending church with her family, an d she came to us as a bap-tized Christian with a strong belief in God. She married Scott Hill in 2011, and he is a Catholic. Thomas was born the following year, and both Star and Scott realized they wanted their children to know God and to be able to attend

church and worship together as a family. That is how Star began her journey in the RCIA process. There is so much to learn about the Catholic faith and early on Star had many questions, but with the answers came a better understanding of the Gospel teachings. Star has grown spiritually and has opened her heart and mind to listening and accepting the Word of God. She has her personal prayer life and talks to her son about Jesus and helps him learn to say various prayers. Star is humbled by Jesus Christ who died on the cross for our sins, and she will tell you the most moving experience in her life has been on Good Friday when she stood near the altar holding the crucifix while the congregation came forward one by one to venerate the cross.

(Vatican Radio) Pope Francis says that although Christians are still persecuted and killed in the name of God, the Holy Spirit gives them the strength to face martyrdom as they bear witness to their faith. The Pope was speaking during his homily on Monday at Mass in the Casa Santa Marta. Pope Francis finds inspiration in the Gospel reading of the day in which Jesus says to his disciples: “When the Advocate comes whom I will send you from the Father, the Spirit of truth who proceeds from the Father, he will testify to me. And you will also testi-fy”. He explains that the Lord speaks of the future, of the Cross that awaits us, and he speaks of the Holy Spirit who helps us give witness as Christians. He also speaks of “the scandal of per-secutions”, the “scandal of the Cross”. The Pope points out that the life of the Church is a journey that is guided by the Holy Spirit who reminds us of Je-sus’ words and “teaches us things that Jesus wasn’t able to tell us”. The Holy Spirit – he says – is our com-panion in this journey and defends us from “the scandal of the Cross”. And the Pope points out that the Cross is a scandal for the Jews who “ask for signs” and it is foolishness for the Greeks - the pagans - who “ask for knowledge and new ideas”.

Christians on the other hand – says Pope Francis – preach the crucified Christ. So Jesus prepares his disciples: “They will expel you from the syna-gogues: in fact, the hour is coming when everyone who kills you will think he is offering worship to God”: “Today we are seeing those who kill Christians in the name of God because they think they are not believers. This is Christ’s Cross: ‘They will do this because they have not known either the Father or me’. This happened to me – Jesus says – it will happen to you too – the persecutions, the tribulations – but do not be scandalized: the Holy Spirit will guide us and help us under-stand”.

Pope Francis then recalled Sunday’s telephone conversation with the Cop-tic Pope Tawadros II on the occasion of the “Day of friendship between the Coptic Orthodox Church and the Catholic Church”. “I was remembering the faithful of his Church who were slain on the beach because they were Christians. Thanks to the strength given them by the Holy Spirit they were not scandal-ized. They died with the name of Jesus on their lips. This is the strength of the Spirit. The testimony. Martyrdom is the supreme testimony”. But - Pope Francis continues – there is

also the testimony we give every day, the testimony of rendering present the life-giving message of Easter which guides us towards the truth and reminds us of Jesus’ words: “A Christian who does not take the dimension of martyr-dom seriously in life does not understand the road that Jesus has indicated: a road that invites us to bear witness every day, defending the rights of others; defending our children; mothers and fathers who defend their family; so many sick people who bear witness and suffer for the love of Jesus. All of us have the possibility of bringing forward this life-giving Easter message, bearing witness, without being scandalized”. Pope Francis concludes with this prayer: “Let us ask the Lord for the grace to receive the Holy Spirit who will remind us of Jesus’ words, who will guide us in truth throughout our lives and prepare us to bear witness in our lives, with small every day martyrdoms, or with a great martyrdom, according to God’s will”.

explore entering into full communion with the Catholic Church. For many years, Monica has experienced a conversion of the mind. During her time with RCIA, she has expe-rienced a conversion of the heart and spirit. She has become gentler and more patient with her family and those around her. She has allowed Christ to work his healing love inside her heart, and has shown tremen-dous growth in her ability to forgive others, as well as herself. She shows great dedication to passing the Cath-olic faith on to her children and can be seen helping them better understand the Mass on Sundays, in daily Mass, and in sharing her love of the rosary with them. She looks forward to being able to receive the Eucharist along with her husband in order to unite their family more closely with Christ. Over the past several months, Monica has become an active, vibrant member of the parish of St. Theresa’s Catholic Church. She has participated in a variety of events and gatherings and has expressed interest in becoming more involved in various ministries through-out the parish. She now more fully understands the ties between members of the Body of Christ, and displays an eagerness to become a contributing member of that Body. She feels called to share the love of God with those around her, and to give back to the people and parish who have walked with her on the journey to-ward Catholicism. Monica’s humility is evident through her actions and words. She approaches Catholicism with the energy and spiritual state of a child – desiring more and more of Jesus. By allowing Him to enter her heart during this RCIA journey, she has grown tremendously as a person and as a Christian.

SPECIAL COLLECTION NEXT WEEKEND: On May 24th, the second collection will be dedicated to Fr. Jose Tharayil’s home diocese of Kottayam, in India. Our generous re-sponse serves as a robust “thank you” to Fr. Jose’s bishop for granting him permission to work here.

The Catholic Church is rich in traditions that are new to Star. One is our devotion to Mary, the Mother of Jesus. Star has learned to reach out to the Blessed Virgin Mary for help and has even purchased a statue of Mary to dis-play in her home. She has told me she regularly prays the rosary after using a CD to help her learn how to pray the rosary and other prayers to Mary. Star is sincere about her desire to become a Catholic. She loves our Lord and relies on His strength and guid-ance to help her through life and is thankful for all her blessings. She looks forward to the day when she can fully share in the Mass by receiving the body of Christ in the Eucharist. She looks forward to the healing power of the sacrament of confession and absolution by the priest.

The St. Theresa Catholic School Flos Cantuum choir and chamber orchestra will present a program of choral rep-ertoire entitled Out From the Darkness featuring Han-del’s Messiah and Gabriel Faure’s Requiem. Admission is $10.00 per person. Tickets are available at the school office or at the door on the night of the concert. Bring your friends and fami-ly to this wonderful event. The children love sharing their music with you!

HOW TO GO TO CONFESSION In order to make a good confession, we first examine our conscience, asking God’s help that we might know our sins and repent of them.

Rite of Reconciliation

Priest: In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.

Penitent: Amen.

Penitent: Bless me, Father, for I have sinned. It has been (how long?) since my last confession. My Sins are: (confess your sins)

Priest: (gives you spiritual counsel and as signs a penance in atonement for your sins)

Penitent: (Pray an Act of Contrition, for example): Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me, a sinner.

—or— O my God, I am heartily sorry for having offended Thee, and I detest all my sins, because I dread the loss of heaven, and the pains of hell; but most of all because they offend Thee, my God, Who are all good and deserving of all my love. I firmly resolve with the help of Thy grace, to confess my sins, to do penance, and to amend my life. Priest: The priest prays the formula of abso lution. At the conclusion, say, “Amen.” Priest: Go in peace. Penitent: Thanks be to God. (do your penance as soon as possible).

ASCENSION OF THE LORD

Gladden us with holy joys, almighty God, and make us rejoice with devout thanksgiving,

for the Ascension of Christ your Son Is our exaltation,

and, where the Head has gone before in glory, the Body is called to follow in hope.

Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,

who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,

one God, for ever and ever. Amen.
