Faith Family Friendship Dear Parents/Guardians Welcome I would like to welcome all staff, students and families to the new school year. I hope you all had an enjoyable and restful break and are well rested and ready for the new year ahead. A special welcome to new staff this year, Mrs Sally Casson (TA Kinder- garten), Miss Bec Hartwell (Pre-Primary Teacher) and Mrs Marketa Pilkington (Year Five Teacher). We also have had some new students commence this year and we extend a warm welcome to them and their families. Introduction As this being the first newsletter for the year, I would like to take the opportunity to briefly introduce myself. My name is Mr Robert Palladino, and I have approximately thirty years of experience in education. Of those, ten years have been as a principal. On a personal level, I have five daughters and six grandchildren, so I know first hand what it is like as a parent. As a result, I would like to stress the importance that the school and parents are in partnership in educating the students. If your child is having issues settling in, please let the class teacher know so we can work together to solve the issues. I look forward to meeting and working in partnership with you all during my time at St Cecilias. Thought of the Day If you judge people, you have no time to love them. Dear Parents/Guardians

Welcome I would like to welcome all staff, students and families to the new school year. I hope you all had an enjoyable and restful break and are well rested and ready for the new year ahead. A special welcome to new staff this year, Mrs Sally Casson (TA Kinder-garten), Miss Bec Hartwell (Pre-Primary Teacher) and Mrs Marketa Pilkington (Year Five Teacher).

I look forward to meeting and working in partnership with you all during my time at St Cecilia’s.

School Board AGM The Catholic Education Commission of WA requires that all Catholic schools hold an Annual School Community Meeting. The purpose of the meeting is for the School Board to report to the Community on the overall manage-ment of the school. Where necessary, elections take place at this meeting to fill any vacancies for the coming year. This meeting will be held on Thursday, 28 February at 6:30 pm in the Hall. If you are interested in nominating someone for the School Board, please leave your name at the office or fill out and return the slip below.

Functions of the School Board • Planning for the present and future operation of the school. • Providing membership on selection panels for the employment of staff to the school. • Passing information on the school and about Catholic Education to persons and organisations in the community. • Liaising in all matters relating to the financial management of the school with persons and organisations in the local Catholic community. • Managing all finances associated with the school. • Advising the Principal concerning school policy that has financial implications.

Criteria for Membership of the Board • Possession of special skills that will be an asset to the Board • A deep interest in the welfare of all students and staff • A desire to give service to the Catholic community • A keenness to promote Catholic schooling • An ability to work co-operatively and constructively with all other members of the Board • A sufficiency of time to devote to Board duties

Meet the Teacher/P&F Colour Run and BBQ On Friday, 22 February, the opportunity exists to meet your child’s teacher, check out the classrooms and then watch the children participate in the “Colour Run’. This will then be followed by a BBQ. Thank you in advance to Mrs Chantal Foster for organising the “Colour Run’ and BBQ and to her many helpers from the P&F who will as-sist. The schedule for the afternoon is as follows:

Please Note: It is advisable for the students to wear clothes that you don ’t mind getting colour powder on (although the powders do wash out easily). A change of clothes and towel are also recommended as the students will become wet during the afternoon.

CENSUS DAY Friday, February 15 The government funding we receive is determined by the number of students at the school, and unexplained ab-sences can lead to the school receiving fewer funds. Please ensure your child is at school on Friday, February 15, and if they are not, then please notify the school in writing with a valid reason.

Leader’s Forum I will be away on Monday, February 25 attending the Leader’s Forum in Perth. Mrs Sheen will assume responsibil-ity for the running of the school in my absence.

The Lighter Side of Life Children were lined up in the cafeteria of a Catholic school for lunch. At the head of the table was a large pile of apples. The nun made a note, "Take only one; God is watching." Moving through the line, at the other end of the table was a large pile of chocolate chip cookies. A boy wrote a note, "Take all you want; God is watching the ap-ples!".

God Bless and enjoy the coming weekend.

A warm welcome back to school to all our returning students and a further welcome to all our new families and staff. Beginning of Year Mass Last Friday we celebrated the return to school with our Beginning of Year Mass. It was a wonderful way to begin our year together and to welcome new students, staff and families to St Cecilia’s. It was also wonderful to have some parents joining us to welcome the start of the new school year. Please remember that you are always wel-come at any Mass we hold during the year. Our next whole school Mass will be on Wednesday 06 March to celebrate the beginning of Lent with an Ash Wednesday Mass. We will hold a burning of the ashes ceremony in the Undercover Area at 8:45am before mov-ing to the Church for the Mass.

Sacraments This year there will be two Sacraments offered to students; First Holy Communion and First Reconciliation. First Communion is offered to students in Year Four, and other students that haven’t received this Sacrament. To receive this Sacrament, students must have taken part in First Reconciliation. The First Holy Communion Mass will be on the weekend of 22 and 23 June, with a Mass in each of the parishes. First Reconciliation is offered to students in Year Three and any other students that haven’t received this Sacra-ment. The Mass for First Reconciliation will be held in early November at St Cecilia’s Church. Enrolment forms for each Sacrament will be sent home, via the school, closer to the sacrament date. If you have students in these years then please check the posters that will be displayed in each foyer area and outside the office for more information. Confirmation is offered to students in Years Five and Six. This sacrament takes place every second year to coin-cide with the Bishop’s visit to Port Hedland and will be take place in 2020.

Assembly Next Monday will be the first week of our Values Assemblies. The first value we will explore is Love with a new value being introduced each fortnight. Classes will follow up with activities in the classroom and displays of each value will be made in the noticeboard located in the Undercover Area. Information may be included in the news-letter and photos posted on the school website. As with our whole school Masses, parents are invited to join us for our Assemblies with Monday Assemblies tak-ing place in the odd numbered weeks and Thursday morning Assemblies in the even numbered weeks.

Carpark When parking in the school carpark, please observe the reverse parking signs. This is to ensure the safety of our children as it can be difficult to see younger students if you are trying to reverse out of a carpark.

If you are dropping your children off at school in the morning, and you are not parking your car, the drop off must be done in the drive through and must be done at the two stopping bays; please don’t drive through if a car is al-ready stopped at the stopping bay. Children should not be getting out of cars while they are stopped on or near the crossing, in the middle of the carpark or at the exit of the carpark. This causes safety issues for other pedestri-ans and drivers. Also, please ensure that your speed is a speed that allows you plenty of time to watch out for and if necessary stop for small children that may be walking in the carpark. There are 40km/hr signs around the school for during school times and 20km/hr signs on the gate as you enter the carpark, yet there are some drivers that are still driving well above this speed limit. As a result we have had some near misses between cars and pe-destrians. Remember, higher speeds mean longer braking times and distances. Please observe the speed limits as displayed in and around the school to ensure the safety of our children.

A further reminder for when collecting students of an afternoon. If you are collecting your child from the drop off/pick up zone, we ask that you remain in your car and wait for your turn to get to the front of the line. Students are released two at a time to the two stopping bays where they will get into their cars. At no time are students to walk to a car that is further down the line and parents must not overtake cars in front, as this has resulted in some near misses between other cars and pedestrians. Again, parents are asked not to pull up in the middle of the carpark or near the crossing to pick up students.

Your patience and cooperation is always appreciated when student safety needs to be considered.

Parent Involvement Do you have any special skills or talents that you would like to share with our students? Do you have a half hour that you could spare a cou-ple of times throughout the term? We would love for you to come in and visit us and our students, just like Dean Solman. Mr Solman has come in twice already this term to coach and referee some of our younger students dur-ing a lunch time soccer game. Today, Mr Solman and the boys were joined by our Parish Priest, Father Ed-ward. The boys were very impressed with Father Ed-ward’s footwork! If you are interested in coming in to lead the students in some lunch time activities, please contact Mrs Sheen to express your interest.
