Welcome to St. Christopher’s Episcopal Church, an open and affirming congregation in the

worldwide Anglican Communion.

You are welcome here . . .

• if you are married or single, for we will partner with you;

• if you are a parent or a child of one, for we are all family together;

• if you know what you believe or have no idea what you believe, for we are one in our longing for deeper knowledge of God;

• if you are from this place or a stranger from far away, for we were all once strangers ourselves;

• if you are straight or gay, black or white, rich or poor . . .

No matter who you are, we welcome you, praying that you will find here what you seek. In fact, we pray that you will find here the love that is Christ’s law – love that bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things – knowing that God’s love is bigger than anything we can ask or imagine.

Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

The Hebrew Scripture Reading: Genesis 1:24-31

And God said, “Let the earth bring forth living creatures of every kind: cattle and creeping things and wild animals of the earth of every kind.” And it was so. God made the wild animals of the earth of every kind, and the cattle of every kind, and everything that creeps upon the ground of every kind. And God saw that it was good.

Then God said, “Let us make humankind in our image, according to our likeness; and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the wild animals of the earth, and over every creeping thing that creeps upon the earth.”

So God created humankind in God’s image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them.

God blessed them, and God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth and subdue it; and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the air and over every living thing that moves upon the earth.” God said, “See, I have given you every plant yielding seed that is upon the face of all the earth, and every tree with seed in its fruit; you shall have them for food. And to every beast of the earth, and to every bird of the air, and to everything that creeps on the earth, everything that has the breath of life, I have given every green plant for food.” And it was so. God saw everything that God had made, and indeed, it was very good. And there was evening and there was morning, the sixth day.

Reader Hear what the Spirit is saying to God’s People. People Thanks be to God.

The Gospel Reading: Matthew 11:25-30

Deacon The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Matthew.

People Glory to you, Lord Christ Jesus said, “I thank you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and the intelligent and have revealed them to infants; yes, Father, for such was your gracious will. All things have been handed over to me by my Father; and no one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and anyone to whom the Son chooses to reveal him. Come to me, all you that are weary and are carrying heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me; for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”

7

O sweet maker of all, we ask your blessing on every creature present here today, the large and the small. May they live peacefully in praise of you. Bless us all to love your creation, and revere its sacredness. We ask this blessing in the name of the one who was, is, and always will be, our Creator, to whom every creature belongs. Amen.

All sing the following as people bring pets, pet photographs, or stuffed pets forward to be blessed, returning to their seats after the blessing.

Animal Blessing Hymn #405 (The Hymnal 1982) Royal Oak ‘All things bright and beautiful’

After all have been blessed, the Presider sprinkles Holy Water over the People and Pets as the following words are spoken,

May God grant us grace to imitate our brother Francis in his reverence for all creation, and by the waters of Baptism, may God make us a blessing to all creatures. Amen.

9

All are welcome to share in Communion. If you seek a deeper life with Christ and sharing of that strength and life in the world, we invite you to God’s Table. While Baptism is the ancient rite of inclusion in the Church, we believe God is

working in us all to draw us closer in love.

LITURGY OF THE TABLE

Today’s loose plate offering helps support the Animal Care League, a local, not-for-profit organization dedicated to providing mistreated or homeless animals with food, shelter, and medical attention until a loving family can be found. The Animal Care League is a non-kill shelter and is not supported by government funds.

Offertory Anthem Richard Farrant ‘Lord, For Thy Tender Mercy's Sake’

Offertory Hymn Ellacombe ‘O God, Your Creatures Fill the Earth’

(Tune: "I Sing the Mighty Power of God”)

Verses printed below.

1. O God, your creatures fill the earth

with wonder and delight,

And every living thing has worth and beauty in your sight.

So playful dolphins dance and swim;

Your sheep bow down and graze.

Your songbirds share a morning hymn

To offer you their praise.

2. You made the pets we welcome in —

They're wondrous blessings, too.

With paws and whiskers, wings and fins,

They offer praise to you.

O Lord, you call us to embrace These creatures in our care.

May we show kindness, love and grace to all

pets everywhere.

3. You made the creatures on each farm;

You know the things they need.

May they grow healthy, safe from harm,

And safe from human greed.

Just as a shepherd loves the sheep,

Page 11: St. Christopher’s Episcopal Church Oak Park, Illinois · St. Christopher’s Episcopal Church Oak ... these things from the wise and the intelligent and have revealed ... silently

10

You know their joy, their pain.

Lord, bless the animals we keep; May all farms be humane.

4. Your creatures live in every land;

They fill the sky and sea.

O Lord, you give us your command To love them tenderly.

We're called to have dominion here —

To care for them always.

By loving creatures you hold dear, We offer you our praise.

The Great Thanksgiving Eucharistic Prayer C Stand as able. The people’s responses are in bold print.

The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give God thanks and praise.

God of all power, Ruler of the Universe, you are worthy of glory and praise. Glory to you for ever and ever.

At your command all things came to be: the vast expanse of interstellar space, galaxies, suns, the planets in their courses, and this fragile earth, our island home. By your will they were created and have their being.

From the primal elements you brought forth the human race, and blessed us with memory, reason, and skill.

You made us the rulers of creation. But we turned against you, and betrayed your trust; and we turned against one another. Have mercy, Lord, for we are sinners in your sight. Again and again, you called us to return. Through prophets and sages you revealed your righteous Law. And in the fullness of time you sent your only Son, born of a woman, to fulfill your Law, to open for us the way of freedom and peace. By his blood, he reconciled us. By his wounds, we are healed.

Therefore we praise you, joining with the heavenly chorus, with prophets, apostles, and martyrs, and with all those in every generation who have looked to you in hope, to proclaim with them your glory, in their unending hymn:

The people stand or kneel. The Presider continues

And so, Father, we who have been redeemed by him, and made a new people by water and the Spirit, now bring before you these gifts. Sanctify them by your Holy Spirit to be the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ our Lord.

On the night he was betrayed he took bread, said the blessing, broke the bread, and gave it to his friends, and said, "Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me."

After supper, he took the cup of wine, gave thanks, and said, "Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me."

Remembering now his work of redemption, and offering to you this sacrifice of thanksgiving, We celebrate his death and resurrection, as we await the day of his coming.

Lord God of our Fathers and Mothers: God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, Sarah, Rebecca, Leah and Rachel; God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ: Open our eyes to see your hand at work in the world about us. Deliver us from the presumption of coming to this Table for solace only, and not for strength; for pardon only, and not for renewal. Let the grace of this Holy Communion make us one body, one spirit in Christ, that we may worthily serve the world in his name.

Risen Lord, be known to us in the breaking of the Bread.

Page 13: St. Christopher’s Episcopal Church Oak Park, Illinois · St. Christopher’s Episcopal Church Oak ... these things from the wise and the intelligent and have revealed ... silently

12

Accept these prayers and praises, Father, through Jesus Christ our great High Priest, to whom, with you and the Holy Spirit, your Church gives honor, glory, and worship, from generation to generation. AMEN. Presider And now as our Savior Christ has taught us we are bold to say

Presider and People Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

Breaking of the Bread

The Bread is broken and a moment for silent prayer is offered, after which all sing the following fraction anthem

are welcome to come forward to receive a blessing,

Animals may come forward to receive an unblessed treat.

Communion Hymn #318 (The Hymnal 1982) Nyack ‘Here, O my Lord, I see thee face to face’

All stand as able for the Post-Communion Prayer and Blessing.

Post-Communion Prayer Attributed to Francis of Assisi

All stand as able, and say together the following prayer

Lord, make us instruments of your peace. Where there is hatred, let us sow love; where there is injury, pardon; where there is discord, union; where there is doubt, faith; where there is despair, hope; where there is darkness, light; where there is sadness, joy. Grant that we may not so much seek to be consoled as to console; to be understood as to understand; to be loved as to love. For it is in giving that we receive; it is in pardoning that we are pardoned; and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life. Amen.

Blessing From St. Clare

Live without fear: your Creator has made you holy, has always protected you, and loves you as a mother. Go in peace to follow the good road and may God’s blessing be with you always. Amen.

Closing Hymn #408 (The Hymnal 1982) Mit Freuden zart ‘Sing praise to God who reigns above’

Fall Adult Formation-Church and Politics

After a week off, today we'll resume our discussions of how Christians have in the past tried to embody a faithful relationship between church and world. In our last session, we discussed Christendom triumphant after the fall of the Roman Empire, and the different ways the church and government were intertwined in medieval Russia, Reformation England, and Reformation Geneva. Next week we examine Martin Luther's two kingdom doctrine and slightly more contemporary models of dividing God's rule of the world between sacred and secular. And of course, what these models have to teach us about ourselves.

Gift card order forms are in the pews. Next order date is October 8.
