Executive Director’s Corner
Like SAVE on
Dear Friends of SAVE,
In recent days a number of people have asked me howimportant are the charitable gifts SAVE receives fromindividuals, organizations and businesses? I quicklyreply that they are essential. In fact, it is largelybecause of these charitable dollars that we are able to
provide services to meet the individual needs of the men and women we serve. That is the cornerstone of SAVE’s programs and work.
One example that clearly illustrates the importance of private donations is theCommunity Living Fund (CLF). This special fund is dedicated to the Residentialprogram and helps our residential consumers live as independently as possible, including sharing in community experiences like ballgames, theatre, etc. The aver-age state contribution to residential is $3.37 per day. This doesn’t even begin tocover the costs involved for housing, food, personal needs, etc., so the CommunityLiving Fund is literally life-giving.
Yet another place where private gifts are extremely important, in fact are the onlysource of income, is the SAVE Foundation. This organization was created about 15years ago to establish an endowment that would provide income from investments,as well as establish a strong foundation for capital needs in the future. Over theyears the endowment fund has grown as individuals include SAVE in their estateplanning and memorial and honorific gifts. In the recent past, due to the Statedeferring payments for several months, these funds have provided the resources tokeep our doors open and meet payroll.
As you can see, the charitable gifts we receive are crucial to the work, programsand mission of SAVE. I want to take this opportunity to extend a big THANK YOU forthese gifts that extend not only a helping hand to the consumers, but also assurethat our programs and services are of the highest quality. If you ever have anyquestions about SAVE’s work, or how the money we receive is spent, please don’thesitate to contact me. We want the help we provide to those in need to be asopen and transparent as possible.
Thank you again, one and all, for all you do for SAVE.

Easy Ways to Help!Life Insurance as a Giftby James Freeman
One way to provide a substantial gift to help sustain SAVE’s work isthrough a life insurance policy. This is a “low out-of-pocket” way to fulfillyour desire to support the men and women SAVE serves. Maybe this is agood time to review the life insurance policies you have in place. Do theystill meet the goals established when they were created? If not, you canexplore changes that will help you achieve your current wishes.
Almost everyone has some kind of life insurance coverage. Usually thepurpose is to provide financial support for surviving family members in theevent of premature death. In reviewing your current situation and consider-ing the advantages of a life insurance gift, you may reach the conclusionthat such a gift would be the best way for you to make a charitable contri-bution. Especially if the coverage you have is more than you need.
For example, when your children were young, life insurance may havebeen purchased to insure their education. If they’re grown, well-educatedand out on their own, the original need no longer exists. Or maybe a policywas purchased to help assist in retirement, but your financial situation issuch that you no longer require it. Or if your policy was designated to payoff the mortgage on your home, but it is already paid off, then the mort-gage insurance is no longer needed.
There are numerous ways to make gifts through life insurance. For spe-cific information about accomplishing this, contact your life insuranceagent or an estate planning professional.
Keep in mind you don’t have to contribute an entire policy in order tomake a gift. You can name SAVE as a co-beneficiary to receive a portion ofthe proceeds. The members of the SAVE Foundation Board of Directorswould be pleased to provide you and your advisors with more information.
For more information about insurance and other options for giving to SAVE, callJames Freeman at 618-234-1992.

Consumer SpotlightRobert Haas
Robert Haas has participated in the SAVEprogram for 37 years, which is before hegraduated from Belleville East High Schoolin 1977. During his senior year, a counselorsuggested that he take two part-time jobs inthe afternoon – two hours helping in theoffice at the high school and two hours
working at SAVE. Then after he graduated, Robert became a fulltime participant in the SAVE work force.
Robert is the youngest of five boys and lives with his older brotherin Belleville. Since the age of five, he’s been an avid St. LouisCardinals fan!. His hobbies include painting , watching Westernmovies and listening to “oldies” and country music. He loves extracrispy fried chicken, hamburgers, BBQ ribs and vanilla ice cream withchocolate sauce. Mmmmm!
Robert has enjoyed his long tenure at SAVE and notes that he hasworked in all of the buildings at Turkey Hill, except administration. “Iwent there once,” he said. “It was too messy.” He notes that he hasseen a lot of changes at SAVE which have brought new opportunitiesand challenges. Robert said he is especially appreciative of staffmember Sue Helferty for her support over the years.
Editor’s note: The Consumer Spotlight article in each newsletter is a collaborativeeffort by Consumer Tineka Howell and Development Director Jim Freeman. Theywork together to tell the stories of the men and women at SAVE, so our readerscan share in the lives of those we serve. Your comments and suggestions arealways welcome.

TRIVIA NIGHT RAISED
More than $5,000!
This year’s “Smarty Pants” themed TriviaNight attracted more than 140 peoplein 15 teams, who used their collective
wisdom for friendly competition. Trivia Master,Roger Schlueter (Belleville News-Democrat’s
“Answer Man”) challenged the participants to dig deep into their memory banks to correctly answer100 questions (plus 10 survivor questions) that ranged from history to music to pop culture.
In the end, $5,300 was raised to support SAVE’s important work. The SAVE Foundation Board, which organizes this annual event, would like to thank the ROHO Group for its lead sponsorship andall the individuals and businesses that provided round and table sponsorships. Thank you to everyonewho donated the 50 items that were included in the Silent Auction, and all those who couldn’t partici-pate, but provided outright gifts.
