Dear Parishioners, As we continue the process of becoming one united parish, I would like to thank you for your feedback, patience and support. Change, as we know, is often difficult. However, it also offers new possibilities for growth, relationships and a renewed faith. I personally have witnessed the fruits of our parishes coming together. For example, the beautiful Triduum Liturgies, outstanding events planned by dedicated and talented individuals from each parish and opportunities to grow in faith together through our youth and adult faith formation programs. Let us continue to keep our eyes fixed on our Lord Jesus Christ, as we journey together living out our baptismal call of discipleship. On any journey, it’s helpful to look at the progress we’ve made and also where we are heading. At this point, I would like to recap the steps we have made since the beginning of the merger process and the plan for our future.
October 2018 New clergy team formed to serve our parish grouping
October 2018 New Interim Mass schedule established
November 2018 One Pastoral Council formed; conducted listening sessions at all four parishes
December 2018 Moved to a single bulletin
January 2019 Moved to a combined website
February 2019 Summary of listening sessions mailed to all parishioners of the four parishes, along with parish surveys regarding feedback on the Interim Mass Schedule
March 2019 Pastoral Council reviewed and summarized Interim Mass Schedule Survey results
April 2019 Summary of Interim Mass Schedule Survey results published in the bulletin; second parish survey made available online and hard copies were available in church vestibules
May 2019 Diocesan Parish Services met with Staff, Pastoral and Finance Councils to discuss and explain the phases involved in completing the merger process; revised Weekend Mass Schedule proposed by members of Pastoral and Finance Councils based on results of parish surveys
June 2019 Interim Weekend Mass Schedule Revision Form submitted to Regional Vicar for review
In the next couple of weeks, we will present a proposed merger timeline in the bulletin that will lead us to an anticipated merger date of July 2020, at which point we will become one parish. The question often arises, “What does it mean to become one parish?” A parish by definition must have three components: 1) a designated territory or geographical location; 2) people; and 3) priests to serve the people. This is different from a church, which is a sacred place of worship in service to the parish. Our new parish will be served by the churches of St. Clare of Assisi, St. Elizabeth of Hungary, Holy Spirit and St. Thomas à Becket.
I would like to take this opportunity to address some other questions you might have regarding the merger process.
What is a merger? Canonically, a merger is defined as the modification of a parish by which multiple parishes come together to form a new parish.
Who approves the merger? After Bishop Zubik receives the petition from the administrator of a parish grouping, he will undergo the necessary consultation with the Presbyteral (Priest) Council and regional vicars and any other consultation he deems advisable.
How long is the process? Approximately three to four months (from the date that the petition is submitted to Bishop Zubik, to the date that we become one parish).
How is the new parish named? The petition to Bishop Zubik to merge parishes in the grouping will include the recommendation of three names for his consideration in the naming of the new parish. Although Bishop Zubik will consider the three names, it will be his decision whether or not he selects one of the names.
Will church buildings close as a result of the merger process? At some point, the administrator, working with staff and lay leadership, will have to decide what buildings will best serve the needs of the new parish.
This of course is not an exhaustive list, however, I wanted to address some questions that may be especially pertinent to you at this time. In the early fall, we plan to hold another series of listening sessions and will be happy to answer questions and address concerns you may have. I will make every effort to keep you informed throughout this process and I thank you again for your continued support. Sincerely in Christ, Father Bob

ST. ELIZABETH SCHOOL MATH-A-THON Can solving math problems make a
huge difference in our world today?
Absolutely! Every year the students
in grades K-8 at St. Elizabeth
Elementary School can participate in
the St. Jude Math-A-Thon fundraiser.
This year sixty-one students solved
math problems and collected
donations from family and friends. All of their hard work
truly paid off! They collected a grand total of $4,931!
A special thank you goes to Anabell Lopez in third grade.
She had $1,250 in online donations! Kudos to the
following students as well: Erin Hirsh in Kindergarten
raised $510! Hailey McCartney in third grade raised $335!
Bryce Nowicki in fifth grade raised $315! There was even
a group of fifth grade boys who decorated paper footballs
and sold those to people and then gave the proceeds to
St. Jude! The boys in that group were Bodi Rieger, Joseph
Maleski, Joey Obara, Logan Hindmarch, Will Thurman,
Bryce Nowicki, and Aiden Bobbs. We had an extremely
successful year with Math-A-Thon. Thank you for being
so generous with your time and your money. St. Jude truly
appreciates it!
8TH GRADE STOCK MARKET PROJECT This stock market project gave students a glimpse into how the stock market works and a chance to experience gains and losses. Several weeks ago, the
eighth grade students researched and chose three stocks to “purchase”. Each found the cost of one share of each stock and “purchased” 100 shares of that stock. Each Wednesday in computer class for the next five weeks, students located the closing cost of that stock for the previous day and kept a spreadsheet of their results. Students then prepared a Google Slide presentation of their results and wrote about what they learned and whether or not they would recommend purchasing their stocks. The top three students who had the greatest overall gain were awarded with an Eat’n Park gift card. Those students are: Ava Territ – 7.44% overall gain; Stocks: Walt Disney, Addidas & Target. Daniel Fitzgerald – 5.14% overall gain; Stocks: Comcast, Citi Group & Macy’s. R. J. Schilinski – 3.02% overall gain; Stocks: Delta Airlines, American Airlines & Coca Cola.
St. Elizabeth Church is looking for a Part-Time Maintenance person. Approximately 25 hours per week. Duties include cleaning the Church and assisting with grounds and school buildings. If you are interested, please call the Church Office at 412-882-8744.

The Story of Father’s Day The first Father’s Day was observed on
June 19, 1910 in Spokane, Washington. The
idea was proposed by Mrs. John B. Dodd who
wanted a special day to honor her father,
William Smart. William was a Civil War
veteran who was widowed when his wife died
giving life to their sixth child. He raised his newborn and
the other five children by himself with great strength and
selflessness.
Around this time, folks in other cities began to celebrate
Father’s Day and the idea of a national Father’s Day was
supported by President Coolidge. Finally, in 1966,
President Lyndon B. Johnson signed a presidential
proclamation declaring the third Sunday of June as
Father’s Day.
Happy Father’s Day to all the strong, selfless, loving,
nurturing men who model and reflect God’s love for us!
The Father’s Day Remembrance leaflets are available on
the bulletin tables. Thank you to everyone who honored
their fathers and contributed to this special collection!

This event is truly an impressive demonstration of what a parish community can do. But, it also brings a LOT of people together for fun, food and fellowship: hard-working volunteers and those who came to eat; parishioners and visitors; families and individuals.
Special thanks to Gary Burcin who did SO MUCH behind-the-scenes work and each week making the whole event a success. THANK YOU to everyone who prepared the food, those who cooked it, those who assembled the meals (for dine-in and take-out) and all who donated such amazing desserts each week. Thanks also to everyone who donated beverages, as well as our youth who served as “runners”, taking food orders from the kitchen to our hungry patrons. THANK YOU to our cashiers, our hosts/hostesses, clean-up crew, our money counters and those from the other parishes in our grouping who helped us out. Last, but certainly not least, THANK YOU to those who make it all worthwhile ... YOU, as parishioners, family, friends, neighbors who visited the Fish-Fry and supported it! For My Father A Child's Prayer
Dear St. Joseph,
help my dad to be a good father. Help him when he is tired,
when he is worried, when he is in a hurry.
Give him pride in his work and a little more time to have fun.
Help me to show my dad how much I love him.
Amen.

Heavenly Father,
You entrusted you Son Jesus,
the child of Mary
to the care of Joseph, an earthly father.
Bless all fathers
as they care for their families.
Give them strength and wisdom,
tenderness and patience;
support them in the work they have to do,
protecting those who look to them,
as we look to you for love and salvation,
through Jesus Christ our rock and defender.
Amen
