Dear Parishioners,

Today throughout the world is World Mission Sunday. It is a day set

aside for Catholic Christians worldwide to recommit themselves to the

Church’s missionary activity through prayer and sacrifice. The theme

this year is “Do Good on Earth” taken from St. Therese of Lisieux,

Patroness of the Missions, and is a call to put faith in action. Our Holy

Father, Pope Francis, reflects this call when he asks each one of us to

“give voice to those not able to make their cries of pain and oppression heard.” Pope

Francis’ principal means of vital support for the 1,150 mission dioceses in the world

is through the Society of the Propagation of the Faith. World Mission Sunday, which is

an essential experience of worship, catechesis, and worldwide sacrifice, is a principal

means of funding for the Society of the Propagation of the Faith. In his message for

World Mission Sunday 2013, Pope Francis said, “The church… is not a relief

organization, an enterprise or an NGO, but a community of people, animated by the

Holy Spirit, who have lived and are living the wonder of the encounter with Jesus

Christ and want to share this experience of deep joy, the message of salvation that

the Lord gave us. It is the Holy Spirit that guides the Church in this path.” This

collection is part of our normal Sunday stewardship tithing, but if you would like to

give an extra gift just for the missions, there are envelopes on the buffet by the

bulletin board at St. Clement or in the vestibule at St. Rupert for this purpose.

Catholic Social Teaching – Who is blessed in the kingdom of God? Is it those who

make the cover of news magazines? Those who receive a Nobel Prize or an Academy

Award? Those with big salaries or advanced degrees? No. In the kingdom of God it is

the poorest, the littlest, the most forgotten who are truly blessed. And that’s why we

work to save their lives. Created, Redeemed, Loved by God, UCCB Respect Life, 2006

Congratulations to our Knights of Columbus on winning Overall Second Place in the

float division with a cash prize of $1,000.00 and also winning The President’s Trophy

in the parade last Saturday evening in the West Side Fall Festival. Way To Go !!

A sincere Thank You to all who made the Parishes Family Picnic so very enjoyable

last Sunday. Thanks to God for the absolutely beautiful weather; choir at Mass;

Activities Committee of Barbara Forehand, Becky Birchler, Pauletta Moen, Della

Livers; volleyball net and set-up, Dave Schnur; cornhole games from Chuck Carter

and Maurice Fleming; kids games, Tammy and Tanner Weisheit ; cooking the pork

steak Phil Lemond, Tom Coomes and I think a few others; all who brought tables and

tables of good food; all the people and businesses who donated items for the Chance

Raffles, Silent Auction and bingo; clean-up crew; all who came; and all I am probably

missing. It was an enjoyable day.

The Catholic Foundation asked us to publish this notice – Making a Gift Through an

IRA Charitable Rollover. Normally, a distribution from your IRA is taxed as ordinary

income. However, the Taxpayer Relief Act of 2012 included a provision for the IRA

Charitable Rollover that allows you to make a charitable gift directly from your IRA

while excluding the amount of that gift from your income for 2013. Individuals 70 1/2

or older, who are required to make an annual distribution from their IRA, may direct a

gift to a qualified charity, such as your parish. Such qualified direct distributions to a

charity from your IRA are not subject to income tax ($100,000 limit). Required

minimum distributions that you wish to count as a charitable contribution should be

sent directly to the charity before the end of 2013 to avoid any tax consequences of

this income. For more information about how you and your parish can benefit from an

IRA Charitable Rollover, contact the Catholic Foundation at 812-424-5536 or by

email at lcox@evdio,org or contact Father Will.

Restless Heart, the movie about the life of St. Augustine, will be shown yet today,

Sunday, October 20, 2013 at 1:00 PM and 4:00 PM at Showplace Cinemas East,

Evansville, IN.

Good Shepherd Prayer Apostolate – Thursday, October 24, starting at 6:00 AM

until Friday morning at 6:00 AM. Please come at your chosen hour. All others are

encouraged to spend some time in prayer in church. A beautiful quote from “Letters

To A Brother Priest” – “All the angels of heaven gaze at the image left on your soul

after each hour you make in the presence of Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament.”

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION PROGRAMS

* October 20th—Fall Break--No Rel. Ed.

R. E. Thanksgiving Food Drive to benefit

our Warrick Ecumenical Soup Kitchen:

October 20 - November 24. Please bring

In canned food/non-perishable food

items during religious education class.

The Ecumenical Soup Kitchen provides hot

meals for the needy in our community.

Your generosity will be greatly appreciated.

Urgent: We need immediate volunteers to

assist our kindergarten & preschool catechist

during religious education on Sundays from

8:45 am to 10:15 am. No teaching

required. Primary duties will be to assist

with craft making projects and monitoring

trips to the bathroom. Please get in touch

with the parish office or DRE if you can help.

Halloween: Each year, we hear that

Halloween is an ancient pagan festival that

was taken over by the Church or we hear

that it's a celebration of evil and witchcraft

and that Christians shouldn't take part in it.

However, from its earliest beginnings, this

holiday was linked to the feast of All Saints.

The word Halloween is a shortened form of

"All Hallows Eve," the day before All Saint's

Day. Hallow is the same word for "holy" that

we find in the Lord's Prayer, and e'en is a

contraction of "evening." Halloween and its

back-to-back feast days of All Saints and All

Souls offer us an opportunity to talk about

what it means to be holy. Whether or not

our children have ready access to candy &

other sweets during the year, Halloween is

still the kind of super-abundance of treats

that we might think of as a metaphor of

God's grace - free for the asking. While

autumn leaves, apple cider, pumpkins,

black cats, costumes and candy are likely

part of our Halloween fun; offering prayers

and remembrances at the graves of

deceased family members and friends and

attending Mass as a family will emphasize

the Catholic nature of the holiday. Teaching

children to understand the deeper

significance and connection of All Hallows

Eve to the Holy Day of Obligation on All

Saints Day and our devotion to our loved

ones on All Souls Day is a very important

responsibility that all parents, catechists,

clergy and fellow parishioners share.
