Easter (also called “Pascha” or some variant by most non - English speaking Christians) celebrates the resurrection of Jesus from the dead, and it is the greatest and oldest feast of the Church. Even the term “Pascha” is borrowed from the Jewish word for “Passover,” and Easter is calculated based on the lunar calendar (all other feasts are on the solar calendar). These facts show the ancient, Apostolic, origins of Easter. We even possess a baptismal liturgy of Easter dating to the mid - third century. Traditionally, the Pascha celebration began with a lengthy vigil, the “mother of all vigils” according to St. Augustine. The whole history of salvation is retold during the vigil, through scripture and liturgy. At the Easter Vigil, three traditions developed: the baptism of new converts, lighting of the paschal candle, and the blessing of the new fire (taken from the Jewish blessing of the lamp on the eve of the Sabbath). The new fire is used to light the Paschal candle. Eucharist is then celebrated, being also the first Eucharist of new

converts. The Church also celebrates the octave of Easter. These eight days are all solemnities. Actually, these days even take precedence over other solemnities that can fall

within the Octave of Easter, including the Annunciation. Easter follows Holy Week, and is the third and final day of the

Paschal Triduum, the three day period which began on the evening of Holy Thursday. The evening prayer of Easter Day officially ends the Triduum. The Triduum contains the heart of the Christian faith: Jesus’ death and resurrection. Easter is not just a day, but an entire fifty day season, called Eastertide, marked by joyful festivities and liturgical fullness. You might hear “Christ is Risen!” and “Alleluia!” frequently during the Easter season, because we are joyfully celebrating

Christ’s bodily resurrection. The Feast of the Ascension falls with Easter season. The 50 day season of Easter runs up to,

and includes, the Feast of Pentecost. On behalf of the Priests, Deacons, Sisters and Staff of St. Columba Church, we wish you a Blessed Easter!!!

We would like to thank all of the Ushers who volunteered their time to help in these celebrations. We were so pleased to have their assistance in keeping our Confirmandi and Sponsors out of the rain as well as seating the family members so that we were able to keep a clear path to the doorway.

God bless and thank you very much from all of us at the St. Columba Religious Education Office.

In the Symbolon program, explore how to fully live your Catholic faith. During each session, we’ll show a half hour DVD followed by a discussion. At the end of April, we will discuss Penance and Anointing of the Sick. Many people wonder, “Why should I confess my sins to a priest”? But behind the human priest we must see the true High Priest at work - Jesus Christ forgiving our sins in the Sacrament of Penance, the great sacrament of God’s Mercy. We will meet on Friday evenings in Rm 11. All are welcome! April 28: Penance and Anointing of the Sick June 2: Matrimony & Holy Order

25TH ANNIVERSARY NEWS

Our Church was, for many years, a Mission of St. Denis Parish. In 1992, John Cardinal O’Connor split the Parish of St. Denis and created the new Parish of St. Columba. We will celebrate our 25th Anniversary in 2017. Here are some of our plans: Dinner Dance Committee We are planning a 25th Anniversary Dance to be held at Cristo’s on Friday, October 27, 2017. Barbara Falcone is the Chair of this committee. We are also planning for a Dinner Dance Anniversary Journal. Church Restoration Committee Eric Winogradoff is the Chair of this committee. We are studying our church and preparing recommendations for repair and renewal. Father Michael and Eric recently met with Brian Baker, a Liturgical Consultant. His company has renewed many churches. Presently they are working on the Cathedral of Boston and St. Joseph’s Church in Millbrook. Soon we hope to present our ideas to the parish for discussion. Photo Journal We are working together with Lifetouch to create a 25th Anniversary Photo Journal. It will include pictures of our parish ministries and programs as well as an advertising section. We invite our parishioners to consider signing up for a photo session to be held in May & June. Photo sessions will be held in the school. Each family or individual will receive a free 8x10portrait and a free Photo Journal. Please sign up today at Member Site: https://booknow-lifetouch.appointment-plus.com/9r9s3j7v - Or click on the link at our website. After Easter, you will also have the opportunity to sign up after Masses. For more information, call the Parish Office. Chair of Lifetouch/Family Portrait Committee Cindy Slade: [email protected] This group will coordinate the family photo sessions that will take place May 30 - June 11 and June 15 - 21. Would you like to help Cindy? Send her email. Chair of Parish Group Photos Carolyn Torella [email protected] This group will take pictures of all parish groups/organizations in April & May as well as parish activities. All Parish Ministries such as Lector’s, EM’s, Musicians, Ushers, Greeters, Cantors, etc. Please reserve this date for your group photos: Saturday, June 3rd at 9:00am! Anniversary Mass We are waiting to see if Cardinal Dolan can provide us with a date for our Anniversary Mass. We will keep you posted! Capital Campaign Each parish in the Archdiocese of New York will participate in the “Renew and Rebuild” Campaign over the next

three years. Our Campaign will begin in June 2017. It will coincide with our 25th Anniversary. The Restoration Committee is working to develop projects for your consideration. Right now, plans include new windows for the school, new signage, new kneelers in the church and new flooring in the church.

I would like to thank you and the parishioners of St. Columba for their support of the baby bottle drive. Your generous gift of $1000 brighten an otherwise rainy day! Recently, we were in need of formula and diapers so I stopped by Acme. I purchased 2 cans of formula and a box of diapers at a cost of $64. The girl at the register said, “It’s expensive to raise a baby today”. This is why your gift is so important to the many women who have chosen life! We are able to provide the food, clothing and supplies they so desperately need. Our organization depends on the generosity of our donors, so thank you again. It’s wonderful to belong to such a caring and generous parish! Sincerely, Joan Doherty & Honey Jo Kelly (Volunteer) (Director)

Our Lady of Lourdes High School’s Theatre Company to Present Godspell

It is with great excitement and enthusiasm that Our Lady of Lourdes High School’s Theatre Company has chosen to present Godspell as their spring musical production. Based on the Gospel according to Matthew, Godspell is the first musical of composer Stephen Schwartz who went on to write such well-known hits as Wicked, Pippin, and Children of Eden. The show features a comedic troupe of eccentric players who team up with Jesus to teach his lessons in a new age through parables, games, and tomfoolery. Shows will take place April 27, 28 & 29 at 7 pm and April 30 at 2 pm. Address is 131 Boardman Road, Poughkeepsie. General Admission tickets are $12, seniors and students are $10.

Are lethal pills the most we can offer to our brothers and sisters who find themselves suffering with a terminal illness? Join us to learn the facts as we look at the legislation and its medical, legal, and ethical implications. Co-sponsored by the Family Life/Respect Life Office of the Archdiocese of NY and the Bishop Anthony Mestice Council if the Knight of Columbus.
