March 29, 2020 Fifth Sunday of Lent 3

FROM THE PASTOR'S DESK: FATHER PAUL CAOMarch 21, 2020

I have some difficult news to share with you. Governor Pritzker announced a mandatory shelter–in–place order for the State of Illinois. The order becomes effective March 21 at

5 PM. Unfortunately this means that effective at 5 PM today, St. Celestine and St. Cyprian Churches will be closed. There will be no access to the Churches, Chapels, School, or to any building on the parish campus. The parish offices will be closed until further notice.

Saturday confessions are cancelled. In addition to the suspension of all Masses, all funerals and weddings are postponed until the order is lifted. Sundays at 10:30 AM we will live–stream Mass on Facebook Live, and upload it to this website. If we cannot be together physically to pray, at least we can do so spiritually. If you have any prayer requests, please share them by emailing [email protected]. Father Brendan, Father Fil, Father Jeff and I will continue to say Mass privately and will keep your intentions, as well as the intentions for that day’s Mass, in our prayers.

This is not a time to despair nor to have our faith shaken. This is a time for us to join together in prayer and call upon Our Mother Mary, St. Mother Guerin, St. Cyprian, and St. Celestine and all the saints to pray for us. Let us turn with great faith to God and pray for an end to this pandemic and allow us to reopen our churches so that all may come for true healing, the Living Water, and the Bread of Life.

With the closing of our Churches, Cardinal Cupich has asked that we have the experience of being united in prayer, even when we are isolated. By pausing and lifting up in prayer all those affected by the pandemic, we can offer our support to those in need and let them know that they are not alone. The Cardinal is asking us to pray five times a day with the prayer being dedicated to a specific group particularly impacted by the pandemic. Our church bells will ring at those hours to remind us to show our solidarity in prayer.

The prayer intentions for each hour of prayer follow:

9 AM – Prayer for those infected with the virus and all who are ill.Lord, place your healing hand on those who suffer illness. Bring them to full health and ease their anxious hearts. May our prayer and the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary encourage them that they are not alone. We ask this in Jesus’ Name. AMEN!

Noon – Prayer for health care workers and those attending to the sick.Lord, we are ennobled by those who put their lives at risk in caring for the sick. Keep them safe and embolden them when they are weary. We ask this in Jesus’ Name. AMEN!

3 PM – Prayer for first responders and essential workers.Lord, we pray for those who run to danger and keep us safe and those who serve the common good. Embrace them with your mantle of protection and comfort the fears of their families. We ask this in Jesus’ name. AMEN!

6 PM – Prayer for people of every nation and their leaders.Lord, the pandemic opens our eyes to each other as brother and sisters in one human family. We pray

As the winter thaw begins, it’s time to plan our summer activities. All students are invited to join St. Mother Theodore Guerin Parish for a week–long Summer Catholic Youth Camp, Totus Tuus, June 28–July 3. The camp will be held at St. Celestine School. The week consists of learning about the Catholic faith in a fun way through small group activities such as presentations, songs, skits, and games. Additionally, daily Mass will be celebrated. Totus Tuus demonstrates that one can be a faithful Catholic and still have fun.

The camp for students in Grades 1–6 is Monday–Friday from 9 AM to 2:30 PM and Grades 7–12 Sunday–Thursday 7 to 9 PM.

The cost per family for the week is $50 for one child, $75 for 2 children, $100 for 3 children and $120 for 4 children. The evening teen program is $15 per child. You may register online at www.givecentral.org/TTChicago.

Please contact Ruthanne Swiatkowski, Director of Religious Education at t [email protected] if you have any questions.

Looking forward to many students joining this faith–filled, fun week!

for people of every nation and their leaders, asking that they be inspired to seek the good of all and quell the voices of division. We ask this in Jesus’ Name. AMEN!

9 PM – Prayer for those who have died today.Lord, we grieve the passing of our sisters and brothers who have died this day. We commend them to your tender mercy, confident that nothing, not even death, will separate us from your love. We ask this in Jesus’ Name. AMEN!

Giving TogetherCancellation of Mass is leading to significant losses in our offertory income, which is placing all our ministries and operations at significant risk. Please consider giving online at GiveCentral.org where you can make a weekly offertory contribution to our parish and keep the vital ministries and services we provide going. We ask you to prayerfully consider maintaining your regular weekly donation level or even increasing it during these times or consider giving online at the Archdiocesan website where you can make an offertory donation to our parish and keep the vital ministries and services we provide going. Please make sure to select ST. MOTHER THEODORE GUERIN from the drop–down menu on the form. If you prefer to make donation through cash or check, please drop the envelopes in the mailboxes at either of the St. Cyprian or St. Celestine offices.

I will keep you updated. The parish staff and I will uplift you in prayer each and every day. Pray for each other. United in faith, with our eyes fixed on the Cross, we can overcome this time of peril and be stronger in our faith and love for each other. Please watch the website, stguerinparish.org, and our Facebook page St. Mother Theodore Guerin Parish, for updates.

In prayer,

Fr Paul CaoPastor

GIVE GLORY TO GOD“Awake, O sleeper, and arise from the dead, and Christ will give you light” (Ephesians 5:14).

We are at the midpoint of our Lenten journey of conversion. As always, God never gives up on us, especially those who have “fallen asleep” along the road to conversion. The most

ST. POLYCARP“Eighty–six years I have served Christ, and he never did me any wrong. How can I blaspheme my King and Savior?” Boldly answering the official who demanded he worship pagan gods, Polycarp, today’s “Senior Citizen Saint,” demonstrates that courage, far from being the preserve of the young, is a virtue cultivated through lifelong fidelity and crowned by final perseverance.

A disciple of Saint John, who is said to have consecrated him bishop of Smyrna in modern–day Turkey, Polycarp witnesses to the truth that, whatever time and space may separate us, Jesus’ gift

of the Eucharist unites us. Polycarp’s final words, preserved by the Church of Smyrna, sound like a Eucharistic Prayer in which the saint offers himself: “Lord, almighty God, Father of your beloved and blessed Son Jesus Christ, through whom we have come to the knowledge of yourself . . . may I be received among the martyrs as a rich and pleasing sacrifice . . . through the eternal priest of heaven, Jesus Christ . . . through him be glory to you, together with him and the Holy Spirit, now and forever. Amen.”

powerful stories of conversion are proclaimed during these final weeks of Lent. They have the power to shake us out of our sleep. Today’s Gospel story of the healing of the man born blind exposes the real blindness in the time of Christ—the blindness of the self–righteous religious leaders. In a few weeks, at the Easter Vigil, the Church will

proclaim “Christ our Light” as the paschal candle is carried into darkened churches throughout the world. May the darkness of sin that still pervades our lives, communities, and world, be dispelled by the Christ who comes to bring sight to the blind and light to the world.

ON GETTING RID OF SOMETHING, AND GETTING SOMETHING BACKThis column is meant in no way to be an endorsement, particularly because I have never used the

services offered by either of the two companies I’m about to mention. That said, there’s a commercial running often on the radio

these days for 1–800–GOT–JUNK? Similarly, there are a lot of billboards throughout Chicagoland for Restore Hair. I had occasion to drive to Elk Grove Village the other day. Enroute, I heard one of the 1–800–GOT–JUNK? spots, and that’s when it hit me that their radio promos are as ubiquitous as the RestoreHair.com billboards of Brian Urlacher on the outbound Jane Addams. You can’t miss them even if you want to. Still, I give both ad agencies props for their advertisement content. The radio spots about the junk removal company are inviting

(perhaps they really do bring the springtime), and HairLacher? Breaking Bald? O’Hair Hairport? Pretty clever…

The dichotomy of the messages coming at us from the two companies is interesting. The junk removal company makes it sound easy and enticing to get rid of something. Their ads say they show up in like ninety minutes, and that they work until midnight. And the clincher for me is the pointing business. Their ads say that all the client has to do is point at the trash they want removed, and it’s gone. This is on the company’s website as well: “Just point and junk disappears!” I mean, how easy and enticing is that? And per some of the customer reviews published on the company’s website, “Awesome service” and “Will definitely use again” and “Quick, clean, as advertised.” Nice. But in obvious contrast to the junk removal company’s promise, the

hair restoration company makes it sound easy and enticing to…well…to get something that’s been lost, back.

All of which makes me think about the sacrament of Reconciliation. I can’t speak for anyone but me, of course, but I’ve got some junk I’d like to get rid of. Think guilt, remorse, self–recrimination. Fortunately, I have an easy and enticing way to do so. OK. This isn’t a perfect analogy, because I know that going to Confession can be hard. It can be hard being honest enough with ourselves to drag up shortcomings we’d just as soon leave buried. It can be harder still to admit these shortcomings to a priest. But if we remember that the priest is acting in persona Christi, and if we remember that Jesus himself wants to free us from that which keeps us bound [just as he does for Lazarus in today’s Gospel (“Untie him and let him go”)], then we know that all we really

have to do is point at our trash while professing to do better, and it’s gone. Like it was never even there in the first place! And as for getting something that’s been lost, back, have you listened to those words of absolution lately? To me, they are as peaceful, as loving, and as powerful of words we’ll ever hear. And all we have to do is point. Sort of. Hey. Work with me here.
