Worship in Our Parish

Twenty-third Sunday in Ordinary Time—09 September 2018 Deaf and dumb. Jesus enters foreign and hostile lands today and opens the deaf man’s ears and unties his tongue. Are we not at times deaf to the cries of

poverty and injustice? Are we not at times tongue tied to unkind, untruthful words and illegalities? Disciples of Christ - that is who we are because of Baptism - must listen for and then speak truth.

How will my goodness, because of God’s grace, let me go where the needy are?

To whom and to what must I open my ears and listen intently?

How can I speak truth to lies and injustice?

You’re invited to a day of gratitude thanking God for

all He has given you. You’ll recognize how special you are and how to use your uniqueness to offer your gifts back to the God who loves you. A keynote speaker, panel of experts, Catholic vendors, and your friends in faith will offer inspiration. For more info, contact Debbie Tatum, Director of Stewardship, [email protected] or 219.769.9292, ext. 268. Let’s celebrate our gifts to-gether!

September 9, 2018 Page 3 Twenty-Third Sunday of Ordinary Time

Dear Saint Edward Parish Family:

The readings for this Sunday show us God's concern for the disabled. How closely do we share in his concern for them? We're all disabled, one way or another. We can have eyes that see and still be blind. In fact, the scripture from James shows us just how blind we can be!

If we see only how a person dresses, for example, without seeing into their hearts to recognize their gifts and talents and unique reflection of God, then we are being judgmental. If we are more impressed by a person's wealth or title or college degrees than we are by his/her spiritual energy or insights or willingness to serve, then we are being judgmental.

Only God can see all the good that's in a person's heart, and yet we make assumptions about others as if we're equal to God. Only God can hear the motives and longings behind a person's words, and yet we quickly judge what is being said as if we know exactly what is meant.

Judgmentalism shows us nothing more than how truly blind we are. Jesus wants to say to each of us: "Ephphatha! May your eyes and ears and mind be opened to the truth!" However, so that we can receive this healing, we have to slow down and stop reacting to what's visible and audible. We cannot trust what we see and hear. We need to take time to prayerfully pause for wisdom and discernment and new discoveries.

This is one of the reasons why Jesus gave us his Holy Spirit. When we let God's Spirit interpret everything for us, instead of reacting, we will act the way the Lord wants us to. Instead of reacting to partial information, we will act with faith and compassion.

May God Bless & Keep You Always!

Fr. Rick

SEE BEYOND OUTWARD APPEARANCES The phrase “Sunday best” has lost much of its meaning in our society today. Some lament the loss of people dressing up for church on Sunday; others think it’s a healthy sign that we’re as casual in attire gathered before the Lord as we are elsewhere. No matter which school of thought on this topic we belong to, James would probably chastise us. In either case, we are still focused on external appear-ance, mistaking it for some sort of favored position before God. True, James criti-cizes the community that favors the rich and well-dressed while ostracizing the poorly clothed, but even more he criticizes the making of distinctions, making choices based on criteria that having nothing to do with the reign of God. James might turn our attention to the reign of God described by Isaiah, in which people are healed and the earth becomes ripe to bear fruit. Jesus today is focused on this reign of God, healing a Gentile man in a region hostile to his Jewish faith, not mindful of the man’s origins or clothing or status or ability to repay. Isaiah, James, and Jesus in Mark’s Gospel all call us to look more deeply to find where the will of God needs to be done, and has been done, on earth as in heaven. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

—Fray Gilberto Cavazos-Glz, OFM, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc. September 9, 2018 Page 5 Twenty-Third Sunday of Ordinary Time

Hello Dear Friends, Thank you to everyone who helped last weekend to make the parish’s Labor Day float possible. Thank you to all who donated candy and water (we needed it on a hot day!). Thank you to all who helped decorate the float Monday morning. Thank you to all who joined us on the float to pass out candy and flyers. And thank you to all who cheered us on as we went through the town. It was a great day! As I was walking down Commercial with the float, I couldn’t help but think about how this is how our faith should be lived. We should share our faith out in the open. We should share our faith with others. We should also be joyful in our faith! It was so much fun seeing the kids on the float excitedly throw candy to the crowd. What if we had that much joy when we shared our faith with others? Being in the parade also reminded us that we are part of a larger community. Our parish home isn’t on an island far away from others, but rather it is part of a community brought together by a common zip code. I was thankful for the hundreds of smiling faces we saw as we made our way down the parade route. Some of them I knew. Some of them were you, dear parishioners! But some of them were just Lowellians happy to see us in the parade. And last, the parade reminded us that we need to be brave in our faith. Father Rick surprised us by showing up to the parade with a very large picture of Jesus with the words “He loves you!” on the bottom of the picture. Father carried that picture all the way down the parade route as a reminder to those who saw it what is at the heart of our faith. How many of us would have done that? It takes a lot of courage to do that. Thank you all, once again for supporting your parish home! Keep Monday, September 2, 2019 open: That’s next year’s Labor Day! We hope you can join us once again! Peace and all goodness, Vicky Hathaway
