Second Sunday of Advent Page 2
Traces of Grace Dear Fellow Parishioners; The Scriptures for the Second Sunday of Advent point to God's working out Salvation History in our midst. Something is happening around us. The city of Jerusalem stands as a sign to the Israelites that God is in their midst. John the Baptist calls out that redemption is at hand. We still need signs and symbols of God working in our midst. Perhaps more now than ever! Com-munities were historically built around Cathedrals and churches. They were symbolically at least for townsfolk and travelers that God was at the center of things. In our western world, it gradually became the factory, then the bank building, and now perhaps it is the handheld computer! For us who still hunger for God's presence, our parish church is usually seen as a center place for us to worship, to meditate, to be drawn into something more profound than our day to day anxieties. For Catholics, we also have an understanding that we are more than just a local church that we belong to a Universal Church. A Cathedral church represents this truth and throughout our Catholic his-tory, the center of the local church has been a Cathedral. As the bishop's church it is signified by the "chair" or "cathedra". As the tenth largest diocese, in the United States, our diocese has been given a gift and an amazing opportunity to create a new Catholic Cathedral complex in the center of Orange County. A bit of background to the recent purchase of the Crystal Cathedral follows:
*Our current Holy Family Cathedral was never meant to be a Cathedral Church. When our Diocese formed 35 years ago, it was chosen because it was centrally located and large enough for a county still full of orange trees and strawberry fields. As our county and diocese has grown, an 800 seat church (smaller than St. Edward's) is totally inadequate for diocesan worship. *A bit over 10 years ago, Bishop Brown purchased a 15 acre site near Metro Pointe behind South Coast Plaza from the Segerstrom Company with the intention of establishing a Cathedral site. It was quickly established as a parish and currently has temporary buildings on the site. Pre-liminary plans were drawn up for a Cathedral as well as adjacent buildings with the price tag of $150,000,000 to $200,000,000. Gulp! *Last year, when the pending bankruptcy of the Crystal Cathedral Ministries became public, Bishop Brown inquired into the possibility purchasing the 35 acre facility. Honestly, we did not think we had a chance at purchasing this incredible site. But our $57,000,000 bid was accepted by the courts and the Crystal Cathedral Ministries and late last year our diocese became the owner of one of the most significant religious sites in the United States. We now have the opportunity of having a Cathedral at much lower price tag than what we originally had imagined at the Segerstrom site. *Of course, to transition ownership and day to day operations of this magnitude is no easy or sim-ple task. Committees have been formed and agreements have been formed to allow the remnants of the Crystal Cathedral ministries to transition out of the campus and for us to begin to transform it. Several of our parishioners have been actively involved in this project and are excited by the possi-bilities of what we can do with this campus. Part of the transforming project is to be able to recre-ate the interior of the current church into a Catholic worship space. While the name has been changed from Crystal to Christ Cathedral, it will take more than a name change to parish.

Continued from page 2: If you have never been inside the current church and only seen it from the freeway, you need to stop by and take a look at the site. We will be sponsoring another tour soon from our parish. There are 7 significant buildings on the campus site including offices, a school, as well as a wel-come center. We have a tremendous opportunity to advance our Catholic causes with this new Cathedral Campus site. Monday, December 10, at the UCI Bren Center, will see our new bishop, Kevin Vann become our fourth bishop of Orange. With his installation, we will have a new leader to guide us as we go forward with our Diocesan Campaign. Bishop Brown, who is retiring, will remain with us in our Diocese living at the current Holy Family Cathedral in Orange. I am thankful for his many years of service to the Church of Orange and I look forward to serving with Bishop Vann as he becomes our new shepherd. Next week, I will share with you more about the Campaign details. Together in Christ; Fr. Steve Pastor

cember 15 at 7:00 PM in the Church featuring our Adult Choir, Morningtide (Sunday 9:00 AM Quartet), Chorister Youth Choir, Cherub Chil-dren’s Choir, and orchestra. THE GIVING TREE
We are once again approaching the glorious cele-bration of Christ-mas. We are happy to an-nounce our twen-tieth annual Giv-ing Tree which will be in the Church, starting at the 5:30 P.M.
Mass on December 1st. The envelopes on the Tree to the left as you enter church are for needy families with children, the number on the envelope indicates the number in the family. Gift cards such as Visa, Wal-Mart, Target or department stores are always much appreci-ated. More helpful information is inside the en-velope. Please drop your envelopes off in the Church Office Donation box. The tree on the right with the lovely decorated envelopes is for donations of cash or check which will be used to provide food and necessi-ties to needy families throughout the entire year. You may also drop these envelopes off in the Church office donation box. There will also be a Toy Bin in the Church throughout the Advent Season. All toys should be new or hand crafted and left unwrapped. The Giving Tree can be one way this Christmas for you and your family to glorify the Lord and if helping a family this year will enrich your Christ-mas, this is the perfect opportunity.
May God Bless and Keep you, Christian Service and St. Vincent de Paul
