GODFREY CAMBRIDGE ( Gordon Miller) Laughter is Godfrey Cambridge's business and his pleasure. His working motto is "Laugh to keep from crying" and it works. He's kept audiences from crying with a wide range of successful show business activities, including motion pictures, theatre, television appearances and night club dates.
His movies include "Cotton Comes To Harlem," "The Watermelon Man," "Biscuit Eater," and "Come Back, Charleston Blue." He's
guested on every television show from "Sesame Street'' to "Police Story," and as a stand-up comic he's played the Desert Inn in Las Vegas, Mr. Kelly's in Chicago, The Century Plaza in Los Angeles, and most recently, The Cellar Door in Washington, D.C.
Godfrey MacArthur Cambridge was born in New York City. He migrated from British Guiana to Nova Scotia and eventually back to New York. Mr. Cambridge graduated from Flushing High School in Queens , New York and also studied at the College of the City of New York. Mr. Cambridge began work in Broadway and numerous odd jobs to help him up the ladder of success.
He is currently involved in continuing succession of more starring roles in films and television.
It is with the greatest pleasure we welcome Godfrey Cambridge to the Mary Moody Northen Stage and St. Edward's University.
EDWARD MANGUM, Director of Theatre at St. Edward's University, has founded three theatres during his almost forty years in the profession, the Mary Moody Northen Theatre being his third. The director worked closely with San Antonio architect Alvin Julian in the planning, concept and design of the Northen Theatre, borrowing much from the now famous Arena Stage in Washington, D.C., which Mangum founded in 1950 and for which he drew the original design. Now finishing his tenth year at St. Edward's, he helped establish the theatre major here which has grown from fewer than twenty students four years ago to its current one hundred ten. The theatre program at St. Edward's is the only one of its kind in the country in which
major stars of film, television and stage appear in every major production. Mangum directed "Caligula" with Leonard Nimoy, "The Sudden and
Accidental Re-education of Horse Johnson" with Bill Macy and Samantha Harper, "The Time of Your Life" with John Saxon, "The Rainmaker" with Peter Breck and other shows at St. Edward's with Frank Sutton, William Shatner, Mercedes Mccambridge, Jackie Coogan, Lyle Talbot, Carl Betz, Johnathan Harris and Pernell Roberts, with whom he joined Actors Equity in 1951 when both were at the Arena Stage. Among the over three hundred plays he has produced, he has also directed Linda Darnell, Pat O'Brien, Gary Collins, George Grizzard, Roy Poole, John Beal, Kam Fong, John Carradine and Zelda Fi chandler, the present producing director of Arena stage, who succeeded Mangum as head of that theatre when he left at the end of two years to head a major theatre in Honolulu, Hawaii.
A writer of articles for many theatre publications, and a man singled out for his work by the authors of at least two ·recent volumes on the history of the American theatre, he holds a master's degree from The Catholic University of America where he studed under Walter Kerr, drama critic of "The New York Times," the Reverend Gilbert V. Hartke, O.P., founder of the theatre program at Catholic University, and Alan Schneider, famous director of the plays of Edward Albee. For four years, he was a consultant with the American National Theatre and Academy in New York City, from which office he helped establish the first U.S. Overseas Cultural Exchange Program throughout the Far and Middle East. He has directed in the state theatres of Germany and Turkey, lectured in India and Japan, and has launched the careers of many current actors, playwrights and theatre technicians in films, television and on the stage throughout America.

Robin Ann Carter ( Christin e Marlow e) is a soph omore Th eatr e Arts major from M adison, N ew J er sey. She is making her stage debut on the North en stage. Miss Carter has wor ked with Eileen Heckart , Leif Eri ckson, Mercedes McCambridge, and Greg M orris. Sh e also worked this summer at the Point Theatre in Ingram, Texas.
Rick Caraballada (Leo Davis ) is a sophomore Theatre Arts major from Buffalo, N ew York. He has worked at the Buffal o Theatre Workshop in New York and Lockport 's K enan Center. Mr. Caraballada has worked with Leif Erickson , Mercedes McCambridge, G reg Morris, Donny Most , Stubby Kaye and Al Lewis . He has studied voice with James D eiotte of the Chicago Sy:nphony Chorale and was a member of the National Thespian Society in 1972.
Emily Kelley (Hilda Manney) is a sophomore Th eatre Arts major at St. Edward's University. She has worked with Leif Erickson, Mercedes McCambridge and Greg Morris. She appear ed as 'Bessie Watty' in "The Corn Is Green " with Eileen Heckart and worked with the Point Theatre this summer. She won best actress at the University Interscholastice League One Act Play Contest .
Peter O'Rourke ( Gregory Wagner) has recently joined the St. Edward's University Theatre faculty as our Technical Director. He has worked with the Montana Repertory Theatre, and in New York where he operated his own summer stock theatres, directing and producing over forty productions. On the west coast , Mr. O'Rourke designed for the Seattle Repertory and worked with ABC and CBS Television. He has toured nationally with James Whitmore in "Will Rogers, U.S.A." and has also completed a lecture tour with TV personality Dick Cavett . A graduate of California University at San Francisco and Fresno, Mr . O'Rourke has previously taught at Arizona State University. We welcome Mr. O'Rourke with great pleasure to the St. Edward 's Theatre faculty and stage.
Johnny Lopez (Stand-In for Mr. Cambridge and House D etective) was last seen on the Northen sta ge in "The Cave Dwellers " with Al L ewis. He was stand-in for Mr. Morris, Bill Macy , Lyle Talbot , Pernell Roberts and Al Lewis . Mr. Lupez has appeared with Pat O 'Brien , Mercedes Mc-Cambridge , John Saxon, Leonard Nimoy, Stefanie Powers, Ed Nelson and Sal Minco.

A Unique Experience
St. Edward's is the only university in the United States which offers students
professional theatre on campus with top professional actors from television,
stage and film.
No other university in the country offers its students the professional theatre
program St. Edward's University does, and the coming season will add even
more luster to the program.
During the past four and one half years, St. Edward's students majoring in
Theatre Arts have had an opportunity to work with guest stars such as Mer
cedes McCambridge, John Saxon, Pat O'Brien, Pernell Roberts, William Shat
ner, Leonard Nimoy, Stefanie Powers, Julie Adams, Carl Betz, Peter Breck,
Jackie Coogan, Frank Sutton, Bill Macy, Sal Mineo, Ed Nelson, Eileen Heck
art, Leif Erickson, Greg Morris, Donny Most, Stubby Kaye, and Al Lewis.
The Theatre Arts teaching staff at St. Edwards feels this sort of exposure to
professionals offers invaluable learning experience for students. The staff
works on the premise that theatre departments can no longer afford to graduate
amateurs. St. Edward's is in the forefront of .training professionals and it ex
pects to stay there.

The FIRST NIGHTERS is an organization formed to promote and support further development of the Theatre Arts Program at St. Edward's University. As members of this unique organization, FIRST NIGHTERS have an opportunity to attend events with the "star performers" during their stay in Austin, and to participate in exclusive opening night festivities for every production. The cost of membership is $50 per person (or seat). Proceeds raised will assist the University in bringing to campus the highest quality professional actors and actresses.
