The Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ

Corpus Christi, the Body and Blood of Christ, is a feast day that honors God’s greatest gift to us. This is the universal feast that began in the year 1264, in the city of Liege in Belgium, when a priest of that diocese was elected and became Pope Urban IV.

Throughout the Church’s history, there’s always been a devotion to the Blessed Sacrament. The feast day of the Body and Blood of Christ may have started officially in 1264, but the reality of the bread and wine being substantially changed into the body and blood of Jesus, comes directly from our Lord’s command, “This is my Body, this is my Blood, do this in memory of me.” In the Eucharist, Jesus is really, truly, substantially, and abidingly present together with His Soul and Divinity for the nourishment of the faithful. Our belief in the Real Presence is the reason we will have a procession around the church after the 11:30 a.m. Mass this weekend.

Our belief in the Real Presence is also the reason we genuflect in front of the tabernacle. Of course, because of health reasons, it may be physically impossible for some people to genuflect. In these instances, a bow of reverence should be done in place of genuflection. What we must not do is ignore the tabernacle which contains the Real Presence of Christ. We must not walk right by the tabernacle without showing any reverence or acknowledgment. Often, at a wedding or a funeral, I see this take place. I believe the reason some catholics fail to acknowledge Our Lord in the tabernacle could be a result of poor spiritual formation, a lack of weekly Sunday worship, or even a lack of faith. We must pray for these brothers and sisters who have neglected their faith. Through our example, through catechesis, and through prayer, may those who question their faith be strengthened.

The feast of Corpus Christi is a feast of respect and love for the Body of Christ in the Eucharist, in ourselves, and in our brothers and sisters. Yours in Christ,

FED BY THE LORD Jesus’ words “This is my body” and “This cup is the new covenant in my blood” were only part of his table blessing. Jesus twice said: “Do this in remembrance of me” (1 Corinthians 11:24, 25). This is the good news of today’s solemnity. Like the five thousand hungry souls, we are fed by our Lord. This is not food that satisfies for only a short time, until the next meal. It is food that lasts and changes us. It is food for sharing in much the same way as Melchizedek did when he brought bread and wine to the returning Abraham. As children of God’s reign, we are blessed to be able to receive and share God’s gift. And we do so in the way most appropriate to our state in life—as parents, children, husbands, wives, or religious. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

Prayer with Scripture We invite you to an encounter of prayer where you can stop from the hurry of the moment and listen to God through God’s Word, in silence, meditation, ad-oration and contemplation. In this short but intense time, we listen to a talk that introduces us into the understanding of the Word of God, which later, we reflect on and meditate in an attitude of faith, discov-ering what God is trying to reveal to us. The prayer is accompanied by the exposition of the Blessed Sacrament with songs to help the faithful enter more into prayer.

PEOPLE OF THE CROSS UNITED Maldives is an island country that lies southwest of India. It is the only country that requires all citizens to be Muslim. Authorities exert extreme control on the people to correct any deviation from Islam. The small number of Christians living there cannot practice their faith openly for fear of arrest. Possession of any Christian material will place a Maldivian in jail. No Bible has been translated into the Dhivehi language except for portions of a few books. Pray that in spite of severe restrictions and oppression, the Christian Maldivians will continue in their faith and trust Jesus.

Participation in Labels for Education has declined in the past years. So, after 42 years, Campbell has come to the very difficult decision to discontinue the Labels For Education program. St. Eugene School will continue to collect the soup labels through the month of May. Thank you to the many parishioners who have clipped the labels and donated them to the school!

The Women’s Centers of Greater Chicagoland

Rev. George Koeune St. Eugene Dear Father Koeune, We would like to express our gratitude to you, the staff, and the parishioners of St. Eugene for participating in the 2016 Baby Bottle Project for The Women’s Center. The total collected in this year’s campaign came to $5,536.73! This is fantastic and we are truly grateful for everyone’s generous support. The Baby Bottle Project is our primary fundraiser and enables us to continue our efforts of saving moms and their babies from the tragedy of abortion. We are able to provide women with counseling, material goods assistance, pregnancy testing, ultrasounds and more. All of our services are free of charge! To date, The Women’s Center has saved over 39,000 babies and this has been made possible because we have been blessed with the support of so many wonderful souls like you and everyone involved from your parish. Thanks to you, we will continue in our efforts to promote a culture of life. Hopefully, with your prayers and assistance, we will see and end to abortion in our lifetime! God bless you. Sincerely, Mary A. Strom Ann Dorrian Executive Director Project Manager

OUR PATRON, POPE ST. EUGENE I

HIS FEAST DAY IS JUNE 2

Pope St. Eugene I

The feast day of our Patron Saint is commemorated in the Roman martyrology on June 2, the day of

his burial at St. Peter’s. It is good to honor St. Eugene. His pontificate was very brief, from August 10, 654 to June 2, 657, but he accomplished a lot during that short time. He was a gentle and holy man who showed great charity to the poor. He was a great defender of the theological truth that Christ is one person with two complete and distinct natures: a divine nature consubstantial with the Father, and a human nature consubstantial with us. Pope St. Eugene I is a great Saint to call upon for intercession if you find yourself confronted with heresy.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Once the early Christians realized that Christ’s coming in glory was delayed, there was a need to provide for the governance and everyday needs of the church. The various “orders” within the church carried forward the apostles’ ministry, but also allowed for a measure of creativity. The sacrament we call “holy orders” evolved somewhat slowly. At first, it made sense for Christians to use the forms they knew, adapting them to new situations. Synagogues, for example, were administered by a board of “elders,” translated into Greek as presbyteros. We know from the Acts of the Apostles that a system of presbyters was a normal feature of church life from earliest days. They stood in relationship to another order, that of “overseers,” translated into Greek as episkopos, giving us the English “bishops.” The bishop was the shepherd, the faithful tender of the flock, one who offered the Eucharist, forgave sins, and maintained the bond of charity. Just as the deacons were the chief advisers for the charitable life of the church, so were the presbyters meant to advise the bishop on the spiritual life of the faithful. They were trusted advisers at first, not pastors or priests as we understand those terms today. —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

OUR MISSION STATEMENT

Our mission as Catholics united in faith at St. Eugene Parish is to help bring God to people and people to God. Through evangelization, education and being of service to each other, we strive to make our parish community a holistic community in body, mind and spirit. It is our goal to develop, support, encourage and empower one another in our parish ministries, so that each person can reach their human and Christian po-tential. We are enthused about the future of St. Eugene and the whole Catholic Church and we pledge our participation in that future. We seek dialogue and open communication with all parishioners in fulfilling the needs of our parish. While recognizing the cultural diversities in our community, we will strive to bring all people together in Christ under a common bond of faith, hope and love.
