Summer Mission Appeal

On the weekend of July 29/30 we will welcome our summer missionary speaker. This year we are honored to have the Most Rev. Antonisamy Francis, the Bishop of the diocese of Kumbakonam. The diocese has an area of 7823 sq. km. and is situated in Tamil Nadu, South India. The Catholic population is more than two million faithful and is served by 200 diocesan and 73 religious priests, 568 nuns, and 15 trained lay catechists.

The diocese has set some goals to meet the growing pastoral needs. They hope to establish 12 more new parishes, provide better facilities for 126 Catholic schools, and purchase some much needed catechetical materials. Unfortunately, the people in the area are quite poor and are unable to support the church for such pressing pastoral projects.

Currently, there are 505 nuns and 3155 catholic teachers in charge of catechetical, educational, medical, and social ministries throughout the diocese. Since education is a main means of evangelization, the diocese has to provide buildings and infrastructure for the schools in remote villages, while the government would pay most of the teachers. Education of 2000 very poor or orphan children from remote villages every year and providing them with free board and lodgings, is extremely costly. All of the mission projects are 80% dependent on the Mission Cooperative Appeal to meet their needs. Please be generous with our second collection on July 29/30 to support the evangelization efforts of the diocese of Kumbakonam. I want to thank you in advance for helping with our summer mission appeal.

Yours in Christ,

THE MERCY, POWER, AND LOVE OF GOD The first reading today, from the book of Wisdom, makes its point over and over, at least five times in five verses! God is mighty, but lenient to all. God’s power is shown in kindness and clemency, not in harshness and condemnation, and those who govern God’s people must govern in the same way, with kindness. This loving kindness and gentleness is not contrary to God’s might, but is a direct result of God’s primacy over all. Who are we, then, to judge what is in the hearts of our fellow Christians and all people, when God commands justice with love and clemency? Likewise, the Holy Spirit makes up for our ignorance of what we need, speaking in a language we do not yet understand. But God knows our needs before we do, understands the intercessions of the Spirit, and helps us in our weakness. This is our hope: God’s mercy, power, and love. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

Prayer with Scripture

We invite you to an encounter of prayer where you can stop from the hurry of the moment and listen to God through God’s Word, in silence, meditation, ad-oration and contemplation. In this short but intense time, we listen to a talk that introduces us into the understanding of the Word of God, which later, we reflect on and meditate in an attitude of faith, discov-ering what God is trying to reveal to us. The prayer is accompanied by the exposition of the Blessed Sacrament with songs to help the faithful enter more into prayer.

Native American people and their culture. On Saturday night, July 29th, we will begin the evening at our Saturday 5:30 Mass.

Our music director, Lydia Hilado, will be joined by a Native flutist, Bill Bucholtz. After Mass, Father George (who is part Blackfoot Indian) will lead a procession to the

St. Kateri Altar at the Shaunessy Center. Prayers and rituals to our first Native American Saint, Kateri Tekakwitha, will be followed by

JUDITH & ROBERT REPIN 53 YEARS

NEW EUCHARISTIC MINISTERS Would you like to be a Eucharistic Minister at the week-end Masses at St. Eugene? You must be a parishioner of the parish and have made your confirmation. There would be one class for you to attend before being mandated. If you are interested, please call the rectory and leave your name and phone number. Someone from the rectory will return your call.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION For centuries, the only Eucharistic Prayer we heard as Western Catholics was the old Roman Canon, usually recited in a low voice by the priest, in Latin. By the 1940s, many Catholics were learning to follow along with the actions of the priest by means of a bilingual missal, with Latin on one side and English on the other. Drawings of the priest’s position at the altar, moving from one side to the other, or bowing or standing with uplifted hands at the center, helped the readers stay on track. The Roman Canon is a long prayer, and since it was done every day for every occasion, priests had a way of galloping through it. Even though long, its structure is fairly simple, with the consecration and sacrifice clearly marked out. Sadly, this surviving prayer had triumphed over many treasures of our tradition that emphasized other dimensions of Eucharist. The Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy in 1963 did not call directly for new Eucharistic Prayers, but that direction was inevitable. Discussion began almost immediately, and by 1967 the Vatican approved three new Eucharistic Prayers. In 1974, the Congregation for Worship unveiled the experiment of two Eucharistic Prayers for Masses of Reconciliation, and three for Masses with Children. At last, a period of creativity and enrichment had begun. —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

DRESS APPROPRIATELY FOR MASS As warm weather is here, we would like to remind everyone that Sunday Mass is the most im-portant and solemn event of the week. It is not an “informal occasion.” As a consequence, the appro-priate attire for Mass should be characterized by modesty, dignity, and elegance. Clothing suitable for a picnic, or for the beach, can indicate a lack of respect for the Eucharistic Sacrifice.

OUR MISSION STATEMENT

Our mission as Catholics united in faith at St. Eugene Parish is to help bring God to people and people to God. Through evangelization, education and being of service to each other, we strive to make our parish community a holistic community in body, mind and spirit. It is our goal to develop, support, encourage and empower one another in our parish ministries, so that each person can reach their human and Christian po-tential. We are enthused about the future of St. Eugene and the whole Catholic Church and we pledge our participation in that future. We seek dialogue and open communication with all parishioners in fulfilling the needs of our parish. While recognizing the cultural diversities in our community, we will strive to bring all people together in Christ under a common bond of faith, hope and love.
