MARCH 17th, 2019 Second Sunday of Lent Last month featured the annual Oscars’ show, and millions of movie fans sat in front of their TVs for a look-see at their favorite stars. They knew the faces and the names better than I for sure. They chose their favorites for the winners. But there were other unseen people, hidden in plain sight among the thea-ter audience, whose names and faces they did not know. They are the various artists who create the illusion that what we watch on the screen is real. Among them is an even smaller group in charge of makeup. With paints and padding, wigs and wrinkles, they manage to transform the famous actors into their characters. I believe all this effort aids the ac-tors to get into character for their award-winning performances. The transfiguration of Jesus was a far cry from such illusions. Peter, James and John truly saw what hap-pened when Jesus pulled back the veil of His earthly appearance enough to leave them “dazzled,” as St. Luke writes. Realists to their core, the three observ-ers felt their jaws slacken. Like me, you may wonder why Jesus did not do this sort of thing more often. It would have been so con-vincing to the skeptics among the crowds that fol-lowed Him that they would have dropped their oppo-sition. But Jesus decided differently. When His com-mands and demands became too much, they left. Just as a lot of Catholics do today. But as I thought about it some more, what the good Lord did with His miracles was to offer a compli-ment to us, specifically to our powers of deduc-tion. Watching things like that widow’s son climb out of his coffin; or that paralyzed man suddenly rise to take up his mat, not to omit that walk Jesus took on the water amid a raging storm. All of that calls forth a conclusion that is inescapable if not awfully hard to deny. Lest we fail to make the connection, the Church this weekend offers us the thought of St. Paul. Here he writes to his Philippian converts and to us that we too will be changed to conform with Jesus’ “glorified body.” Since this would have been his feastday, I’ll honor “great and glorious St. Patrick” as someone who would believe this to his core In the opening scenes of the musical “Camelot,” we see King Arthur standing in a field dressed in the clothes of a common peasant. To look at him you would have no idea that he was king. In fact, when Guinevere first met Arthur, she didn’t have a clue that he was king over all Camelot. Arthur was, in fact, king, but his appearance gave no evidence of this fact. Sound familiar?
