Our Father who art in heaven I am a father on earth.

You have given me this gift and responsibility.

Grant me the wisdom to carry it out.

Let my fatherhood be one of encouragement and support,

not of expectations and control.

Let me protect my children, but not too much;

Advise them, but just a little. Let me respect them as

individuals, not as extensions of myself.

Let me be honest about my feelings toward them-including my anger,

disappointment, hurt, excitement, joy and love. Let me be firm without

dominating them. Let me be there for them

when they need me and get out of the way when they

don’t. Let me offer them the roots of belonging and the wings

of freedom. Help me Father in heaven,

to be a father on earth.

“Greet one another

with a holy kiss.” For ten year-olds it was not logical. It was something that we had done all our lives and it was part of our nightly routine – kissing Mom and Dad goodnight. For some reason, Dad felt that we had come of age, “OK boys, your becoming young men now, so from now on we'll shake hands before you go to sleep.” My twin brother and I looked at each other with rather quizzicle looks that said, “What does being a man have to do with kissing our Dad goodnight?” The next evening, ready for bed, we ran down the stairs, gave Mom a kiss and a hug and went to Dad. He stuck out his hand to us, “Goodnight boys!” We stopped and looked at each other and then at him. Not with cheerful voices, we stuck out our hands and, “Good night Dad!” and went off to bed. Getting into the sack we discussed the matter. “Weird!” “Doesn't feel right!” “I can't sleep!” “Let's go!” Out of bed, down the stairs we went. Mom looked over at us, Dad said, “What is it boys?” Over to Dad we went, each of us giving a hug and a kiss to him. Mom smiled. Dad said, “Well, OK … last time!” Satisfied, we were back off to bed. “What about tomorrow?” we thought. It was Christmas Eve, thirteen years later, that I decided it had been long enough – “NO MORE HANDSHAKES!!!” I said to myself. Carrying presents to the door, Dad opened the door, “Merry Christmas, Phil!” he said, as he stuck out his hand. “Not tonight, not anymore!” I said. Coming into the house, I put all my gifts on the floor, faced Dad and gave him a great hug and a kiss on the cheek. Mom smiled. Dad didn't let go. He looked at me with a tear in his eye and smiled, too. That Christmas Eve each one of my brothers got a great hug as they came into the house. They looked surprised, but gladly returned it. Forget John Wayne, that night changed us forever – with Dad, with each other, with our nephews and in-laws. . St. Paul says, “Greet one another with a holy kiss.” Who am I to argue with St. Paul? Hugs and holy kisses to all you fathers, out there, and to everyone else, follow St. Paul's lead. Fr. Phil

RELIGIOUS FORMATION NEWS

The New Digs ~ A Look into our First Year in the McCabe Center

NURSERY NEWS: Sunday, June 29 will be the last day that nursery will be offered for the summer months. Nursery will not be offered during the

months of July and August. It will resume again the first Sunday after Labor Day, September 7. Thank you to all of our wonderful nursery volunteers: Beth Adamski, our wonderful Nursery Coordinator, Pat Egler, Arthenia & Lily Ferkany, Mandy Fouchea, Nicole Morea, Caleb Muskovin, Kristin Olzark, Danica Rutz, Mandy Seiferlein, Lisa Serene, Megan Spring, and Kelly Stone .

Last October began a frenzied move for our Religious Formation and Youth Ministry programs. We were finally (after years and years of living out of boxes in anticipation of moving out of Wilma Hall and into ‘The School’) given the all clear to make the big move. It was with a little bit of sadness that we said ‘goodbye’ to our home of many years at Wilma Hall (the kids swore that Sr. Wilma still paid visits to that building!) and with a lot of excitement that we said ‘hello’ to our new rooms in the new facility. Early on, the youth were given the task to name the large youth group room and the smaller game room in the new facility. After learning about the lives of several inspirational young saints, the Middle Schoolers named the activity room after St. Bernadette and the High Schoolers named the youth group room after St. Philomena. I encourage you to do a little research on these saints if you aren’t already familiar with them. They serve as great patrons for our youth! It didn’t take long for us to get acclimated to our newly renovated space. We were able to select some bright accent colors to reflect the liveliness of our groups, and the newly received couches from St. Lazare’s retreat house gave a youthful comfort to our rooms. We purchased a new, mobile projector screen which we use weekly to watch video clips or movies, and are able to take with us on retreat, and hope to show an outdoor movie on this summer! Our youth library has been growing (in fact we may need another set of bookshelves). We have religious and inspirational books for the youth that they can borrow anytime. This comes in handy especially for the 8th graders who are discerning their Confirmation name and need a little bit of guidance from our many saint books. We are always accepting donations of youth devotional and faith books, so check your bookshelves and if you find anything you think we’d be able to use, drop it off to the parish office! Though it took me some time to figure out the new locks, lights (the lights are on automatic sensors, but I am constantly trying to turn them off because I forget they will turn off on their own…) and of course the new sounds that come with any building, I have found that our youth have appreciated their new surroundings. I am thankful that we no longer have to worry about crossing McCracken to get to the church or chapel. I cannot tell you how many close calls we have had while trying to get the kids across the street (please, NEVER drive while texting…). I look forward to the day when the lobby connects both buildings so that we don’t have to worry about getting shoes and coats back on to spend some time in the chapel for adoration. I also look forward to having a kitchen in the new facility. We have had to be pretty creative with no preparation snacks, crockpot cooking, and coolers for refrigeration. One week, we even had a volunteer bring in her microwave from home so that we could pop up some fresh popcorn! It will be nice to have a small prep kitchen to make some food for retreats or youth group snacks beyond cookies! One other addition that will make our youth group meetings even better will be the completion of the large multipurpose room in the back wing. This large room will allow us to have indoor run around games in the winter. It will also be able to fit us all around the tables for our retreat meals. We are blessed to have a parish that supports its’ youth! Please know that your contributions help us to host a variety of events and groups that aim to minister to a diverse grouping of young people. Although it is not necessary to have our own space, nice furniture and modern equipment to bring our youth closer to Christ, it is a wonderful luxury that allows us to keep up with the cultural changes of our world. One last thought, many people say that the youth are the church of tomorrow. I disagree. They are today’s church. Our young church is very much alive and strong in faith. They certainly face many temptations and difficulties much earlier than generations in the past. They have full (sometimes overfilled) schedules, extremely high standards for success, and the challenge of surviving a critical social media driven world. It is not easy for young people, but when they are provided a safe place where they are accepted and affirmed for who they are, and are celebrated by others, and are able to contribute to the greater good, that is church. Today’s church.

Caption for photo: The youth learned about St. Therese Liseux and how she believed that we were all important to God. She spoke of how we are all members of God’s

Garden. Some of us big, beautiful and fragrant lilies, and others petite violets, but each of us beautiful and special to

God. Without anyone of us, the garden would not be complete. The youth each created their own unique flower in this painting of God’s Garden, which will be hung in our St.

Bernadette activity room.

YOUTH GROUP NEWS: Mark your calendars, all incoming 8th and 9th graders are invited to attend a retreat on Saturday,
