Summer Outreach Meetings
O God, whose Son Jesus is the good shepherd of your people: Grant that when we hear his voice we may know him who calls us each by name, and follow where he leads; who, with you and the Holy Spirit, lives and reigns, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.
The Lord is my Shepard, I have all I need, She makes me lie down in green meadows,
Beside the still waters, She will lead. Bobby McFerrin

THE ROAD TO EMMAUS shown in the painting
The Kitchen Maid, by Spanish painter Velázquez
!
Painted in the 1620’s, this work of art is kept at the National Gallery of Ireland in Dublin. !Here a servant, half African Moor and half Spanish Christian, a true outsider, is stunned at hearing the voice of Jesus, taking in this amazing post-resurrection appearance and becoming one of the first to recognize the risen Christ. Velázquez has used his imagination to fill in the biblical account - who cooked their meal? who served the men? !As happened time and again during his earthly ministry, those outside the inner circle of disciples and outside the acceptable membership of Jewish society encounter Jesus and recognize him to be someone very, very special - a man from God. And now, the maid who has served the meal at Emmaus, is witness to the resurrected Christ! !May we, too, be as perceptive as this maid, and like the disciples and the maid at Emmaus, know Jesus in the breaking of the bread…
