Pastor’s Reflection A couple of weeks ago several parishioners from St. Francis attended the Sunday afternoon performance of “Miracle on 34th St.” at the Ocean State Theatre right here on Jefferson Blvd. It was a delightful performance. This was the third production that I had seen at the theatre since its opening last year. I must say that I have not been disappointed. This is a great and conven-ient venue and the quality of the productions that I have seen thus far is superb. I would highly recommend the theatre and this Christmas production, in particular. It is a fun musical comedy, especially appropriate for the season. One of the things that I found enjoyable and, in fact remarkable, was the performance of the several children in the play. When I was their age, I could barely stand up in class when the teacher called on me. These children were singing and dancing in front of a huge crowd of strangers and looking as though they were thoroughly enjoying it. Each of them, including a young kindergarten student, had tremendous stage presence. I couldn’t help but be amazed at the talent that these children had. Of, course the grown-ups had just as much talent and I could only imagine what a long history they had as they grew up. I couldn’t help but think of how blessed we are to have these little children in our midst who share their lives and their talent to enrich us and we are better for it. How much worse off we would be if these children had not been allowed to be born. I was reminded of a talk that Pope Francis gave last September to a group of Catholic gynecologists. He spoke in very positive terms of the great opportunity and responsibility that each of these health professionals has as they bring new life into the world. He remarked that each newborn child and indeed each unborn child has the “face of the Lord”. He reminded these health care professionals that they have a special vocation in life as they are called to “contribute to recognize in human life the transcendent dimension, the imprint of the creative work of God, from the first instance of its conception”. The pope was calling them and us to realize that each human person, from the first moment of conception, has something of the divine, something of God to share with others, to contribute to the building up of the human community. He was be-moaning the fact that in our world today too many of these little ones have been prevented from letting their faces be seen by others. He also bemoaned that fact that the lofty profession of med-icine is being used to make this happen. This is what our Blessed Mother Mary, by her example, brought to the human race. She was willing to say yes to the gift of life even when it was unexpected, inconvenient and out of the course of ordinary human events. She was confused. She was frightened. She didn’t know how others, including her betrothed, would react. Yet she said yes to the gift of life and thus was born our Savior, Jesus, the Lord. As we celebrate the birth of Jesus, this coming week, may we learn even more deeply to rever-ence the gift of each human life and cherish the unique, individual gift that each one brings to us and our world. May we recognize in the newborn Christ the face of God which he wishes to im-print on each and every one of his little ones. May all of you, dear parishioners, and your families have a most blessed Christmas.
