On July 1, the universal church celebrated the Feast of Blessed Junipero Serra. Star ng next year, we will be celebra ng the Feast of Saint Junipero Serra. This feast was established in

September 1988, a er his bea fi ca on, when he was de-clared “Blessed” by Pope John Paul II.

In the last six months I have learned more about Junipero Serra than I ever imagined I could. I have also learned a great deal of the cri cisms of Serra and his life as an evangelizer of the California Mission Indians. There is no ques on in my mind that coloniza on had a detrimental eff ect upon the California Mission Indian culture. I admit it is very diffi cult to tease out the evangeliza on eff orts of Serra and his 15 Franciscan mis-sionary companions from coloniza on eff orts.

The Jesuits founded several missions in Baja California. Then the Jesuit order was expelled from “New Spain,” and the pope suppressed the order. Serra and his 15 companions were sent to the Baja California missions to con nue the work that the Jesuits had begun. Serra moved up the Baja peninsula, con nuing northward and fulfi lling his great dream of bringing the faith of the Gospel to the gen les. Up to this period, his missionary work in the New World had been primarily with the already bap zed.

The urgent endeavor of the Spanish crown to move further north was the result of Russian fur traders moving south, which threatened the Spanish coloniza on eff orts in Baja California and northern Mexico, especially with respect to the gold and silver in Mexico. Serra and the military moved further north with the mission eff ort to a empt to claim the lands for Spain before the Russians could claim Alta California. Serra founded the fi rst Alta California mission in San Diego, and shortly a er, Mission San Carlos in Carmel. Serra con nued on to found seven other missions.

The impact of the missions on the local people was mixed at best. Some felt that missionaries imposed Chris an-ity on the people; others state that the people were invited to be bap zed. Some state that the missionaries forced mission life upon the na ves; others state that the na ves had the

choice to remain at the missions or to return to their villages. Some state that the na ve peoples were forced into slavery; others state that the na ve people freely joined into the mis-sion life. I am sure that the truth is somewhere in between these two viewpoints.

Some of the cri cs state that Serra imposed physical punishment upon the na ve people when they were dis-obedient and found themselves in diffi culty with the mission system. Serra was a product of 18th-century paren ng in Spain, viewing himself as a stern father to “his children” in faith; at mes he strongly disciplined “his children” with the customary means of that me. The discipline imposed was to teach the “children,” out of love, both discipline and respect, in order to “save their souls.” By today’s standards, this type of “paren ng” is unacceptable, but in the 18th century, it was all Serra and his contemporaries knew.

Pope Francis’ announcement of his inten on to canonize Blessed Junipero Serra on September 23, 2015 in Washing-ton D.C. has brought to the a en on of the Franciscans and the Bishops of California the need to enter into a dialogue of concilia on that addresses the concerns of the descendants of the California Mission Indians. Announcements

Sisters and brothers,

Today we will hear Jesus’ invita on to His disciples

to join Him in a boat and cross to another shore. A storm ap-proached, they were terrifi ed… You know the story- Jesus slept beside them, and in fear they woke Him asking “do you not care?” He asked them why they were afraid, asked about their faith, and s lled the sea. We each follow Jesus, and are called to new things. We each can become terrifi ed, and have our faith, our trust in Jesus challenged by the circumstances in which we fi nd ourselves when we follow.

For over a year, I’ve been discerning moving on—and now is fi nally the me. Come the fi rst of August I will be leav-ing my posi on here at St. Francis to seek other ministry op-portuni es. I am so grateful to have shared life and ministry with so many of you beginning with the Centennial year and Fr. Anthony, sharing in bap sms and confi rma on of adults, RCIA and liturgy, fi lling in for a me in outreach and music. Each of you is fi lled with tremendous gi s. I have learned much from you, your rela onships and service with one an-other, Saints Francis and Clare. I hope to carry these with me. At this me I honestly do not know where I will live, or whom I will serve- I would tell you if I did. I am being challenged in a new way to trust, and to go. I ask only for your prayers. Please know that my love and prayers remain always with you. Don’t be afraid. May we always have the courage and faith to say “yes” to Jesus’ call to love and serve, and some mes, to go cross over to the other shore.

Every Blessing,

Peggy

Beloved People of God,

One of my most favorite lines of scripture is from

Revela on: “Behold, I make all things new!” For the past year I have been experiencing a call to something new—not only for myself, but also for you, beloved people of God! Feel-ing this call, then learning of Peggy’s decision to move on, I felt that the ming was right for me to re re, for it would give the parish the most op ons for hiring—possibly someone who could direct both liturgy and music. And so, as of August 1, I will be re ring from my posi on as Director of Liturgy at St. Francis.

I have been exceedingly blessed to have been on staff here for nearly 15 years, ministering alongside you; together, sharing all our gi s, we have learned to pray well, St. Francis! I am grateful for your generosity, your kindness, your enthu-siasm, and, yes, for your spunk—which has shaped me and helped me grow. I am not sure yet what I will be doing in the future, but, fi lled with an cipa on, I am listening and remain-ing open to God’s something “new” as I hope you will. Thank you for the honor of being able to serve you and our God in this place. St. Francis Parish and all of you will always hold a special place in my heart.

Christ’s grace and peace be with us all,

Deborah Jones

In the U.S., we have slipped into an illusion of personal independence. Yet, when we come to worship, we hear of

"community," "the Body of Christ," "solidarity," and "Church." Consider adop ng an a tude of inter-dependence—in all your circles of rela onships.

Pope Francis speaks of inter-dependence when he writes:

“I urgently appeal, then, for a new dialogue about how we are shaping the future of our planet. We need a conversa on which includes everyone, since the environmental challenge we are undergoing, and its human roots, concern and aff ect us all. The worldwide ecological movement has already made considerable progress and led to the establishment of numerous organiza ons commi ed to raising awareness of these challenges.... We require a new and universal solidarity. As the bishops of Southern Africa have stated: ‘Everyone's talents and involve-ment are needed to redress the damage caused by human abuse of God's crea on.’ All of us can cooper-ate as instruments of God for the care of crea on, each according to his or her own culture, experience, involvements and talents.” —Laudato Si #14

Today's Gospel fi nds Jesus teaching in the synagogue. And many there had mixed percep ons of him and what he had to say. “‘Is he not the carpenter, the son of Mary?’... And they took off ense at him.”

Pope Francis writes: “Regre ably, many eff orts to seek concrete solu ons to the environmental crisis have proved ineff ec ve, not only because of powerful opposi on but also because of a more general lack of interest. Obstruc onist a tudes, even on the part of believers, can range from denial of the problem to indiff erence, nonchalant resigna on or blind confi dence in technical solu ons. We require a new and universal solidarity.” —Laudato Si #14

Mission Indians in the California Missions today. This dia-logue has reminded us that Junipero Serra and the friars built the missions to serve as a home and a place of evangeliza on for God’s mercy, love and compassion. Our current work is to invite all involved once again to renew the inten on of Serra for the missions to be places of welcome and peace.

This gives a glimpse into what I am very much involved in— un l the canoniza on occurs.
