FROM FR. QUINT
Last week the priests
were invited to share their
vocation stories with fifth
grade students at our cluster
elementary school, Xavier.
Our students offered very fine
questions and were thorough-
ly respectful. I was struck by
the various ways God calls us
to the priesthood. Our stories
were quite different. Sometimes God invites us to consider priestly
ministry at a young age. Other men have an established career when
the Lord inspires them to reflect on His plan. A consistent factor in
discernment, however, was a good relationship with a priest who
supported, directed, invited and encouraged. I suppose it is difficult to
pursue a way of life with which we are unfamiliar. In my last assignment,
two young brothers "job shadowed" me one day to get a sense of the
daily life of a priest. Some folks think a priest just prays, celebrates
Mass, and thinks about how to make the lives of others miserable!
Today we mark World Day of Prayer for Vocations. We know there
is such a rich harvest and more laborers are needed. I believe that God
will provide us with the priests needed to bring Holy Order to His
people. Our task is to assist those God is calling to listen and to
respond to his voice so that they discover His plan and enjoy true
happiness and peace in their vocation. Likewise, I am confident that
many young women from our parishes likely are being called to
religious life as a consecrated sister or nun. Vows of poverty, chastity,
and obedience will free them to pursue God's will and help to build His
kingdom. Ministry in a school, parish, hospital, or mission territory will
bring fulfillment to their spirits. Thankfully, over the years, many native
sons and daughters have pursued vocations of service to the Church
and brought souls to the Lord.
May we listen to the Holy Spirit and respond to God's plan for us.
May we foster vocations to the priesthood and religious life in thought,
word, and deed.

we are being examined today about a good deed done to a cripple, namely,
by what means he was saved, then all of you and all the people of Israel
should know that it was in the name of Jesus Christ the Nazorean whom

Beloved: See what love the Father has bestowed on us that we may be

what we shall be has not yet been revealed. We do know that when it is
revealed we shall be like him, for we shall see him as he is.

Gospel: Luke 24:3548
Jesus said: “I am the good shepherd. A good shepherd lays down his life for
the sheep. A hired man, who is not a shepherd and whose sheep are not his
own, sees a wolf coming and leaves the sheep and runs away, and the wolf
catches and scatters them. This is because he works for pay and has no
concern for the sheep. I am the good shepherd, and I know mine and mine
know me, just as the Father knows me and I know the Father; and I will lay
down my life for the sheep. I have other sheep that do not belong to this
fold. These also I must lead, and they will hear my voice, and there will be
one flock, one shepherd. This is why the Father loves me, because I lay
down my life in order to take it up again. No one takes it from me, but I lay
it down on my own. I have power to lay it down, and power to take it up
again. This command I have received from my Father.”
