ST. GABRIEL THE ARCHANGEL PARISH BULLETIN October 11, 2015

Twenty-Eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Have you ever played whist? I knew a whist player who would always bid high, take big risks, because he wanted

the prize of ‘setting’ you or “running a Boston.” He never played it safe and, invariably, he won many times more

than he lost. He was always willing to take the risk for the promise of what was to come. There are times in life

when we may face a similar situation. Do I go for it or should I play it safe? Do I stick with what I know I have

or try for something better but as yet unseen? In today’s Gospel, we see a young man faced with those questions.

He could have taken the risk, accepted Jesus’ challenge and its rewards.

“There is something more you must do. Go sell what you have and give to the poor; then come follow me.”

The young man fully understood what Jesus meant. But he played it safe; he walked away from the challenge. He

refused the invitation to a deeper calling, to a deeper relationship with God.

“What must we do to share in eternal life?” Clearly each of us must ask God this question for ourselves. What is

the more we must do? Sometimes ‘more’ doesn’t mean emptying our savings account and giving it all to the poor.

Sometimes ‘more’ is very ordinary like paying more attention to our spouse and kids. Or taking time to visit with

our elderly parents and grandparents? Or seeking a peaceful means to resolve a conflict? Or really forgiving a

hurt?

If we can start with these small opportunities to do ‘more’ then when we are called to other larger opportunities

they won’t seem so far out of the realm of possibility. We won’t try to play it safe but become risk-takers instead,

accepting Jesus’ challenge to stand with “the least among us.” Yes, follow the commandments and accept the

teachings of the Church then choose and love that to which these commandments and laws point-- to the love of

God and the love of neighbor.

“There is one more thing you must do. Go, sell what you have and give to the poor; then come follow me!”

In the Peace and Love of Our Risen Lord!

Father John Michele Bergeron

LEADERSHIP FORMATION

WORKSHOP – SAVE THE DATE

Saturday, November 7th

Holy Land Gifts- Olive Wood Carvings for sale

after Masses Saida & George Rashmawi, who are volunteer

members from the Roman Catholic Church in

Bethlehem in the Holy Land, will be visiting our

parish the weekend of Oct. 24/25. They will speak to

us about the Christian struggle in the Holy Land.

They will also have some beautiful Olive Wood

carvings which are all handmade by the Christian

people in Bethlehem, for sale after all the Masses this

weekend.

The purpose of this visit is to help maintain the

existence of the Catholic people in the Holy Land.

Catholic Christians were once the majority in that

land but the percentage has now dropped to less than

1.5%. Please take time to look at the carvings, make

a purchase and help this church maintain a presence

in the very land where our Lord was born, where he

preached the Good News and where his Kingdom

was first established. These carvings make great

sacramental and Christmas gifts that have an added

special significance given where and why they were

made.
