Pathways for ‘N’ Level (Sec 4NT) Students

All Normal (Technical) course students who have completed their secondary 4 education can apply to

further their studies at ITE. Schools may also laterally transfer Secondary 4 Normal (Technical) students

to Secondary 4 Normal (Academic) if they have obtained grade A for EL and Mathematics and grade B or

better for one other subject at the Normal (Technical) Level.

Subject: Biology

Introduction:

Science Education aims to prepare our students to be able to contribute to a technological-driven world. At the same time, it seeks to mould them into useful and effective citizens with a strong spirit of scientific inquiry. Scientific Inquiry is grounded on the three domains of · Knowledge, Understanding and Application, · Skills and Processes, and · Ethics and Attitudes. These domains are very important for an all-rounded Science Education. Also, students must understand the roles of Science in their daily life, society and the environment. As science knowledge is ever-expanding with rapid advances, students should also cultivate the understanding of the limitations and tentative nature of our knowledge in science. This syllabus is designed to have less emphasis on factual materials, but a much greater emphasis on the understanding and application of scientific concepts and principles. This approach has been adopted in recognition of the need for students to develop skills that will be of long-term value in an increasingly complex and globalised world, rather than focusing on large quantities of factual material, which may have only short-term relevance. It is envisaged that teaching and learning programmes based on this syllabus will feature a wide variety of learning experiences designed to promote inquiry. A combination of appropriate strategies in teaching topics in this syllabus will be used. The assessment will be specifically intended to test skills, comprehension and insight in familiar and unfamiliar contexts.

Section A will carry 50 marks and will consist of a variable number of compulsory structured questions. Section B will carry 30 marks and will consist of three free-response questions. The first two questions are compulsory questions, one of which will be a data-based question requiring candidates to interpret, evaluate or solve problems using a stem of information. This question will carry 8-12 marks. The last question will be presented in an either/or form and will carry 10 marks. Revised O-Level Pure Biology Practical Assessment Paper 3 (1 h 50 min, 40 marks) consisting of two to three compulsory practical questions, based mainly on Assessment Objective C. One or more of the questions may incorporate assessment of Planning (P) and require candidates to apply and integrate knowledge and understanding from different sections of the syllabus. The assessment of Presentation of Data and Observations (PDO) and Analysis, Conclusions and Evaluation (ACE) may include questions on data-analysis which do not require practical equipment and apparatus.

Introduction:

Science Education aims to prepare our students to be able to contribute to a technological-driven world. At the same time, it seeks to mould them into useful and effective citizens with a strong spirit of scientific inquiry. This syllabus is designed to place less emphasis on factual materials and greater emphasis on the understanding and application of scientific concepts and principles. This approach has been adapted in recognition of the need for students to develop skills that will be of long term value in an increasingly technological world rather than focusing on large quantities of factual materials, which may have only short term relevance. It is important that, throughout the course, attention should be drawn to: (i) the finite life of the world’s resources and hence the need for recycling and conservation; (ii) economic considerations in the chemical industry, such as the availability and cost of raw materials and energy; (iii) the social, environmental, health and safety issues relating to the chemical industry; (iv) the importance of chemicals in industry and in everyday life. It is envisaged that teaching and learning programmes based on this syllabus will feature a wide variety of learning experiences designed to promote acquisition of expertise and understanding. Teachers are encouraged to use a combination of appropriate strategies including developing appropriate practical works for their students to facilitate a greater understanding of the subject.

Introduction:

Scientific Inquiry is grounded on the three domains of · Knowledge, Understanding and Application, · Skills and Processes, and · Ethics and Attitudes. These domains are very important for an all-rounded Science Education. Also, students must understand the roles of Science in their daily life, society and the environment. As science knowledge is ever-expanding with rapid advances, students should also cultivate the understanding of the limitations and tentative nature of our knowledge in science.

The ‘O’ level physics syllabus provides students with a coherent understanding of energy, matter, and their interrelationships. It focuses on investigating natural phenomena and then applying patterns, models (including mathematical ones), principles, theories and laws to explain the physical behaviour of the universe. The theories and concepts presented in this syllabus belong to a branch of physics commonly referred to as classical physics. Modern physics, developed to explain the quantum properties at the atomic and sub-atomic level, is built on knowledge of these classical theories and concepts. Students should think of physics in terms of scales. Whereas the classical theories such as Newton’s laws of motion apply to common physical systems that are larger than the size of atoms, a more comprehensive theory, quantum theory, is needed to describe systems at the atomic and sub-atomic scales. It is at these scales that physicists are currently making new discoveries and inventing new applications. It is envisaged that teaching and learning programmes based on this syllabus would feature a wide variety of learning experiences designed to promote acquisition of scientific expertise and understanding, and to develop values and attitudes relevant to science. Teachers are encouraged to use a combination of appropriate strategies to effectively engage and challenge their students. It is expected that students will apply investigative and problem-solving skills, effectively communicate the theoretical concepts covered in this course and appreciate the contribution physics makes to our understanding of the physical world.

Introduction:

Science Education aims to prepare our students to be able to contribute to a technological-driven world. At the same time, it seeks to mould them into useful and effective citizens with a strong spirit of scientific inquiry. Scientific Inquiry is grounded on the three domains of · Knowledge, Understanding and Application, · Skills and Processes, and · Ethics and Attitudes. These domains are very important for an all-rounded Science Education. Also, students must understand the roles of Science in their daily life, society and the environment. As science knowledge is ever-expanding with rapid advances, students should also cultivate the understanding of the limitations and tentative nature of our knowledge in science.

The Ordinary Level Science Syllabus is designed to have less emphasis on factual materials, but a much greater emphasis on the understanding and application of scientific concepts and principles. This approach has been adopted in recognition of the need for students to develop skills that will be of long-term value in an increasingly technological world, rather than focusing on large quantities of factual material, which may have only short-term relevance. It is envisaged that teaching and learning programmes based on this syllabus will feature a wide variety of learning experiences designed to promote inquiry. A combination of appropriate strategies in teaching topics in this syllabus will be used. The assessment will be specifically intended to test skills, comprehension and insight in familiar and unfamiliar contexts.

Theory Papers (for ‘O’ Level) Paper 1 (1 h, 40 marks) This paper consists of 40 compulsory multiple choice questions of the direct choice type providing approximately equal coverage of the two appropriate sections of the syllabus. This paper will be set at the same time for all three syllabuses, 5076, 5077, 5078. A copy of the Data Sheet ‘Colours of Some Common Metal Hydroxides’ and ‘The Periodic Table of the Elements’ will be printed as part of Paper 1 for syllabus 5076 and 5078.

Paper 2 (1 h 15 min, 65 marks) This paper consists of two sections. Section A will carry 45 marks and will contain a number of compulsory structured questions of variable mark value. Section B will carry 20 marks and will contain three questions, each of 10 marks. Candidates are required to answer any two questions. The questions will be based on the Physics section of the syllabus.

The Physics question(s) will be identical in Papers 5076 and 5077. The Chemistry and the Biology question(s) will, likewise, be common to the respective papers. This Paper will be set at the same time for all three syllabuses, 5076, 5077, 5078. The use of reference material, other than the Chemistry Practical Notes is not permitted. In one or both questions, candidates will be expected to suggest a modification or extension, which does not need to be executed.

The N(T) Science Curriculum places stronger emphasis on development of scientific process skills for the students. This is done through the key inquiry activities (3 for Lower Secondary and 6 for Upper Secondary) which have been designed to support the learning of science as an inquiry for our N(T) students. The curriculum also provides platforms for students to develop the ethics, values and attitudes that are associated with Science. Students will also develop a sense of responsibility in areas that include responsible use of limited and valuable resources (e.g. fossil fuels), conservation of the environment (e.g. preventing water pollution by disposing wastes properly) and making lifestyle choices to maintain their bodies in a good state of health.

Subject: ‘O’ Additional Mathematics

Introduction:

The syllabus prepares students adequately for A Level H2 Mathematics, where a strong foundation in algebraic manipulation skills and mathematical reasoning skills are required. The content is organised into three strands, namely, Algebra, Geometry and Trigonometry, and Calculus. Besides conceptual understanding and skill proficiency explicated in the content strand, the development of process skills, namely, reasoning, communication and connections, thinking skills and heuristics, and applications and modelling are also emphasised. The O Level Additional Mathematics syllabus assumes knowledge of O Level Mathematics.

Subject: ‘NA’ Additional Mathematics

Introduction:

The syllabus intends to prepare students adequately for O Level Additional Mathematics. The content is organised into three strands, namely, Algebra, Geometry and Trigonometry, and Calculus. Besides conceptual understanding and skill proficiency explicated in the content strand, the development of process skills, namely, reasoning, communication and connections, thinking skills and heuristics, and applications and modelling are also emphasised.

Introduction:

Principles of Accounts (syllabus code 7175) is designed to provide students with a meaningful basic introduction to financial accounting and to develop an appreciation of the discipline of accounting. It is grounded in preparing, communicating and using financial information, and appreciating the need for ethical conduct. The subject places emphasis on the understanding and application of accounting knowledge to develop lifelong skills and values that will be of value in the increasingly complex world of business. Subject: Literature in English

Introduction:

Literature is the critical study of literary texts. Central to the subject is the critical analysis of how language is purposefully and creatively used in texts in order to create meaning and explore issues or themes. Through the literary skills of reading and responding critically and personally to literary texts, students actively construct meaning and in the process make connections between the texts, their lives and the world. The study of Literature encourages students to enter imagined worlds and explore, examine, and reflect on both current and timeless issues, as well as their individuality and humanity. The study of literary texts both sharpens and broadens students’ minds. The critical thinking skills uniquely offered by the study of Literature include: • cultivating a questioning mind; • exploring personal and social issues; and • interrogating and managing ambiguities and multiple perspectives.

Jobs that involve communication, writing skills and / or literary knowledge. These include: law, marketing, writing and journalism, teaching consultancy, business & advertising, the performing arts, academia, government, linguistics, foreign languages, media and design.

Careers in the sciences, engineering, technology and maths also require a good command of the English Language. Writing proposals, academic papers & articles and effective communication with others is key to getting funding for projects and reaching out to people with your work.

Introduction:

The Humanities offered in St Gabriel’s Secondary School is a compulsory subject for all Upper Secondary Express and Normal (Academic) students. It comprises the subject Social Studies, with either Geography or History.

These subjects aspire towards preparing students to be curious, informed, concerned and participative citizens of tomorrow. Excellent students of the Humanities are not just well-versed in their subject, they are also great communicators and excellent writers. They often have a love of arts and people as well. These qualities translate into many job options:

For many employers, a good humanities student is testament to hard work, enthusiasm, creativity and ability to process lots of information. Many of the skills learnt would be transferable into any jobs which require communication as a human endeavour such as: social scientists, teachers, librarians and education administration, journalists, writers and editors, lawyers, public relations or human resources specialists, historians, geographers and museum curating, counsellors and social workers, interpreters, translators and linguists, foreign service, law enforcement and defence jobs, travel jobs, event organizers, banking, sales and advertising, arts-related jobs.

Subject: Art (‘O’, ‘N’ and ‘T’ Syllabus)

Introduction:

Art is a subject designed to provide students with the opportunity to give form and meaning to their ideas, thoughts and feelings through visual and tactile forms. The process of Art making involves the use of a variety of media and technologies, as well as its role in the development of critical and creative thinking. Visual literacy skills such as perceiving and responding to visual images, and analysis of visual information in its many forms are further enhanced and developed in this subject.

Key Features in St. Gabriel’s Secondary School:

We aim to nurture Gabrielites with an informed awareness and appreciation of Visual Art by developing critical and analytical skills through research, exploration and creation of artworks. In the process, we hope to enhance their ability to identify and solve problems creatively in visual and tactile forms by encouraging experimentation and innovation through exploration and creative use of materials and processes.

Through the course, we strive to develop Gabrielites’ competency in the use of Art & Design principles, materials and processes, by fostering self-confidence and a sense of achievement through the practice of the Visual Art. At the same time, we aim to cultivate them with an inquiring mind, a spirit of experimentation and passion for the Visual Art.

Semester Programmes / Course Outline:

Sec 3 Semester 1: Art appreciation, Art terms, Elements of Arts, Rendering Skills, exposure to Art mediums, exposure to Art Movements (Surrealism and Cubism), Mixed-media.

Sec 3 Semester 2: Painting, Principles of Design, Research and exploration, Crafts (Aluminium tooling, Printmaking, Paper cut, etc.). Sec 3 students will embark on learning journey to the galleries and museums so as to expose them to the multitude of expressions in the Art world. Assessment:

An Art examination consists of two papers - Paper 1 & 2.

Art Paper 1 (Coursework), is a body of project, (mid-January to mid-August). The question paper with six themes will be issued to the candidates and candidates are to make response to one of the themes. Students need to submit the following 2 components in the coursework:

1. Eight A2 size Presentation boards – preparatory studies, which include research, drawings/sketches, developmental works and exploration of artists/artworks relevant to the chosen theme.

2. One finished artwork

Art Paper 2 (Drawing & Paintiing), 3-hour paper, which will be taken during the October/November National Examination periods. The question paper will be given three weeks before the commencement of the O Level Examination. Six themes will be issued and candidates are to make response to one of the themes on paper of A3 or A2 size. Preparatory studies consisting five pieces of A3 size papers must be submitted together with the final artwork taken during the 3-hour Paper.

Course Entry Requirement

Recommended for students who has achieved a pass of 60% in Art.

Students choosing Art should also possess interest and passion in creating artworks. They would need to be willing to engage in hands-on experimentation and exploration throughout the 2 or 3 years course.

Introduction:

Design & technology (D&T) is a subject that emphasises on design activities involving research and making decision

based on evidences. This requires the application of knowledge and skills in the areas of design process and basic

material science, engineering and technology.

We aim to harness Gabrielites’ innate curiousity to create through design-and-make acitivities, foster values and

dispositions for innovation, research and communication, develop tenacity and resilience for continuous refinement

D&T examinations consists of two papers. Paper 1 & 2.

Paper 1 is the Theory Examination paper assessing students’ knowledge and skills in the purpose of design, design process, technical drawings and basic engineering technology (structures, mechanisms and electronics). This paper is taken during the October/November National Examination periods.

Paper 2 is the Coursework which commences in mid-January and due for submission by mid-August. Students are required to design and make a design product based on the “Theme” of the year. For example, the Theme for 2017 for the respective streams are: ‘O’ – “Motion”, ‘NA’ – “Organisation” and ‘NT’ – “product that uses light or shade”. Students need to submit the following 3 components in the coursework.

1. Design Journal – sketches and documentation of the process of design from theme to final solution; 2. Presentation Boards – these are final presentation of their completed product, in terms of

the design situation, brief, specifications;

the technical drawings (using CAD software) showing the technical details, assembly and material list;

the illustration of context and contextual use of product.

‘O’ Level: 3 boards in A2; ‘NA’ Level: 3 boards in A2; and ‘NT’ Level: 2 boards in A2. 3. Final Prototype – which is called the Artefact in the subject. Students must produce a prototype solution

using resistant material such as acrylic, wood or metal. Precision parts may be manufactured by 3D printers but students must produce the CAD drawings.

Recommended for students who has achieved a pass of 60% in D&T and should possess interest in design activities and willing to engage in hands-on experimentation, frequent sketching and drawing, as well as intensive research activities.

Department Craft & Technology

Subject: Elements of Business Skills

Introduction:

In Elements of Business Skills (EBS), the students will acquire knowledge of the business environment and selected aspects of the retail, travel and tourism, and hospitality industries. The subject helps develop basic employability and enterprise skills for working in the service-related industries focusing on the marketing of products and services and customer relations.

Key Features in St. Gabriel’s Secondary School:

Students will acquire personal effectiveness in service-related skills, including communication, problem-solving, presenting evidence and making judgments. EBS will also help to develop social awareness, relationship management and responsible decision making.

Through their course of study, students will become aware of the prospects and challenges of a career in the services sector based on the context of Singapore.

Semester Programmes / Course Outline:

Sec 3 Semester 1: Introduction to Business, Businesses in the Service Industries (Travel and Tourism, Hospitality & Retail), Introduction to Marketing, Marketing Mix Sec 3 Semester 2: Communication with the Customer, Customer Service Sec 4 Semester 1: Revision, N Level Coursework Sec 4 Semester 2: Revision, N Level Exam

Assessment:

EBS examinations consist of two papers. Paper 1 & 2.

Paper 1 (1.5 hrs) is the theory examination paper assessing students’ knowledge and understanding of concepts, techniques and skills of marketing and customer relations in business in relation to the services sector with particular reference to travel and tourism, hospitality and retail industries. It also tests students’ application of knowledge and understanding to a variety of scenarios as well as their analysis of data and given scenarios to draw conclusions. This paper is taken during the October National Examination period. Paper 2 (20 hr Coursework) commences in end-January and is due for submission by early-May. Students are required to complete four tasks in the computer lab within the given 20 hours. Students need to analyse the questions and apply their knowledge of EBS. Students are required to conduct online research as well as conduct personal surveys for some of their tasks. In addition, students need to be equipped with knowledge of basic computing software such as Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint in order to complete their given tasks.

Course Entry Requirement

Recommended for students who has achieved a pass of 60% in English as well as the ability to analyse and apply their skills in a variety of situations.
