Sentences & Introduction - Greeting

We meet in the name of Christ who died and was raised by the glory of God the Father. Grace and mercy be with you all.

I am the resurrection and the life, saith the Lord; he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live; and whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die.

I know that my Redeemer liveth, and that he shall stand at the latter day upon the earth; and though this body be destroyed, yet shall I see God; whom I shall see for myself and mine eyes shall behold, and not as a stranger.

For none of us liveth to himself, and no man dieth to himself. For if we live, we live unto the Lord; and if we die, we die unto the Lord. Whether we live, therefore, or die, we are the Lord’s.

Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord; even so saith the Spirit, for they rest from their labours.

Jesus said: ’Come to me, all you that are weary and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me; for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.’

Let us pray

We are here to express sorrow that a life is ended and to give thanks for a life well-lived. We are here grieving that a life is over, but rejoicing that life eternal has just begun. We are here conscious of separation - yet confident we shall meet again. We are here remembering what has been - and looking forward to what shall be. We are here to pay tribute to all John has meant to us. And to remind ourselves of all he means to God.

O God, whose mercies cannot be numbered: Accept our prayers on behalf of thy faithful servant John, and grant him an entrance into the land of light and joy, in the fellowship of thy saints; through Jesus Christ thy Son our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

Penitential Kyries

As children of a loving heavenly Father, let us seek the forgiveness of God, for he is full of gentleness and compassion.

Call to remembrance, O Lord, your compassion, and your loving Kindness, for they have been from of old.

Lord, have mercy. Congregation: Lord, have mercy.

Remember not my sins nor my transgressions, But according to your mercy think on me.

Christ, have mercy. Congregation: Christ, have mercy.

O keep my life, and deliver me, put me not to shame. For I have put my trust in you.

Lord, have mercy. Congregation: Lord, have mercy.

May God our Father forgive us our sins and bring us to the eternal joy of his kingdom where dust and ashes have no dominion. Amen.

Collect Merciful Father, hear our prayers and comfort us, renew our trust in your Son, whom you raised from the dead, strengthen our faith that all who have died in the love of Christ will share in his resurrection; who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit. Amen

Proclaiming and Receiving the Word Psalm 121

I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills; from whence cometh my help? My help cometh even from the Lord, who hath made heaven and earth. He will not suffer thy foot to be moved, and he that keepeth thee will not sleep. Behold, he that keepeth Israel shall neither slumber nor sleep. The Lord himself is thy keeper; the Lord is thy defence upon thy right hand; So that the sun shall not burn thee by day, neither the moon by night. The Lord shall preserve thee from all evil; yea, it is even he that shall keep thy soul. The Lord shall preserve thy going out, and thy coming in, * from this time forth for evermore.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

Psalm 139

O Lord, thou hast searched me out, and known me. Thou knowest my down-sitting and mine up-rising; thou understandest my thoughts long before. Thou art about my path, and about my bed, and art acquainted with all my ways. For lo, there is not a word in my tongue, but thou, O Lord, knowest it altogether.

Thou hast beset me behind and before, and laid thine hand upon me. Such knowledge is too wonderful and excellent for me; I cannot attain unto it. Whither shall I go then from thy Spirit? or whither shall I go then from thy presence? If I climb up into heaven, thou art there; if I go down to hell, thou art there also. If I take the wings of the morning, and remain in the uttermost parts of the sea; Even there also shall thy hand lead me, and thy right hand shall hold me. If I say, Peradventure the darkness shall cover me, then shall my night be turned to day. Yea, the darkness is no darkness with thee, but the night is as clear as day; the darkness and light to thee are both alike.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

Reading : 1 Corinthians 15: 20-58

Now is Christ risen from the dead, and become the first-fruits of them that slept. For since by man came death, by man came also the resurrection of the dead. For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive. But every man in his own order: Christ the first-fruits; afterward they that are Christ’s, at his coming.

Then cometh the end, when he shall have delivered up the kingdom to God, even the Father; when he shall have put down all rule and all authority and power. For he must reign, till he hath put all enemies under his feet. The last enemy that shall be destroyed is death.

But someone may say, How are the dead raised up? and with what body do they come? How foolish! That which thou sowest is not quickened, except it die: and that which thou sowest, thou sowest not that body that shall be, but bare grain, it may chance of wheat, or of some other grain; but God giveth it a body, as it hath pleased him, and to every seed his own body.

Page 4: St Gall’s Church Parish of Carnalea

So also is the resurrection of the dead. It is sown in corruption; it is raised in incorruption: it is sown in dishonour; it is raised in glory: it is sown in weakness; it is raised in power: it is sown a natural body; it is raised a spiritual body. There is a natural body, and there is a spiritual body. Behold, I show you a mystery: We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed, in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump: for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed. For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality.

So when this corruptible shall have put on incorruption, and this mortal shall have put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written, Death is swallowed up in victory. O death, where is thy sting? O grave, where is thy victory? The sting of death is sin; and the strength of sin is the law: but thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. Therefore, my beloved, be ye steadfast, unmoveable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, forasmuch as ye know that your labour is not in vain in the Lord.

This is the word of the Lord Thanks be to God

You, Christ, are the King of glory, the eternal Son of the Father. When you took our flesh to set us free. you humbly chose the virgin's womb. You overcame the sting of death and opened the kingdom of heaven to all believers.

You are seated at God's right hand in glory .We believe that you will come to be our judge. Come then, Lord, and help your people, bought with the price of your own blood, and bring us with your saints. to glory everlasting.

Intercessions & Prayers of Thanksgiving

The response to the words “Lord in your mercy” is “hear our prayer”

I know that my Redeemer lives, and that in the end he will stand upon the earth.I myself will see him with my own eyes. Job 19: 25,27a

God of mercy, Lord of Life, you have made us in your own image to reflect your truth and light: we give you thanks for John, for the grace and mercy he received from you, for all that was good and true in his life, for the memories we treasure today.

Silence Lord in your mercy, hear our prayer.

Your mighty power brings good out of evil, joy out of grief and life out of death. Look in mercy on all who mourn, give them patient faith in times of darkness and strengthen them with the knowledge of your love.

Silence Lord in your mercy, hear our prayer.

You are tender towards your children and your mercy is over all your works. Heal the memories of hurt and failure. Give us the wisdom and grace to use aright the time that is left to us on earth, to turn to Christ and follow in his steps in the way that leads to everlasting life.

Silence Lord in your mercy, hear our prayer.

Page 5: St Gall’s Church Parish of Carnalea

Heavenly Father, we thank you for your servant John; for the example he has left us, and for the fellowship we have enjoyed with him. We rejoice in your promise of eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord, in whom the bond of love is never broken. Amen.

Almighty God, we praise you for the blessings brought to us through your church. We bless you for the grace of the sacraments, for our fellowship in Christ with you and with each other, for the teaching of the scriptures, and for the preaching of your word. We thank you for the holy example of your saints, for your faithful servants departed this life, and for the memory and example of all that has been good and true in their lives. Number us with them, we pray you, in the company of the redeemed in heaven; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Eternal God, we give thanks for all those who have died in faith, for the unceasing praise of the company of heaven, for the promise to those who mourn that all tears shall be wiped away, for the pledge of death destroyed and victory won, for our foretaste of eternal life through baptism and eucharist, for our hope in the Spirit, for the communion of saints. May we live by faith, walk in hope and be renewed in love, until the world reflects your glory and you are all in all. Even so, come, Lord Jesus. Amen.

Give faith and comfort, O Lord, to all who are bereaved, especially we pray this day for Louis and for Stephen. Strengthen them to meet the days to come with steadfastness and patience, not sorrowing as those without hope, but in thankful remembrance of your mercy in the past, and waiting for a joyful reunion in heaven in Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Eternal God, you hold all souls in life: May the bright beams of your light and heavenly comfort shine on your whole Church, and grant that we, following the good example of those who loved and served you here and are now at rest, may at last enter with them into the fullness of your unending joy; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

O Lord, support us all the day long until the shades lengthen, and the evening comes, and the busy world is hushed, the fever of life is over, and our work is done. Then, Lord, in your mercy grant us safe lodging, a holy rest, and peace at the last; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

We say together

Heavenly Father, in your Son Jesus Christ you have given us a true faith and a sure hope: Strengthen this faith and hope in us all our days; That we may live as those who believe in the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, and the resurrection to eternal life; through your Son Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

A moment of silence.

The Committal

The minister says Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. In his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead. 1 Peter 1: 3

The Lord is full of compassion and mercy, slow to anger and of great kindness. As a father cares for his children, so does the Lord care for those who fear him. For he himself knows of what we are made; he remembers that we are but dust. Our days are like the grass; we flourish like a flower of the field. When the wind goes over it, it is gone, and its place shall know it no more. But the merciful goodness of the Lord endures for ever on those who fear him, and his righteousness on children's children.

Almighty God, our heavenly Father, you have given us a sure and certain hope of the resurrection to eternal life. In your keeping are all those who have departed in Christ. We here commit the body of our brother John to be cremated earth to earth, ashes to ashes, dust to dust; in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, who died, and was buried, and rose again for us, and who shall change our mortal body that it may be like his glorious body, according to the mighty working by which he is able to subdue all things to himself Thanks be to God who gives us the victory through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord. They are blessed indeed, says the Spirit, for they rest from their labours. Revelation 14: 13

We conclude our prayers with the family prayer

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

The Farewell in Christ

Our help is in the name of the Lord, Congregation: who has made heaven and earth.

God our creator and redeemer, by your power Christ conquered death and entered into glory. Confident of his victory and claiming his promises, we now leave your servant John in your gracious keeping; in the name of Jesus our Lord, who died and is alive and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

Page 7: St Gall’s Church Parish of Carnalea

Nunc Dimittis Lord, now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace: according to thy word. For mine eyes have seen thy salvation which thou hast prepared before the face of all people; To be a light to lighten the Gentiles and to be the glory of thy people Israel. Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning, is now, and shall be for ever. Amen.

May God give to you and to all those whom you love his comfort and his peace, his light and his joy, in this world and the next; and the blessing of God almighty, the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit, be upon you and remain with you always. Amen.
