The Day ChrisT meTZaCChaeus
One day as Jesus was passing through Jericho, He met aman named Zacchaeus. This encounter is one of the mostinteresting stories of the Gospels because of thetremendous application to the great majority of people.Zacchaeus is spectacular because he is not like othercharacters who encountered Christ. He was not called asthe disciples were, nor was Zacchaeus suffering from somekind of affliction or illness. What makes Zacchaeus so specialis that he was an average man. Jesus met Zacchaeus whilepassing through town. Maybe you have met him too.
Jesus called Zacchaeus by name! Jesus illustrated how weshould relate to people and how God relates to us. Godknows our name. Scriptures say that God desires His face toshine upon you. A shining face is beautiful description ofsomeone who is happy to see you.
Jesus called Zacchaeus by name. He made eye contact, andspoke to him face to face. Jesus communicated toZacchaeus that He was glad to see him. This was not aninterruption in the Messiah's schedule. Jesus always hastime for those who seek Him. Small children will often saywhen they are building with blocks, jumping off the divingboard, or some other task, "Look at me!" They wantsomeone whom they love to turn their face to them and seewhat they have accomplished. Zacchaeus climbed a tree toget a look at Jesus, but he also wanted Jesus to look at him.The Savior did look, and He is still looking to show His loveto His children.
Zacchaeus was the chief tax collector. Perhaps you knowhim as an elected official, football coach, teacher, doctor, dentist, or co-worker. You don't really know the person, butyou know what position or title they hold in society. Iwonder when was the last time someone said, "Zacchaeushow is your mom? I heard she has been in the hospital." Didanyone care that his youngest daughter was battlingepilepsy? I am speculating because the Bible doesn't saymuch about his personal life, but I know there was more tothis man than just collecting taxes, which had its own
problems. Working as a tax collector could be lucrative, butit certainly wasn't easy. Everyone in town hated you, andyou lived under constant stress working for the RomansEmpire, which had a reputation of executing the hired help.Leaders in the empire had even killed members of their ownfamily. While others saw just a tax collector, Jesus saw theman behind the position and sought to build a relationshipwith him by going to Zacchaeus' house for dinner.
Most of the characters in Scripture experience a call fromChrist either as a personal invitation or through the publicpreaching of Jesus. Others sought Jesus because of someaffliction in order to be healed. Zacchaeus was different. Hewas a successful business man. He had worked hard tomove up the success ladder and earned the title of chief. Hewas wealthy. The text seems to indicate that Zacchaeusoperated his business with integrity. Notice he said, "If Ihave cheated."
Zacchaeus does not appear to have any observable need, but he is curious about Jesus. Why? The Bible says God hasset eternity in our heart. God has placed in the soul of everyhuman being a desire to connect to the Creator. Some fightit, ignore it, and deny it, but the Scripture is clear. Humanbeings are spiritual beings and no amount of worldlysuccess or possessions can satisfy the deepest longing ofthe soul to know God.
An application we must make as a church and as individualfollowers of Christ is to keep that need at the forefront ofall we do. Lost people don't need our music, our wisdom, our nice facilities, or our great sermons. They need Jesus!Music, facilities, and preaching are wonderful tools if theyhelp people connect with Christ. "When will we realize thatpeople need the Lord?" Zacchaeus needed Jesus, and sodoes a lost and dark world.
We have examined Zacchaeus' physical identity, spiritualcuriosity, and now we will consider his supernatural destiny.A person's destiny is more than an end result or achieving agoal. Destiny is driving force that shapes and defines aperson's life. The story of Zacchaeus concludes with his lifebeing distinctly different after meeting Jesus.

PresiDeNT’s message
Dear Fellow Parishioners,
I hope your Christmas was wonderful, it is a blessed seasonwhere we show the love to others that Our Lord has givento us all, use that love, share that love. Part of that sharingis coming to church and being involved in your church. Weneed to see you, to share with you, to interact with you. Ithink we here at St. George will be better for it knowing youare part of things again. We can all say a small prayer thatyou will open your heart again to us, be part of our commu-nity once again and be better off for your efforts. The faithhas not changed, the choir is still beautiful, the incensesmells just as inspiring, the chandelier is just as breathtakingas when you first saw it, join and be a steward of St. Georgeadd your time and talents to those we already have and wecan all be better for it.
As we approach the New Year let our joint resolution be thatSt. George should and must be a part of our life and the lifeof our family. That we are your family and family alwayssticks together, does things together, helps each other in thetough times so that we can all enjoy the good times, to-gether. Lots of good times here lately so even as the Gospelsays and it’s the 11th hour you will be most welcomed justas if you were here in the 1st hour waiting for the doors toopen. Give us a try again and if you have been here with methank you from the bottom of my heart, let’s have a great2017 together.
I was very pleased yesterday to join Past President NikkiMoutsioulis as we jointly remembered the life of GeorgeDemos by awarding a scholarship in his memory to GeorgeTsirimokos for his many years of service on the altar. Georgereturned from college and was where you would expect himto be in the altar serving at the Divine Liturgy. His dedicationand love of community was something he learned from theexample set by George Demos, a man whose love of St.George had no equal. He was truly blessed by God and ded-icated his life to help make our community a little better. We all had a small story about George both at the presen-tation and afterward during coffee hour. He was one ofthose unforgettable people that made St. George what itwas, what it is, and I know he joined so many of our otherloved ones in heaven where I hope they are pleased withour efforts to follow their example and continue to make St.George the loving, vibrant community they wanted for usall. May his and their memories be truly eternal.
Fr. Michael had his minor surgery and is back with us going, going, going like the bunny in the commercials, please availyourself of his services, got an issue he’s the man to helpyou sort it out, want a visit, have a love one needing some
Jesus makes the bold declaration, "Salvation has come toyour house!" Zacchaeus got saved! We must be careful tounderstand that Zacchaeus did not purchase his salvationby giving money to the poor. His actions just reveal a lifetransformed by an encounter with Christ. After experiencingthe love of Christ, he became more concerned about othersthan splurging on selfish desires.
Another interesting part of this story is that Zacchaeus didnot change jobs. He was a tax collector before he met Christ, and he continued collecting taxes after he met Christ. Hisjob was the same, but destiny was different. He now usedhis job as an opportunity to give glory to God. You do nothave to become a vocational minister to follow Jesus withyou whole heart. The kingdom of God needs Christ-followers in the market place shining the light of the gospel.Zacchaeus' destiny included his salvation, his vocation, andhis determination, which serves as a legacy of inspiration toall who hear his story. He overcame several obstacles toencounter Christ. Zacchaeus had physical limitations; he wasshort. His peers criticized him, and the crowds blocked hisaccess to Jesus. Many in the crowd did not even knowZacchaeus was in the tree. Sometimes the offensive actionsof others stand in the way of the gospel, but other times itcan be the painful lack of recognition. Some people strugglewith being overlooked or ignored. They feel invisiblewondering if anyone knows they exist. Zacchaeus wasfinancially successful, which the Bible says makes it difficultfor one to see his need for Christ. Even with all theobstacles, Zacchaeus could not ignore the longing in his soulthat drove him into the presence of Christ. In order to reach the fruit of a tree, you must go out on alimb." That is what Zacchaeus did. The salvation he receivedis still available today. Follow his example by not allowinganything to prevent you from receiving all that God desiresfor your life.

The great teacher and invincible defender of the One, Holy,Catholic, and Apostolic Church, Saint Mark, was the off-spring and scion of the imperial city, Constantinople.Reared by most pious parents, and instructed in secularand spiritual wisdom, he became preeminent in both. SaintMark lived as an ascetic on the Prince's Islands and later inthe monastery of Saint George Magana in Constantinople. He passed through all the degrees of the priesthood, andwas finally advanced to the dignity of Archbishop and thelofty throne of the Metropolis of Ephesus. At the insistenceof Emperor John Paleologos, the Saint was sent to thecouncil of the Latins in Florence, to unite the churches thathad been divided for so many years. He astounded thepapal teachers with the divine wisdom of his words, andwas the only one who did not sign the blasphemous decreeof that false council. Because of this, the Holy Church ofChrist has ever honored this great man as a benefactor, teacher, sole defender, and invincible champion of theApostolic Confession. He reposed in 1443.

The TheoPhaNy / ePiPhaNy of our lorD aND savior Jesus ChrisT – JaNuary 6
About the beginning of our Lord's thirtieth year, John theForerunner, who was some six months older than Our Savioraccording to the flesh, and had lived in the wilderness sincehis childhood, received a command from God and came intothe parts of the Jordan, preaching the baptism of repentanceunto the remission of sins. Then our Savior also came fromGalilee to the Jordan, and sought and received baptismthough He was the Master and John was but a servant.Whereupon, there came to pass those marvelous deeds, great and beyond nature: the Heavens were opened, theSpirit descended in the form of a dove upon Him that wasbeing baptized and the voice was heard from the Heavenshearing witness that this was the beloved Son of God, nowbaptized as a man (Matt. 3:13-17; Mark 1:9-11; Luke 3:1-22).From these events the Divinity of the Lord Jesus Christ andthe great mystery of the Trinity were demonstrated. It is alsofrom this that the present feast is called "Theophany," thatis, the divine manifestation, God's appearance among men.On this venerable day the sacred mystery of Christian bap-tism was inaugurated; henceforth also began the savingpreaching of the Kingdom of the Heavens.
The Three hierarChs: Basil The greaT, gregory
The TheologiaN, aND JohN ChrysosTom
JaNuary 30
This common feast of these three teachers was instituted alittle before the year 1100, during the reign of the EmperorAlexis I Comnenus, because of a dispute and strife that aroseamong the notable and virtuous men of that time. Some ofthem preferred Basil, while others preferred Gregory, andyet others preferred John Chrysostom, quarreling amongthemselves over which of the three was the greatest. Fur-thermore, each party, in order to distinguish itself from theothers, assumed the name of its preferred Saint; hence, theycalled themselves Basilians, Gregorians, or Johannites. De-siring to bring an end to the contention, the three Saints ap-peared together to the saintly John Mavropous, a monk whohad been ordained Bishop of Euchaita, a city of Asia Minor, they revealed to him that the glory they have at the throneof God is equal, and told him to compose a common servicefor the three of them, which he did with great skill andbeauty. Saint John of Euchaita (celebrated Oct. 5) is also thecomposer of the Canon to the Guardian Angel, the Protectorof a Man's Life. In his old age, he retired from his episcopalsee and again took up the monastic life in a monastery inConstantinople. He reposed during the reign of the afore-mentioned Emperor Alexis Comnenus (1081-1118).

Every year, the St. John Chrysostom Oratorical Festival pro-vides our young people from grades 7-12 the opportunity toresearch a topic on the Orthodox Faith, prepare a speech onit, and deliver it before an audience.
We will be hosting the St. John Chrysostom Parish OratoricalFestival on a Sunday in February, the date to be determined. All of our children in grades 7 through 12 are eligible to takepart, in fact they are encouraged to participate. Please see Fa-ther as soon as possible to take part in this exciting youth min-istry program of our Church.
Introduced in 1983, the St. John Chrysostom Oratorical Festivalprovides Greek Orthodox teenagers the opportunity to writeand talk about their faith. The Oratorical Festival Program be-gins at the parish level and is divided into two divisions:
Junior Division for students in grades 7–9Senior Division for student in grades 10–12
The top speakers in the Junior and Senior Divisions advanceto the district level. Two finalists in each district division rep-resent the district at the Metropolis Oratorical Festival. Thetop speaker in each Metropolis Division is then selected toparticipate in the Archdiocese Finals, which is hosted by a dif-ferent Metropolis each year.
All eighteen finalists at the Archdiocese Finals participate ina weekend of activities, the highlight of which is the deliveryof their speeches on Saturday morning. The Oratorical FestivalScholarship Fund provides college scholarships to the topspeakers. In 2016, the top three speakers of each division re-ceived college scholarships of $2,000, $1,500 and $1,000. Thisyear, each Honorable Mention speaker was awarded $500.
Please be advised that Hellenic College in Brookline, MA is of-fering the St. John Chrysostom Scholarship, which provideseach first place speaker in the senior division from each parisha 100% tuition scholarship for their first year of study and upto 80% tuition for each succeeding year.
The topics for the 2017 festival year are:Junior Division (grades 7–9)
1. The opening petition of the Divine Liturgyis “In peace let us pray to the Lord.”
What is this peace, and why do we need it to begin our prayers?
2. St. John Chrysostom said, “Our alms are judged not bythe measure of our gifts, but by the largeness of our mind”
(Homily 52 on the Gospel of Matthew). Discuss how even small acts of kindnessand generosity can make a difference.
3. Discuss the role of bread and its symbolismin the Bible and the life of the Church.
4. The Orthodox Church venerates saintsand martyrs every day.
Talk about a saint whose life inspires you to be a better Orthodox Christian.
5. Explain why the Orthodox Church focuses more on the resurrection than it does on the passion and suffering of Christ.
senior Division (grades 10–12) 1. The gap between the rich and the poor in the
United States and worldwide is arguably wider than it hasever been. How should we as Orthodox Christians
address such terrible financial inequality?
2. Although many people diet for health or vanity, the discipline of fasting is found in many religious
traditions. What is the difference between dieting and fasting, and why is it important?
3. Psalms are an integral part of matins, vespers, and many other Church services.
Talk about a psalm that impacts or influences your life.
4. The Lord commanded us not to create idols (Exodus 20:4), yet people continue to do so.
Discuss the kinds of idols people makeor worship today and the response that an Orthodox
Christian should have when confronted by them.
5. Jesus said, “Render therefore to Caesar the thingsthat are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s”
(Matthew 22:21). When no political party represents genuine Christian teaching,
how does an Orthodox Christian navigate political conversations and make
political judgments?
