“Successful years aren’t the result of chance; they are the result of hard work and determination.”

It is my pleasure to share with you the successes related to the fiscal and academic year that concluded this past June. Successful years aren’t the result of chance; they are the result of hard work and determination. The 2010-11 school year had no shortage of hard-working volunteer leaders, all of whom exhibited the same character traits we strive to inspire in our students. Our students grow as citizens and leaders through a variety of ways and means. Whether as spiritual leaders in chapel, co-curricular leaders in one of the many student clubs or athletic teams offered, or leaders in community outreach, our students excel in exhibiting leadership that is compassionate and citizenship that is authentic. And those of us involved in daily life at St. George’s have the distinct pleasure of watching this student leadership blossom. Leadership role models surround our students, including the key volunteers who are the lifeblood of our school. This annual report is one of our opportunities to pay tribute to the leadership of our parents and other supporters. Whether as room/grade parent, library volunteer, or board member, such servant leadership provides the heartbeat of St. George’s and pushes our community forward. One leader who deserves special mention is Peter Schutt. Peter has served on the board for a total of

nine years, the last two as Board Chair. Recently, the National Wildlife Federation named him their National Volunteer of the Year and The Chickasaw Council of Boy Scouts of America honored him with their 2011 Distinguished Citizen Award. In May, Peter was awarded the St. George’s Medal, the highest honor the school can bestow on one of its own. Offering outstanding counsel to our trustees and administration over the past decade, Peter continues to shape our future priorities. This past year we received our first bequest from a retired educator who had no connection with the school but, nonetheless, was inspired by our pursuit of educational excellence. New leaders are emerging as well. Four other individuals stepped forward last spring to join our new planned giving society with estate intentions. Such commitments make it possible to plan for the school’s future. The following pages show the names of leaders who believe in the St. George’s experience. These named and anonymous gifts made professional development experiences possible for teachers, enriched student experiences, heightened critical learning experiences, and preserved and improved the school’s distinctive culture. Thank you for leading the way and inspiring our students to do the same.

Letter from the President

Sincerely,

William W. Taylor, School President

“As I finish my term as Board Chair, I am pleased to see that new leaders, future improvements, and upcoming enhancements are ahead.”Thanks to our varied supporters, St. George’s Independent School had a strong close to the 2010-11 fiscal year. Philanthropic efforts – from capital and annual giving to support for our Parents Association events – were successful and engaging. As Board Chair, I have seen many independent schools, colleges, and universities lose their stride during the recent economic cycle. I am glad to report that St. George’s is thriving as leadership and sharp focus propel the school forward. During my tenure as Board Chair, I have seen young people gain confidence by tackling fifth grade speeches, trying a new sports, or stretching to apply to colleges with a demanding curriculum. I count it a privilege to be one of the individuals who shakes our graduates’ hands at Commencement and to see first hand the culmination of their St. George’s experience. St. George’s is fortunate to have an abundance of strong leaders. The Board of Trustees is no exception. Our board is active, engaged, and far-thinking – all key components that are necessary to providing the type of education required for success in the 21st century. Ambitious goals are not foreign to St. George’s; we have embraced them for the last decade as we have given birth to and nurtured our one-school, three-campus educational model. As I finish my term as Board Chair, I am pleased to see that new leaders, future improvements, and upcoming enhancements are ahead. Our mission does not change, but we continue to re-calibrate and chart our course based on our commitment to a student-centered education that prepares students for college and beyond. Our accomplishments are possible because of leaders like you who chose to sacrifice to help the school reach beyond the status quo and bring ambitious dreams to fruition. Thank you.

“Our students work toward and strive for excellence. To ensure that we are providing every available resource to our students, faculty, and coaches, we ask for financial support above and beyond tuition. An Annual Fund gift is the first and most important gift we ask of every member of the St. George’s family.”

St. George’s Independent School would like to thank everyone who gave to the 2010-2011 Annual Fund. We grew in every area of giving—from the number of gifts to the number of donors.

Our average gift rose last year more than $120 from the year prior, in spite of a sluggish economy. Furthermore, alumni gifts more than doubled last year, making it our best year of giving for this group.

All contributions raised through the SGIS Annual Fund go directly into our operating budget to help fill the gap between tuition revenue and our operating expenses. These worthwhile investments help support all areas of the school—from educational enrichment to financial aid to day-to-day classroom programs.

Our volunteers worked tirelessly to help us raise more than $1.2 million in restricted and unrestricted gifts for St. George’s in 2010-2011. Chairs for the 2010-2011 Annual Fund were Priscilla and David DeGutis. They led a fantastic group of volunteers through a year of phone-a-thons, receptions, and mailings, helping us reach our goal.

Rob Fossett is President and Owner of Fossett Paving Company. He has been actively involved in the buildings and grounds activities at all of our campuses. Mr. Fossett is a member of the St. George’s Independent School 2011-2012 Board of Trustees. He and his wife Kelly have two children attending St. George’s: Parker ‘13, and Caroline ‘16.

“The one thing that has impressed us the most at St. George’s is how the teachers and coaches are not afraid to challenge our kids, to challenge all the students. They set the bar very high in the classrooms and on the athletic fields. ... And they teach, coach and instruct toward high standards, which instills confidence in our students. St. George’s students know that they will be able to ‘reach the bar,’ no matter how high it may be set.

“This prepares our children for college and beyond.”

Q: From your perspective as a parent, what gifts/talents of your children have been enhanced at SGIS? A: I appreciate SGIS’s emphasis on communication and public speaking skills. Throughout the Memphis community, I hear positive comments about St. George’s students being able to interact with adults politely and look them in the eye. Our children, Parker and Caroline, have developed more self-confidence from this preparation.

Q: Did you see yourself, in tenth grade, doing today (professionally) what you are doing? A: At age 16, I didn’t plan this far in advance. Back then, all I knew for certain was that I didn’t want a desk job. I preferred to work outside. Summer jobs and work after graduating from high school introduced me to the construction industry. I would have been a little surprised to know that, as an adult, I would not only own a construction company but also spend part of each day behind a desk. I believe my children are getting the type of education at St. George’s that will prepare them for a variety of careers and challenges once they step beyond college and enter into “the real world.”

Q: How are you “Experiencing More” at St. George’s? A: My wife and I, and our children, are experiencing more at St. George’s through the tremendous, unmatched sense of community that is found on our campuses. It really is like a family. That is the environment created here by the leadership, faculty, and staff. It feeds the students’ sense of responsibility to themselves and to others. It sets the school apart, in my opinion. And because of the family, community-oriented environment that exists at St. George’s, our kids are able to thrive.

Daphne Large is the CEO/President of Data Facts, Inc., a credit reporting and background screening company for mortgage lenders, employers, and consumers. She is a graduate of Memphis State University. Ms. Large is a member of the St. George’s Independent School 2011-2012 Board of Trustees. She and her husband Alan have two children, Trevor ‘12, and Heather ‘18, both of whom are active St. George’s students.

“The powerful phrase ‘Experience More’ is what inspires me most about St. George’s. Some may choose St. George’s because of its smaller class sizes, vigorous academics, challenging and educational field trips, engaging speakers or innovative lessons. Others may choose St. George’s because of its integrated technology, emphasis on character development or the outstanding faulty and administration that are dedicated to our children. Whatever the reason, the students at St. George’s truly do ‘experience more.’

Q: What is the school’s greatest accomplishment and what do you want to address in the years ahead? A: St. George’s greatest accomplishment is the realization of its mission to be both distinctive and inclusive. SGIS realizes this through the one-school, three-campus model with attributes not found in any other independent school in the United States. This model provides meaningful experiences in diversity and inclusivity for our students. As a lifelong Memphian, I know full well how divided Memphis can be. This school bridges those gaps and is truly changing lives. Our diverse student population learns not only with each other but from each other. In the years ahead, I want to make sure this model has long-term sustainability and support. It’s an exciting time at St. George’s and I invite you to be a part of our success.

Q: What’s something you never knew as a parent that you now know through service to the school? A: As a parent, you read a brochure, you review a web site, you take a tour, you ask questions of parents, and you “interview” the administration. You make the decision of where your children will attend and you hope it’s the right one. I can tell you with complete and total confidence my children LOVE St. George’s and that St. George’s is real. They talk the talk and walk the walk. Through serving on the Board of Trustees and other committees, I see it at every encounter. The administration and faculty truly care about our children as unique individuals; they dedicate themselves to unleashing our children’s potential and uncovering their gifts and talents. Every decision made is based upon what is best for our children, and they are laying the foundation for our children’s success in a 21st century world. I encourage you to get involved, experience this first hand, and join the leadership in helping make a difference!

Q: Were you ever grounded by your parents and if so, what was the punishment? A: I grew up in the 60’s and 70’s, and oh yes, I was grounded. Through the ages, I was always in trouble for climbing too high in the trees when I was younger or having a “smart mouth” when I was older. Since I loved to talk on the phone at night, this was what was usually taken away as I got older. I talked so much, they had to put in my own phone line and number. For those that know me, this probably is no surprise. It was awful when they would unplug it and confiscate the phone for a few days. But I survived. Positive, instructive experiences such as these inform me today as a parent and trustee as I observe the school’s commitment to character education.

Page 16: St. George’s Independent School 2010-2011 Annual Report

This was a year of excitement at St. George’s Independent School, and our parent community dove into the fray with spirit and enthusiasm to support and celebrate our extraordinarily distinctive community. Countless volunteers gave unselfishly of their time, whether it was to chair a committee, offer support in the classroom, or donate resources and time to the myriad of activities undertaken by our students, faculty, and families.

“I was inspired by the many ways in which I saw individuals, families, faculty, staff, and administration working together to show their commitment to our wonderful school,” Lori Walker, 2010-2011 Parents Association Executive Board President, said.

Every St. George’s parent is a member of the St. George’s Parents Association. The SGPA’s main goal is to support the school President and work in partnership with the school to meet the year’s challenges. Parents Association volunteers work in the library, help with class parties, plan new parent events, support our teachers and so much more. These men and women help create amazing scholastic experiences for our children.

In 2010, the seventh annual Fine Art Show and Sale was a great success. That show alone required more than 100 volunteers. Led by Angie McGuffee, the art show hosted more than 50 artists and sold more than $42,000 worth of artwork, with 30 percent of those funds going back into the arts programs at all campuses.

One St. George’s, the annual spring auction, was another huge success. Kathryn Pizzurro led a large team of volunteers in planning a terrific event at the Crescent Center. Items ranged from classroom projects to a Harley-Davidson. Everyone had a wonderful time bidding, dancing to the tunes provided by the video D.J. , and eating the great food. The auction raised more than $55,000. What a great event!

From Tough Enough, to the Talent Show, to admission support, our volunteers help in all aspects of the St. George’s experience. And as Ms. Walker points out, parent volunteers gain as much from the experiences of volunteering as they give.

“Working with the Parents Association allows you to be involved in the life of St. George’s,” Ms. Walker said. “ Volunteering is a great way to meet parents and get to know our teachers better. Being able to give the school a check for $65,000 last year was incredible. Thanks to the tireless hard work of all of our boards, we were able to give our school this substantial gift.”

SGIS Class of 2011

Page 38: St. George’s Independent School 2010-2011 Annual Report

“We are delighted that a member of the community was so taken by our vision of transformative education.

It is extraordinary for a young school such as St. George’s to announce such an ambitious funding initiative, and it is all

thanks to the generosity of this and several other key supporters.”

Trustees and administrators announced the formation of a new planned giving society in the spring of 2011, called the Clanlo Society. The announcement took place during a festive gathering of supporters at the school’s Collierville campus. Confirmed and intended gifts to the society total $3.2 million. The Clanlo Society was established to honor and recognize those individuals who have included St. George’s Independent School in their estate plans. Gifts may include bequests, life-income gifts, insurance policies, or retirement assets. These gifts represent an outstanding commitment to the school and help ensure that St. George’s maintains an excellent student body, talented faculty, and state-of-the-art facilities into the future. The inaugural gift to the society is from a deceased donor, Lois Claire Schwamm. Ms. Schwamm had no formal connection to St. George’s, yet she was inspired by the St. George’s educational model. The planned giving society will be called the Clanlo Society, in honor of a family-related name of Ms. Schwamm, a retired teacher who taught at Germantown High School and Central High School. “We are delighted that a member of the community was so taken by our vision of transformative

education,” Bill Taylor, School President, said. “It is unusual for a young school such as St. George’s to announce such an ambitious funding initiative, and it is all thanks to the generosity of this and several other key supporters.” Along with the cash gift to the Clanlo Society, Mrs. Schwamm also left a portrait of herself, pictured with her mother and sister, which is now on permanent display at the school’s Collierville campus. The funds from Mrs. Schwamm’s estate will be used for scholarships for deserving St. George’s students at all three of the school’s campuses. “As a private institution, St. George’s depends on the support of those who are closest to it,” Jay Philpott, Director of External Relations, said. “Whether giving an outright gift or a gift through a planned giving vehicle, we are deeply grateful for the support and generosity members from our community, along with those who are inspired by our mission, continue to show.” Inaugural members of the Clanlo Society are Mr. A. Robert Boelte Jr., Mr. and Mrs. Joseph M. DiNicolantonio, Dr. and Mrs. Robert J. Optican,Ms. Claire Schwamm, Mr. and Mrs. David B. Skudder Jr., and Ms. Megan Dunbar Turner.

2010-2011 Annual Giving Honor Roll of Donors

Each year, donors contribute non-capital funds for special purposes. While unrestricted giving is preferred because of the flexibility it gives the school to direct the money where it is most needed, we are nonetheless tremendously grateful to all those who supported the school last year with directed gifts.

THe SCHooL PHILoSoPHySt. George’s is a community of learners who believe that learning is a lifelong endeavor. It is a place to find not only knowledge, but also the skills necessary

for this lifetime of learning.

St. George’s believes in a holistic approach to education. Thus in preparing students for high academic challenges, it is a place where one also finds an emphasis on spiritual, physical, and social development.

It is a place where mind, body, and spirit grow as one.

St. George’s highly esteems truth and honor. An honor code supports an environment where compassion, respect, responsibility, self-discipline, perseverance, work, and faith thrive.

St. George’s values the development of individual character. Thus, it is a place for exploration and learning about others and oneself.

St. George’s believes in fostering positive relationships between girls and boys, women and men. We value the coeducational nature of our school and

provide ample opportunities for both male and female students, faculty, and administrators to excel.

St. George’s believes that students have multiple talents and abilities. It is a place where students’ unique gifts are recognized and nurtured and

doors are opened to diverse fields of expression, creativity, and appreciation through a curriculum of core subject areas and varied co-curricular programs.

As a school founded in the Episcopal tradition, St. George’s welcomes and respects all religious, racial, national, and ethnic backgrounds.

It is a place that acknowledges the dignity of each child.

St. George’s believes in the mutual support of home, school, and community in the development of young women and men.

St. George’s endeavors to create and provide collaborative opportunities to enrich the educational development of its students and its own role as a part of the greater community. Likewise, civic service is a prominent element of our

educational program.

St. George’s also believes it must take a leadership role in the conservation of environmental resources. As good stewards of these resources, St. George’s

will uphold the principles of sustainable design and continue its history of environmental education to promote these values within its student body.

St. George’s believes in preparing young women and men to seize their futures with confidence and passion as they go forward to

make meaningful contributions to our community and the world.
