PASTORAL LETTER PANCAKES THEN FASTING… HERE COMES LENT!
Have you noticed that ‘Hot Cross Buns’ are already in the
supermarkets? Easter comes early this year, April 1st, so that
means that Shrove Tuesday, Ash Wednesday (February 14th) and
Lent come early too. As the ‘purple’ season of Advent prepares us for
Christmas, so the season of Lent (also purple!) prepares us for Passiontide and Easter. The Lenten disciplines, in traditional
language, are prayer, fasting, study and almsgiving and, here in the
United Benefice of Shipbourne with Plaxtol, we are planning to give
time to all of these.
Fasting is not about eating nothing - it’s about eating less
intentionally. If we get a grumbling or a rumbling tummy, we can
use it as a trigger to pray more, giving thanks for our food. We hope
to arrange some simple lunches when we get together to share a bite
to eat, to give what we might normally spend on a meal for a worthy
cause, and to share simple midday prayers. This links well with both the produce at the Farmer’s Market at Shipbourne and the
new facilities at Plaxtol, and suggests a Thursday, ‘week-about’.
Study. I am recommending a Lent Book for the benefice, namely
‘The Wounded Healer’ by the popular spiritual writer Henri Nouwen, and I hope to convene daytime and evening groups each Wednesday
in Lent, in which we will read and discuss the book together,
prayerfully. My hope is that this will provide fresh and relevant
insights into the suffering, death and resurrection of Christ in time
for Passiontide and Easter, but also stimulate our thinking about
the on-going ministry of prayer and healing in the life of our benefice. A locally run short course from the Diocese of Rochester
would be an obvious next step, and this would effectively authorise
people to undertake this ministry under my leadership and
supervision.
Almsgiving is an old-fashioned word for charitable giving. There is a
constant nag in the gospels about the poor, who are always with us.
Both churches are committed to give 10% of parish income, a
significant proportion of which goes to support the community work
of All Saints’, Chatham, a parish far less advantaged than our own.
I am hoping that there will be a small, that will review, catch up with, pray for, and make any fresh recommendations to PCCs for
the parishes’ charitable giving.
So fasting, study and almsgiving can all be undertaken prayerfully.
Or put in another way, these Lenten disciplines can help us to align
our imperfect love with the perfect love of God, and our imperfect
wills with the perfect will of God. We want our groups to be open
and inclusive; all are invited to travel the Way of the Cross and to follow in the footsteps of Christ. Peter Hayler Rector
DEANERY SYNOD MEETING The meeting will be held on Tuesday 6th February at Plaxtol Church, TN15 0QB at 8 pm. The speaker will be Billy-Jo O’Leary,
Kent Project Co-ordinator for Home for Good who will speak
about the diocese’s partnership project with Homes for Good which
aims to find a home for every child in care who needs one. Billy-Jo
is a care leaver and an LLM within the diocese.
Coffee will be served following the talk and then non-Synod
members will be free to leave.

For 8-11 year olds Scripture Union Long Barn Camps each a week long Sunday-Saturday weeks starting 22 and 29 July, 5 and 12 Aug. Plaxtol has had a long association with these camps and in past years many from Plaxtol have enjoyed the excitement. “Long Barn is a magical time. The camps are held in a meadow between Plaxtol and Hadlow. The youngsters sleep in tents. Besides Christian teaching they learn woodland crafts, outdoor games, log fires, songs – it’s “Swallows and Amazons” personified.”

VOCE SACRI - LENTEN REFLECTION I have set up a new choir called Voce Sacri consisting of 16 voices
and without a conductor.
We will be giving our first concert in St Peter & St Paul Church, Edenbridge on Saturday 24th March 2018 at 7pm – 8.15pm with
refreshments after. Compline will be sung by the church choir and
parishioners at 9pm in the church for those that wish to stay on for
it.
The music, suitable for the period of Lent, will include two versions of The Beatitudes by Arvo Pärt and Paul Stetsenko, Lotti’s
Magnificat, Tomás Vittoria’s Alma Redemptoris Mater á 8 and Salve
Regina, and Tallis’ Loquebantur variis linguis.
Admission free with retiring collection to cover basic choir expenses and the remainder going to the church. Unreserved seating – just

SHIPBOURNE SCHOOL NEWS In January we welcomed a new member of staff, from Scotland, into
Tinley class. This term has brought the excitement of cooking
breakfast at the Chaser using produce purchased at the Farmers Market for pupils in years 5 and 6. In addition, the choir will have
the marvellous experience of, once again, being part of the Young
Voices concert at the O2 arena. And finally all the school will enjoy
participating in a circus skills workshop just before the half-term
break from February 9th.
After school clubs are extremely popular and include a board games
and puzzles club, which helps the children develop skills in
numeracy, strategy and dexterity. And some of the school’s netball
team will be training at Kent College with expert coaches on hand to

TRAFFIC CONGESTION and AIR QUALITY
Wouldn't you know it, after years of not getting Government to listen to our concerns about local traffic, along come two Highway consultations at the same time. This is a crucial time for pushing J5 Slips at Sevenoaks as the best way to get national traffic out of our villages, and onto the Motorway network, reducing congestion and pollution. We now have our MP Tom Tugendhat pushing at the highest levels in Government, let us try to generate a flood of letters that will give him that extra bit of clout. If everyone that is concerned wrote just a short note, that would have a huge effect. It need only be something as short as this: "For years Borough Green has suffered from horrendous traffic congestion and air pollution because national traffic has to come through our villages because the junction between the A21/M25/M26 at Sevenoaks was never completed. A few hundred yards of slip roads to complete this major junction and all that through traffic could bypass East Sevenoaks, Seal, Borough Green Wrotham and Platt on the M26" (but don't copy it word for word, make your own edits) That is all it needs, sent to both addresses, either by email or written letter, or via the links on all our local websites. The real penny pinchers could put both in the same envelope! The Leader of the Local Government Associations said "Borough Green is trouble on steroids", let us show the Government just how much trouble we can cause.

SHIPBOURNE FARMERS’ MARKET As we move into February, the wintery days are lengthening and
new growth is starting to make an appearance on frosted bough. It’s a great time of year to get out of the house, browse and shop at the
local Farmers’ Market, catch-up with friends over a warming cup of
coffee and stockup on the best of the Winter season’s produce. Our
local farmers and food producers need your support at this time of
year even more than ever.
Last year the footfall (i.e. visitors !) rose and we recorded the
highest number of since 2012 so hopefully we will continue this
upward trend. We realise that Thursday morning does not suit
many of you but unfortunately, being a relatively small market, we
could not attract stallholders to come on a Saturday. However, we are investigating other ways of enabling more of you to shop at the
market. One way in particular is a ‘Click and Collect’ system i.e. we
create an online version of the market, you order (and pay on line)
and we then deliver (on a Thursday) to various convenient collection
points in nearby villages. our stallholders. We are in the process of
finding funds so watch this space !!
There’s an abundance great fish on the fishmongers stalls. Colder
seas attract lemon sole, halibut, skate, turbot and monkfish close to
our shores, and shellfish fans should keep an eye out for clams,
mussels, oysters and cockles. (If you are a fan of scallops don’t miss
Rye Bay Scallop Week, which this year kicks off on Saturday 24th February (www.scallop.org.uk)). Try them wrapped in local streaky
bacon and baked or with cooked on a griddle with slices of black
pudding or chorizo. They’re also delicious pan-fried and serve on a
creamy puree of seasonal cauliflower.
For meat eaters, game is again an excellent choice for seasonal
healthy eating. It is lean, full of flavour and is best enjoyed griddled,
quickly stir-fried or in a meaty stew (see recipe). Venison, guinea
fowl, wood pigeon, pheasant and partridge are all good in February,
while the comfort eaters amongst you might try mutton for its rich
taste or rare breed pork.
Serve your meat with cabbages and brassicas, you’ll find them at
their freshest and crunchiest at this time of year. Savoy cabbage,
cauliflower, kale, sprouts, sprout tops and purple sprouting broccoli
all work perfectly in stir fries and curries, or perhaps serve them simply shredded and steamed tossed with a little seasoning and a
dash of cold pressed rapeseed oil. Main crop potatoes, Jerusalem
artichokes, parsnips and turnips provide the starch that keeps us
going in the cold so mash them together with a little seasoning and
butter as a side to your game dishes.
Local fruit is sparse but there are still apples to be enjoyed – storing
varieties keep well until April so make sure to go on buying local when you see them. We experienced a strong growing season last
year and apples are still sweet and fragrant. Early forced rhubarb
could well make an appearance towards the end of the month –
wonderful in traditional crumbles, and pies, but it also goes well
with rich flavoured meat and fish so serve a rhubarb sauce with grilled mackerel and slow cooked belly pork.

COOKERY CORNER VENISON CASSEROLE
There are few more comforting dishes than a winter casserole. This
one is full of flavour, warming and fragrant. It smells wonderful
while it is cooking and everyone will linger in the kitchen! If you
have never quite got around to cooking game, venison is lean tender
and healthy, and this easy casserole is the perfect dish to start with. You will find almost all the ingredients in your local Farmers Market
Serves 4
3 table spoons of rape seed oil
1 pack diced venison 350-400gms
1 large carrot chopped
1 large onion chopped
Finely chopped leaves of a large sprig of Rosemary
4 tablespoons of tomato puree

Seasoning to taste
1. Brown the venison in batches in the oil for about 5 minutes,
cutting the pieces smaller if necessary and then transfer to a
heavy casserole dish.
2. Cook the carrot and onion in the same pan for 3 minutes
until starting to soften then add the rosemary and tomato
puree. Cook for a further 2 minutes and add to the meat in
the casserole
3. Pour over the wine and the stock and bring to the boil before reducing the heat to a simmer. Cook for about 1 ½ hours
stirring occasionally. Remove the lid and cook for a further
½ hour to reduce the liquid.
4. Serve with mashed potatoes and your choice of seasonal greens or root vegetables.
SHIPBOURNE WI After the Christmas festivities, the first meeting of the new year took
place on Wednesday 10 January. We were able to discuss events
planned for 2018, as well as considering a new list of speakers. Tea
followed with a chat and catch up on news.
The next committee meeting will take place on February 7th, and we
are looking forward to the main meeting on 14th February when
Lynne and Peter Flower will talk to us about Barn Owls.
