Sand Island Shuttle News

The city of St. Helens has for the second year decided not to operate the shuttle service to Sand Island due to funding issues. While finding the money needed to operated the shuttle during the summer months is difficult in this economy, the larger questions of improving the park facilities and upkeep are yet to be decided. Crowds can overwhelm the available bathrooms and campsites on busy weekends. Access for law enforcement and Emergency Services is also questionable as no quick response vessel is available for transporting personnel to the island in an emergency. As there are those who will take advantage of the lack of enforcement, other prob-lems will and have occurred. There have also been some question of the appropriateness of the type of boat that the city has purchased to ferry people to the island. While many of these issues are already present with the boaters that use the island, it is irresponsible to introduce even more people to the island while not being able to provide basic services to these visitors. There have been many issues raised concerning the service that St. Helens wishes to provide, with some boaters not wanting to share the island with non-boaters while other boaters are glad to see more people enjoy this wonderful destination. Many local business owners also hope that regular service to the island will increase tourism in the old town area. Having taken the shuttle a couple times I found that people were very pleased with the ability to visit the only city park not normally accessible to the non-boating public. The problem as I see it is that the city is trying to take a good idea and do it on the cheap. Hopefully, as they continue to make plans to restore this short-lived service, these issues will be given the resources needed to provide a safe, reliable and popular activity.

CRYA OPENING DAY HOST A VETERANS FAMILY

The member clubs of CRYA are once again looking to host Veterans and their families on Opening Day May 1st, 2010. This is in cooperation with ‘Blue Star Moms of the Pacific Northwest’, the NW chapter of the national ‘Gold Star Moms’ organization who support veterans and their families. If you are considering attend-ing this years opening day in Portland you might consider hosting the family of a local veteran. By ‘hosting’ I would expect that the boater would arrange a meeting location and include the family in the boater’s club activities for the day, ie; breakfast, flag ceremony, the parade itself and any ‘after parade’ event. This is a great opportunity for us to provide support to our veteran’s families in a small way. We had a great turnout last year and I expect that there will be more vets involved this year. I commend all skippers who volunteered in 2009. Let's again show them that we are grateful for their service and sacrifice.Because Opening Day is not far off, we need to act with the utmost urgency. I would like to have your commit-ments in hand as soon as possible so we can begin the match-up process. We will accept more commitments later but need action NOW to insure that it happens. Contact me ASAP with commitments or any questions you might have.Thank you for your consideration for these very deserving families.

Sponsors are being lined up and activities planned for Saturday night after race. Volunteers will be needed for hosts as well as possibly race committee and safety boat crew. Or maybe you would be more interested in entering your sailboat in the races to be held on Saturday the 26th of June and Sunday the 27th. We are currently planning on having PHRF divisions as well as possibly one design classes should we get enough registered. Are you a PRO or know of someone who is that would like to be involved with this race? Contact Herb Olsen, Dave Branch or Donald Maywald and let us know.Current schedule includes:- Saturday the 26th; Racing starts at 1300 with 2 short races finished off by a long distance race, depending on wind and weather. After race activities will include beer and snacks, door prizes and more. Dinner on Saturday night will be left to the participants to find at one of the restaurants located in old town. We hope to have dis-count coupons available to provide to the crews and their family or friends. - Sunday the 27th; The racing will start early as the wind fills in, with 2 races held before the awardsceremony at 1300, giving the crews plenty of time to return to Portland. At the awards ceremony the captain or crew member representing the winning boat in each division will be presented a certificate for a St. Helens Sailing Weekend jacket with their division win. Other awards may be presented for 2nd and 3rd place finishes in each division depending on the number of boats in the division.

Do you know where these pictures were taken? Some of you who have more experience cruising around the Columbia River and its many bays and tributaries may have been here a time or two. One clue, it is the last port on the Columbia before you head out to the cross the bar.
