News & Views September Edition

You are invited to A Retreat Day to discover Jesus in a new Way

September 24, 2016 10:00 AM to 2:30 PM

St. Hugh Episcopal Church in Allyn

You are invited to join The Rev. Patricia Rome Robertson for a day in which you will be chal-

lenged and encouraged to discover new ways of understanding who Jesus is. Patricia is a retired

priest of our Diocese who, when she was Rector of St. Stephen’s Church in Seattle, founded a

Contemplative Wisdom Community of folks from within and outside the parish who gathered to

learn, pray and engage in contemplative practices designed to transform understanding and life

as an evolving Christian. Today she serves as the Assistant for Contemplative Ministries at St.

Barnabas on Bainbridge Island.

From the book jacket of The Wisdom Jesus by Cynthia Bourgeault:

If you put aside what you think you know about Jesus and approach the Gospels as though

for the first time, something remarkable happens: Jesus emerges as a teacher of the transfor-

mation of consciousness. Cynthia Bourgeault is a masterful guide to Jesus’ vision and to the

traditional contemplative practices you can use to experience the heart of his teaching for

yourself.

The day will include Centering Prayer, Chanting, references to the Gospel of Thomas, walking

the labyrinth and looking at central doctrines of Incarnation, Passion and Resurrection in a

new way.

We will gather for coffee at 9:30. Please bring a sack lunch. Beverages will be provided.

Please sign up in the narthex if you plan on attending. No registration fee.

St. Hugh Property Use Task Force Help us establish a “St. Hugh Property Use Plan” for the future. We were recently in

dialog with the Episcopal Retirement Community (ERC) as they explored a possible site

for a new Retirement / Independent Living facility. They own and manage two facilities

now: Canterbury Manor in Bremerton; St. Andrews Place in Port Angeles. Our three lots

above our church did not fit their plans this year but they will keep us in their future

plans. I believe we could have been better prepared to describe Lakeland Village, the

Allyn and the Grapeview areas, and our St. Hugh Community.

We will also look at the St. Hugh building use and potential future expansion: space for

fellowship, receptions, hosting meetings, classes, community organizations, etc.

The original concept design plan included a second building to the South. When our

property was purchased, it consisted of 11 acres. It was subdivided into a 5-acre parcel on

which we built the church and three 2-acre parcel that are wooded and to the west of our

church.

Possible Task Objectives:

1. Study the original building design plans.

2. Walk the current property and mark the corner of the lots.

3. Perform a need assessment for the use of a possible expansion.

4. Visit other churches that have created expansion plans.

5. Develop a possible time line and conceptual design ideas.

6. Communicate to the St. Hugh Family, Diocese and ERC Board the results of our

planning.

If you would like to join me in October at an initial gathering to discuss this interesting

project, please contact me.

NEWS from ECW

FIRST HOLIDAY BAZAAR MEETING This initial meeting on Aug. 24th was held at the Home of Pat Yingling. Chairs Pat and Karen Moore served a lovely selection of finger food, and a choice of beverag-es including wine - to eleven of us. Those attending were: Pat, Karen, Jennifer, Sunny, Jinx, Donna, Linda N., JoAnna, Lois, Linda P., and Vicki. What an enthusiastic group! All had a great time outside on the beautiful deck! Lots of 'show & tell' to discuss....good ideas for pro-jects! We discussed how we can liven up the annual event, perhaps even naming it the HOLIDAY COUNTRY BAZAAR. The event covers more than just Christmas, it includes all the other fall celebrations, as well. Emphasis will be on the 'Country Theme' with displays, and a table for home canned items, which looks to be full of peaches, pepper jellies, relish, marmalade and more. Christmas tree with donations from merchants decorating it will be NEW, basket of ALL sports' teams items and memorabilia priced separately was discussed. Scones will be sold and sign-up for bags of 'set up' ingredients will be available soon. We will provide the standard recipe if you need a copy. Ideas for inclusion in Silent Auction should be given to Pat and Karen. The thought is to have a limit, maybe 8, of really great items. We need a chairman for this, and for several other areas. We will, a always, have a Linen Table, which is popular. Donna will again do the living 'paper whites', but needs help finding little decorative glass or stones to add the finishing touch to each - also, look for sale prices on bulbs to be used by her. Bring unwanted pie dishes to the next meeting, also 8" jelly jars to JoAnna, there are 'work parties' to sign up for and we encourage ALL our Ladies to attend the next official ECW meeting on September 12th. Linda Peters, V.Pres.. wants ideas for the AGENDA of that meeting in as soon as possible. [email protected] or 646-528-6685
