St Ignatius Parish Discernment Process: Week #1 Review Last Sunday over 150 parishioners gathered to begin the process of discernment. The goal of this parish discernment process is to develop a concrete proposal for the mission/purpose of St Ignatius church by December, 2019. This proposal would layout a comprehensive model of how St Ignatius envisions its presence in the Rogers Park community. The point of the process is to develop content and ideas for a new church mission and to build relationships that will provide the human resources to carry forward this new vision. The feedback I received after the session was hopeful about the process.

St Ignatius undertakes this process in order to prepare for the parish’s participation in the Archdiocese’s process Renew My Church which will begin for us next February. The Archdiocese is facing the reality of church in transition. The following statistics concretely describe the reality we as Catholics are facing: • Mass attendance in the archdiocese has decreased by 27% over the past 20 years • 85% of children confirmed stop practicing their faith by age 21 • Number of parishes in 2018: 336. Projected number of parishes by 2030: 240

Responding to this reality the Renew My Church process is to spiritually “reencounter Jesus Christ as disciples and parish communities” and structurally to “ensure our parishes have adequate resources for vitality.” Our parish has been grouped with St Gertrude, St Jerome and St Gregory parishes to discern how the Catholic Church will serve the Roger Park/Edgewater community. Prior to us engaging in this formal process, the Parish Pastoral Council decided to be proactive in thinking through what vision we could bring to the Renew My Church process. To this end below are some of the possible futures that the parish would be facing in our Renew My Church group:

1. Parishioners recommend the closure of the parish. The buildings’ status is determined by the Archdiocese.

Proceso de discernimiento de la parroquia de San Ignacio: Revisión de la semana n. ° 1 El domingo pasado, más de 150 feligreses se reunieron para comenzar el proceso de discernimiento. El objetivo de este proceso de discernimiento parroquial es desarrollar una propuesta concreta para la misión / propósito de la iglesia de San Ignacio para diciembre de 2019. Esta propuesta diseñaría un modelo integral de cómo San Ignacio imagina su presencia en la comunidad de Rogers Park. Nuestra parroquia se ha agrupado con St Gertrude, St Jerome y St Gregory parroquias para discernir cómo la Iglesia Católica servirá a la comunidad Roger Park / Edgewater. Antes de participar en este proceso formal, el Consejo Pastoral Parroquial decidió ser proactivo al pensar en qué visión podríamos aportar al proceso de Renovar Mi Iglesia.

2. A new parish is formed with the merging of two or three parishes in the area. This would include the ministries to existing devotional shrines at St Ignatius. (Our Lord of the Miracles, Our Lady of the Clouds and Our Lady of Guadalupe.)

3. In conjunction with Loyola University and the local Jesuit community, the parish creates a social mission center. The center would develop initiatives that would reflect the needs and potential of Rogers Park. This would serve the needs of our economically, culturally, and religiously diverse community. (e.g., spiritual, educational, legal, medical, and psychological needs etc.…) It is the Parish Council’s hope that over the next six weeks we will learn and then discern what the Holy Spirit may be calling St Ignatius to become. We ended the first session by asking ourselves: 1) What do you need to know or understand to make an informed decision about the parish’s future? 2) What information should be provided over the next two months? We collected from the parishioners who participated in the session their written responses of ideas and questions. This Sunday for Discernment Session #2 we will learn about the Rogers Park neighborhood both historically and today. Who are the people living in Rogers Park? 2019 HUNGER WALK IS HISTORY Last Saturday was a gorgeous day for the annual Hunger Walk, it was bright with a soft wind blowing over the lake. The TEAM IGNATIUS traveled by bus to Jackson Park to join with over 15,000 others to fight hunger in our communities. Thank you! To all who got up early on Saturday and were part of our team. Whether this was your first walk or your 30th walk your efforts were appreciated and will make a difference to the Rogers Park community. Thank you! To those who pledged. Your donations will be put to good use. The funds we raise will help us provide fresh fruits, vegetables, milk, eggs, meat and shelf staple basics for our families. The Greater Chicago Food Depository helps us provide the items for our holiday baskets. Without your generosity it would be difficult to provide such a wide variety of food. A Novena for Healing and Atonement

An initiative of Catholic laity of Vicariate II to unite the faithful in addressing the issue of clergy sexual abuse, through prayer for healing, atonement, and for guidance of the Holy Spirit. Nine evenings of prayer and reflection will be hosted by the parishes below to give us an opportunity to walk together in the Spirit toward reparation, forgiveness and healing. GLENOLA CLUB SUNDAY Today the Glenola Club will honor their living and deceased members at the 9:00 am Mass. RELIGIOUS EDUCATION Religious Education classes will begin on Saturday, September 21 at 10:00 am. Parents and children should meet in the church. At that time children will be given their teacher and classroom assignments. Parents will also receive the schedule for the year. Classes will be dismissed at noon. All tuition must be paid by September 28, 2019.

The Brotherhood of the Lord of the Miracles invite you to their spiritual retreat commemorating the 40th Anniversary of its formation at St. Ignatius.
