Even though we are starting the season of Ordinary Time, this Sunday and next Sunday are two distinct celebra- tions. This article is about that first feast. “Today we contemplate the fullest mystery of God: the God who set all of life into motion with a word; the God who created us and our world out of a love so perfect and complete that we cannot begin to un- derstand it; the God who continues to re-create us and our world in the gift of his Son, the very love of God made human and real for us. Out of that same mysterious love, God calls us back again and again when we stray, not as the lowly objects he created, but as a compassionate Parent welcoming back and unconditionally loving his children. God invites us into a relationship with him not based on fear and judgment but centered in love, mercy and trust. Today’s celebration of the Trinity confronts us with our response to God’s invitation and our worthiness to be called God’s children. The Solemnity of the trinity helps us reflect on the myriad ways in which the God we seek as Christians, reveals himself to us in all the divine refulgence. Today we focus on God as the Father, the Creator of all life, including our very selves; as Son, the Redeemer, who teaches us the unfathomable love of God; as Spirit, the love of God that creates and enables us to break out of the isolation that entraps us enabling us to become an even better humanity that mirrors the Trinity. May this solemnity of the Trinity open our eyes, our senses and our consciousness to behold God’s presence in our midst in real and holy ways and to realize our simple but profound identity as children of God whom, as Father, Son and Spirit, we are to proclaim and teach and this great Triune God will always be with us.”** ** Abbot Patrick Moore, OSB Assumption Abbey, Richardton, ND Our series on American Saints will resume in a couple of weeks.
