A letter from Father John to John Paul I (Albino Luciani): The Joy of Humility You were elected Pope on August 26, 1978 and died only 33 days later. It was

one of the shortest pontificates in the history of the Church. Your brief reign was

sandwiched in between two long pontificates (Paul VI and John Paul II). The

Cardinal who gave the homily at your funeral said two profound things about you:

that it only took you one month to conquer the hearts of the people; and that your

appearance on the world stage, ending as nearly as it begun, was still like a meteor

of light shining through a dark world. And while I was not yet born when you lived

and died, I have to be honest, you have captured my imagination. Perhaps it was

hearing about your smile that caught my attention. People described you as having

the “smile of God”. What was behind that smile? How in one month did you conquer

the heart of the world? The way you lived your life gives some insight, I think. You

grew up poor, with very few material possessions. There were times in your childhood

when you did not have enough to eat. Even then, there is the story of how you

received a piece of white bread for something you did, and instead of devouring it

yourself, you ran it home to your brother, and gave it to him. You were a happy child,

and your humility was apparent from a young age. Once you grew older, you went to

the seminary, and excelled academically. You were so gifted that they asked you to

write brief articles for the bulletins. Here I am trying to do the same thing, but without

all your natural gifts! With your keen mind, you could take even the most complicated

of subjects and make them accessible to everyone, child and adult alike. Eventually,

you would write a collection of letters to famous people (in the style of this letter),

and you would use these letters to teach a lesson. To me, the lesson of your life is

summed up in the motto you took as a bishop, and also is in the first sentence of

our first reading this Sunday: Humility. Humility allows us to focus outwardly, to live

an other-centered life. This is no easy task for us, who are frustrated by sin, which

turns us into ourselves, ultimately robbing us of the happiness that so clearly radiated

in your life. Our culture does not make it any easier today, then it did over 40 years

ago when you were still alive. There is a push to put ourselves first, through a kind

of radical individualism. Self-focus was not what put the smile on your face, but

humility. Thank you for your example of humility that can lead to such great joy.

I think your humble prayer is one that we could say each day: “Lord, may you keep

your hand over my head, but most importantly, help me to keep my head under your

hand.”

An admirer, and one who asks for your prayers,

Fr. John N. Hay
