A Message from Mother Vanessa~

Greetings to you from God and our Savior, Jesus Christ,

St. Paul begins his epistles with such a greeting. He follows it by telling the recipient congregation of his gratitude and thanksgivings to God for their faith and their love. As I continue the preparations for my Sab-batical July 3 through September 4, I am more keenly aware of the love that flows from the Christians here at St. James. You are a parish known by the clergy that served you, and by neighboring churches, as an authentic community of Jesus followers possessed of God’s compassion. Grace flows from our leadership and your devotion to Christ expressed in worship, welcome and acts of mercy is notable. One of our more recent wor-shippers, who has been forced to the margins in our society his entire young life told me, “This is the first church I’m thinking of coming to again; you’re the first people who actually care.” When you live with a loving heart, that love will shine through. I look forward to hearing Mother Marie’s experience of your care this summer. Her biography is below.

On Sabbatical I will travel to a group working with academics on the study of women clergy’s experience of opportunity and barriers to their ministry, espe-cially to executive roles: Rector, Dean, Bishop or Ministry head. Two other aspects are to work with my husband, Mark Clark - and author, on a joint book project drawing on his background as a film historian and critic and mine as a parish priest. Finally, every cleric’s sabbatical is best used for contemplative time with God. I will be spending an extended retreat with the Community of the Transfiguration in Glendale, Ohio with whom I am a Priest Associate.

Your prayers for my refreshment of ministry would be greatly appreciated. I will be praying for you.

Biography of The Rev. Marie Phillips… Marie Phillips, B.A., M. Div. grew up in the Mid-West and loves living near

Lake Erie with her wife of nineteen years, Kris!, who is a Social Worker for

Lake County Council on Aging. Marie, ordained for 25+ years, has served par-

ishes in Massachuse(s, Maryland and Ohio. She developed the pastoral care

department for Hospice of St. Mary’s, Maryland and facilitated educa!on in

spiritual care for staff and interns at Hospice of the Western Reserve where

she served as chaplain for the pediatric and AIDs teams. Marie was the rector

of Epiphany Euclid, Ohio for eight and a half years; she served on the Diocesan

Staff as the Interim Canon for Mission; Priest-in-Charge at Christ Church, Hud-

Update on National Workshop on Christian Unity: Minneapolis, MN May 1-4, 2017

I a(ended the event officially as the Diocesan Ecumenical and Interfaith Officer. It was an enriching !me

of frank, loving and hard discussions around ecumenical rela!onships. One workshop allowed us to hear

case studies from three parishes on stewardship of Crea!on ac!vi!es that led to stronger, more populat-

ed parish life. I believe 2 of their ideas could be implemented in Painesville through St. James in 2018. I

strengthened my understanding of ELCA, Roman Catholic and Episcopal rela!onships. I made direct con-

nec!ons with my peers in the ELCA northern synods, UMC East Conference and Episcopal Diocese of

Southern Ohio. This con!nues to inform my work and rela!onships in Lake County through our ecumeni-

cal ministries.

Worship Notes: Over the course of St. James’ 193 years the conventions of our worship have needed to change with our changing context. The Book of Common Prayer and Hymnal have had sev-eral iterations. Our use of vestments, worship objects and decor have shifted through-out the decades. We’ve even had four different buildings: 1824 we worshipped in homes, 1834 a wooden structure at our current address, 1867 in our current Church and our Children’s Chapel in 1887. All the while, the heart of our worship has never wavered: to “unite ourselves with others to acknowledge the holiness of God, to hear God’s Word, to offer prayer, and to celebrate the sacraments (BCP p.857).”

This summer, we will shift our worship to the Chapel on June 18. We will not shift the time of the later service. Our later service will remain at 10:30 AM, so that the families and individuals who are unable to come in the summer because of the time shift will have an opportunity to worship. Also, this will eliminate guests and visitors from missing sum-mer services. The 8 AM Rite I service remains the same, for any who prefer an early start to a summer Sunday.

I look forward to seeing you. Mother Vanessa +

St. James Family Picnic and Guided Hike – Rain, rain, go away! The morning of our picnic was

met with a downpour even before our church services ended, but thirty-three people braved

the deluge and headed for the Lake Metroparks/Lake Erie Bluffs reserva!on in Perry in spite

of the nasty downpour. Our hosts, Hannah and Gary Fairbanks, had the foresight to reserve

the beau!ful, enclosed picnic shelter, complete with a wood-burning fireplace to keep us

warm and cozy. Although we did cancel our guided hike (hopefully we will reschedule that

later), the weather cleared enough mid-aDernoon for some independent explora!on and hik-

ing to the nearby observa!on tower. We had a great lunch of crispy fried chicken, a spread of

delicious side dishes and lots of sweet desserts. Hannah and Gary provided plenty of games

and ac!vi!es to keep us busy indoors, including decora!ng flower pots and plan!ng flowers in

them and a game of guessing the number of Hershey kisses in a watering can.

Congratula!ons to the winners: Hilary Bixler and Heidi Benner! As a special treat, Jessica and

Tim Cobb brought their popcorn machine and treated us all to fresh, hot, bu(ery popcorn. It

was delicious! Thank you Hannah and Gary for another great fellowship event!

Family Movie Night – On Saturday, June 17, 2017, Tim and Jessica Cobb are hos!ng a family

movie night to view the Disney favorite Moana. Popcorn and drinks will be provided

along with some fruit to go with our Hawaiian theme. The event is free and open to kids

of all ages. Please join us at St. James between 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. and B.Y.O.C. (bring your

own candy) if you wish! Deadline to sign up is Sunday, 11, 2017.

St. James Rocks! – BUT WAIT – THERE’S MORE! This month we will have not just one, but

TWO great Fellowship events!!! Phyllis Harbor is hos!ng St. James Rocks! on

Saturday, June 24, 2017 (!me TBD.) We will gather in the St. James under-

croD to paint rocks which you can keep or place outdoors to be found and

enjoyed by the community. Rocks, paint, brushes, sealer and other supplies

will be provided. Cost is $5.00 per person. Please bring your imagina!on and

a heavy appe!zer to share. Sign up deadline is Sunday, June 18.

The Fellowship Commi.ee

For where two or three are gathered in my name,

there am I among them.” ~Matthew 18:20 ESV

Anyone who knows me knows that I'm an avid hiker and birdwatcher. I

love to get out into Nature alone, to fill my senses with the beauty

of God's creation and let my soul catch up with me, as a friend of

mine puts it. I recently took an entire week off work to do just

that. It's the time of year when tiny colorful warblers are stopping

along the lakefront before heading to their summer grounds up north,

and I wanted to see as many as I could.

I've noticed that when I go out, it takes me a little while to settle

down, to calm my mind, and to get my 'bird eyes' and 'bird ears'

working. I need to make a transition from the faculties I have to use

out in the man-made world of busyness and noise to the ones that work

in the natural world. It's actually a lot like contemplative prayer.

In order to find and view the beautiful creatures I seek, I have to

slow way down, physically and mentally. It's necessary to move quiet-

ly and calmly. To be attentive to each flicker of shadow, each move-

ment of leaf, each subtle sound. To stop thinking and to get quiet in

every sense of the word. Sometimes when I first enter an area, I

don't see or hear anything, and I think to myself, "Rats, there's nothing here." But usually,

if I'm patient, and allow my 'bird eyes' and 'bird ears' to open, it's almost like magic - sud-

denly, there are birds all around me. What seemed like a 'dead' area springs to colorful life,

with birds fluttering and singing everywhere I turn.

Another thing I've noticed is, if I'm tense and anxious and "hunting" for a particular bird,

usually I don't find it. On one of my recent walks, I returned to an area of the woods where

I'd seen two desirable birds the day before - a Canada Warbler and possibly a Mourning Warbler.

I was so excited and eager to see them again and maybe get photos. I hurried to the spot and

looked and looked and looked and didn't find them. Though I found a bird I wasn't looking for,

an Ovenbird, which was a treat. At any rate, I finally gave up on the Canada and Mourning and

decided to head back out, figuring I'd see whatever I saw. I relaxed.

And maybe you can guess what I found in a completely unexpected spot, later in my walk? If you

guessed Canada Warbler and Mourning Warbler, you're right!

You might be thinking, "This is all well and good but what's it got to do with me? I'm not a

birder." Well, it occurred to me that seeking God is a lot like birding. God is everywhere, of

course. There is no place where He is not. But how often do we fail to see or hear Him? Caught

up in our busy lives and our worldly activities, maybe we don't have our "God eyes" and "God

ears" open, and we're missing out. What amazing things might He show us if we'll just slow down

and open up? And what kind of grace might He bestow on us instead of what we're expecting and

looking for? The Ovenbird made me think of that - it wasn't the bird I was after at that mo-

ment, but it was a great find, a complete surprise, an unexpected delight. I was grateful to

see it. And afterward, I did see the birds I'd been seeking, which offers another spiritual

lesson, I think - that our gratitude often opens the way for more gifts to be given to us.

I believe that God wants to surprise and delight us. Like the brightly colored warblers of

spring, He's all around us. But He isn't hiding. He wants us to find Him, and to be amazed by

Him. He is singing to us at this moment! Right this minute, He's there at your side! So take a

little time right now - slow down, breathe deeply, get quiet. Close your physical eyes and open

your "God eyes." Open your "God ears." Set your worldly cares aside for a bit. See if you can

hear the Lord of creation. He's singing to you.

The Lord your God in your midst,

The Mighty One, will save;

He will rejoice over you with gladness,

He will quiet you with His love,

He will rejoice over you with singing. -- Zephaniah 3:17 (NKJV)

Dear Members of St. James-

Over the past two years I have been working with several teachers in Belize under the direc!on of Dr.

Ma(hew Teare. Dr. Teare is an Early Childhood professor at Cleveland State as well as a member of

St. Luke’s parish in Chardon. This project has been sponsored by the Diocese of Ohio and is call the

“Science Success Program”. Well, this summer I am going to Belize with Dr. Teare as part of his staff

to run a “Science Success Summer Camp” for 75 children. Our dates for this adventure are July 8th

-

16th

. While this is exci!ng, there are costs to this adventure. The airfare, which is about $4,000.00 for

the 4 of us that will be a(ending, has been paid. However, Dr. Teare has challenged each member

going to add to the scholarship funds to sponsor the children that will be a(ending. So I am asking

the St. James parish to help me in raising funds for this unique opportunity. Below are the costs that

Dr. Teare has provided:

1. A full four days: $200.00- per students

2. One day: $50.00- per student

3. A half day: $25.00-per student

This money will be used to provide for the children the following: 16 lessons, breakfast and lunch

each day, school bus transporta!on, a camp T-shirt, and a science “treasure box” for each child.

Please send your dona!ons to Darrell Knapp at St. James who will forward the money raised to St.

Luke’s Episcopal Church.

Again, Thanks for any support you can give to this project.

“What’s Your 200?” Project

As part of the Episcopal Diocese of Ohio’s “What’s Your 200?” Project, St. James

Church delivered a grand total of 314 toiletry items to the VA Medical Center’s Paines-

ville Outpa!ent Clinic on West Jackson Street in early May. Among the items donated

were travel size soaps, tooth brushes, toothpaste, dental floss, hand sani!zers, combs,

brushes, deodorant, disposable razors, talcum powder, mouthwash, Kleenex, sham-

poo, condi!oner, and body lo!on.

We received a thank you le(er from Rachael Oberlander, Facility Director of the clinic,

which reads, in part,

“The dona!ons came at a perfect !me. The VA is hos!ng a “VA2K” event on Wednesday,

May 17, 2017. It is a 1.24 mile walk for Veterans and VA Employees to promote healthy liv-

ing, and also to collect dona!ons to support homeless and less fortunate Veterans.

This year it was decided to send all VA2K dona!ons to the Salva!on Army in Painesville, and

we thought it would be nice to donate your items along with the other dona!ons that were

raised at the event.

Thank you again for your dona!on. It is greatly appreciated.”

So, now our collec!on box is empty again! As you travel throughout

the summer or shop for toiletry items for

your home, please bring any unopened ho-

tel or travel size toiletry items to St. James and deposit

them in the large wooden box in the Narthex. We hope to

collect at least 200 more items before year end. Thank

you for your support for this ongoing project.

A Prayer for the Diocese

O God, by your grace you have called us in this Diocese to a goodly fellowship of faith. Bless our Bishops and other clergy, and all our people. Grant that your Word may be truly preached and truly heard, your Sacraments faithfully ad-ministered and faithfully received. By your Spirit, fashion our lives according to the example of your Son, and grant that we may show the power of your love to all among whom we live; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
