Letter from Pastor Covington
My fellow co-laborers in ministry and service, Merry Christmas!
Allow me as your servant leader to express my heartfelt thanks and ap-preciation for all of your work in the field of ministry. Because of your financial contributions in tithes, offerings, and sacrificial giving, and for your unfailing support of the church at large, we’ve been responsible and attentive with our stewardship. All of your work and efforts have not gone unnoticed and it is because of you we have had a prosperous year. I furthermore would like to thank this congregation for its constant support towards me in my roll as 3rd District Treasurer. Bishop McKinley Young saw fit to appoint me to this position, and I am thankful for our new Epis-copal leader Bishop Frank Madison Reid III, for respecting Bishop Young’s thoughtfulness and Episcopal opinion of my leadership abilities.
This conference year we were blessed to witness over 60 persons con-fessing Jesus Christ as their personal Lord and savior through the St. John Ministries. Although the year is not over I am expecting God to continue performing miracles in front of us. Amen.
In the form of an update, we’ve been busy this year as we addressed sev-eral areas of concern within St. John. We’ve addressed the water intru-sion in the basement which has now been rectified, and we were finan-cially able to fix some HAVAC issues and in the Fellowship Hall new chairs were purchased that totaled $20,842.00. None of this would have been possible had it not been for the dedicated work of our trustees. Be-nevolently this year we have given a total of $18,947.51, to which a por-tion of that money was donated to Wilberforce University. It is still an essential need that we continue our efforts in meeting the needs of those who need us the most.
In closing, I wish to remind you that God has done and is continuing to do great things here at St. John AME Church. Not only is God doing great things in our ministry but also in the lives of our membership. Peo-ple are constantly being healed, delivered, and blessed in more ways than one. It is because of God’s faithfulness and steadfast love toward us that I want to encourage you to join me as we seek God with this year’s vision for the church: “What am I here for? I need a Vision.” Proverbs 29:18 says “Where there is no vision, the people perish…” , let us continue to be strong in Jesus’ name, and let us collectively and individually pray and seek God for signs, miracles, wonders, and 2020 VISION!
Dr. Jermaine D. Covington, Servant Leader

January 6th through January 27th
Let us start 2020 with vision and with discipline.
Let’s begin this year fasting.
During this period St. John AMEC will be fasting and
praying. Information on the Daniel Fast and a food list
are included in the next pages.
If you’re unable to embrace the Daniel Fast
please set your fast for several hours a day
from certain foods, beverages, and conversations.
Join us and become renewed in
spirit, body and soul.

WHAT IS THE DANIEL FAST?
The concept of a Daniel fast comes from Daniel 1:8-14, “But
Daniel resolved not to defile himself with the royal food and
wine, and he asked the chief official for permission not to de-
file himself this way. Now God had caused the official to
show favor and sympathy to Daniel, but the official told Dan-
iel, ‘I am afraid of my lord the king, who has assigned your
food and drink. Why should he see you looking worse than
the other young men your age? The king would then have
my head because of you.’
Daniel then said to the guard, whom the chief official had
appointed over Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael and Azariah,
‘Please test your servants for ten days: Give us nothing but
vegetables to eat and water to drink. Then compare our ap-
pearance with that of the young men who eat the royal
food, and treat your servants in accordance with what you
see.’ So he agreed to this and tested them for ten days.”
The background of the Daniel fast is that Daniel and his three
friends had been deported to Babylon when Nebuchadnez-
zar and the Babylonians conquered Judah (2 Kings 24:13-
14). Daniel and his three friends were put into the Babylonian
court servant “training program.” Part of the program was
learning Babylonian customs, beliefs, laws, and practices.
The eating habits of the Babylonians were not in complete
agreement with the Mosaic Law. As a result, Daniel asked if
he and his three friends could be excused from eating the
meat (which was likely sacrificed to Babylonian false gods
and idols).
So, a Daniel fast is eating only fruits and vegetables for a cer-
tain amount of time and abstaining from meat products.
Some people use a Daniel fast as a dieting method. Some
people use a Daniel fast instead of fasting from food entirely.

Are you an aspiring author?
Have you been bless to author a book?

ing in St John's first Literary Artist
Exhibit! You can display, discuss
and sell your books! If interested,

ministrator, Charlowe Tyree
([email protected])! The

Blessings all! This is the day the Lord has
made, we will rejoice and be glad in it.
Happy New Year to everyone and
may God bless you with the best
year...2020 and the best decade ever!
This is your year to be the best YOU
possible!
Remember, tomorrow is not promised
us so whatever your goals, achieve them now then think of
some more, and achieve them! You have to do the work but it
is well worth it...guaranteed! Just keep saying, if it's to be, it's up
to me. Let that be your mantra for 2020 :)
To shake it up a bit for 2020, try a different form of exercise like
a treadmill class, try a different form of cooking your food like
an air fryer ( I got one for Christmas and I love it!) or an Instant
Pot, take a cooking class and whip up some a culinary master-
piece or just experiment with oh so many recipes on line or on
your cooking App.....the possibilities are endless :)
Oh, don't forget in 2020, you still want to get or strive to get
your 10,000 steps a day. Let's work on that starting now, in Jan-
uary. Ok? Don't talk about what you are going to do in 2020,
just do it! Actions do speak louder than words, really!
As has been noted before, January is Cervical Health Aware-
ness Month as designated by The United States Congress.
Nearly 13,000 women in the United States are diagnosed with
cervical cancer each year, but the disease is preventable with
vaccination and appropriate screening (Pap and HPV tests).
Cervical cancer was once a leading cause of death among
American women but that has
changed since screening tests be-
came widely available. Be smart
and get your necessary tests to
stay healthy.

Chicken Cutlets with Spring Vegetable Salad and Herb Vinaigrette
Ingredients HERB VINAIGRETTE • 1/4 cup canola oil ~ 1/4 cup extra-virgin olive oil • 3 tablespoons fresh lemon juice (from 1 lemon) • 1 tablespoon each chopped fresh flat-leaf parsley, tarragon, and chives • 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard ~ 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper • 1 medium shallot, coarsely chopped
SALAD • 4 (6-oz.) chicken breast cutlets ~ 1/2 teaspoon black pepper ~ 1 teaspoon kosher salt, divided • 1 large egg, lightly beaten ~ 1 cup (about 4 1/4 oz.) all-purpose flour ~ 3 tablespoons olive oil • 2 cups panko (Japanese-style breadcrumbs) ~ 12 ounces baby new potatoes, boiled and chilled • 1 (8-oz.) pkg. steam-in-bag French green beans ~ 6 ounces baby romaine leaves, washed and torn • 4 ounces sugar snap peas, sliced diagonally ~ 2 ounces baby arugula • 1 small Persian cucumber, sliced thinly (about 4 oz.) • 1 watermelon radish, thinly sliced and plunged into ice water to chill (about 4 oz.) • Lemon wedges, if desired
Instructions 1. Prepare the Herb Vinaigrette: Process all herb vinaigrette ingredients in a mini food processor until
almost completely smooth, leaving a few small pieces of herb and shallot visible. Set aside.
2. Prepare the Salad: Pat chicken cutlets dry with paper towels; sprinkle with pepper and 1/2 teaspoon
of the salt. Whisk together egg and remaining 1/2 teaspoon salt in a wide shallow dish. Add flour to a second wide shallow dish, and panko to a third. Bread chicken cutlets by first dredging in flour, then
dipping in egg mixture, then finally in panko, pressing to adhere panko to chicken surface. Place breaded cutlets on a plate. Heat oil in a large skillet over medium-high. Add breaded cutlets to hot oil,
and cook until golden brown and chicken is cooked through, about 2 minutes per side. Remove from skillet, and cover to keep warm.
3. Slice the boiled and chilled potatoes into 1/4-inch slices, and toss with 2 tablespoons of the vinai-grette. Prepare the green beans according to package directions. Set aside.
4. Toss together romaine, sugar snap peas, arugula, cucumber, radish, and 1/2 cup of the herb vinai-
grette in a large bowl. Divide dressed salad among 4 plates; add a chicken cutlet, and equal portions
potatoes and green beans. Drizzle each plate with 1 1/2 tablespoons vinaigrette, and serve with a lem-on wedge, if desired.
