MINISTER'S LETTER

Whilst out walking our two dogs Fred and Fliss around the churchyard the other day, I was excited to discover the empty shells of swallow’s eggs on the floor of the South porch. The eggs are tiny little things, not much bigger than the size of my small finger nail, and are white with brown speckles. The chicks that hatched out of them must be miniscule. I paused to listen for sounds of cheeping but couldn’t hear anything above the noise of a nearby strimmer. The eggs confirm that the swallows are nesting in our South Porch roof again, something which in spite of the mess they inevitably create, is to be celebrated. The South Porch is described as ‘modern’ in the online Claines History, though one might wonder how modern, since, like an early Foodbank, it contains the original poor boxes where bread was once left for impoverished parishioners. This south doorway would at one time have formed the main entrance to the church, although there was also a small entrance in the Lady Chapel (if you look at the outside wall of the Lady Chapel you can see where this used to be). But it’s the North Porch (the one nearest the road) which has been the subject of much discussion recently. At a recent site visit in church, organised by John Dentith, to which representatives from Historic England and the Diocesan Advisory Committee were invited, the idea of locating the proposed new toilet facility in the North Porch was given unofficial support by the authorities. Having considered various different places in the body of the church for the siting of a toilet we have come to the conclusion that the North Porch would offer us the best solution. We don’t envisage any changes to the outside appearance of the North Porch. The space would provide ample room for a discreet, wheelchair friendly toilet. With the North Door closed off, the South Door nearest the Mug would revert to its original status of primary entrance and exit. At this stage we are simply envisioning and there are obviously many questions we have to answer, not least the question of sewerage and drainage, and we have a long way to go regarding permissions and fundraising. But there are also questions regarding the impact of having only the one main entrance: how would we manage without the North Door at large services? What about Remembrance? What about the Ragbag container? How will this affect people with mobility issues? We have come to the conclusion that the only way to avoid making an expensive mistake is to conduct a trial consultation using only the South door. In June the PCC gave approval for a trial to go ahead from July through to October, and also for Remembrance. During this time, the North Porch doors will be kept locked and we will use only the South Door. The Vestry Door will also be unlocked at every event, for fire escape purposes and for access to the vestry by the choir and ministers. Please help us to make the most of the trial consultation. We want to know how this affects everyone. There is no perfect place for a toilet to go in a church, wherever we put it is a compromise. But last month, I heard of yet another elderly person who has had to stop attending church because there isn’t a toilet. We need a toilet. This project will be a long process, years most likely, but I do believe it will be worth it.

When you use the South Door, please look out for our swallows, who by October will be starting to migrate to their wintering grounds in Africa, Arabia and the Indian sub-continent. Did you know there are four verses in the Bible which refer to swallows? How about this one from Proverbs 26:2 “like a sparrow in its flitting, like a swallow in its flying, so a curse without cause does not alight.” Please be patient and positive during our trial, and please do pass on to me your constructive feedback. Praying that you and your loved ones will find sunshine, rest, joy and peace this summer. With every blessing,

WORCESTER SHOW 16TH AUGUST GHELUVELT PARK

This year people we will be joined by four local churches organising and staffing the North Worcester Churches Together Stall at this fabulous annual event. The four are: Albany Terrace United Reformed Church, Ombersley Road Methodist Church, Saint Stephen's and Saint George’s CE. The show opens at 10am and closes at 5pm and is a marvellous event. There is of course the grand Flower and Produce Show, but it is so much more than that. There are numerous stalls selling local crafts as well as stalls from local charities and societies. There is also a Main Stage where there is a programme of entertainment throughout the day. The Show is amazing. A real feast of colour, joy, and well being.

This year the theme of our Churches Together Stall is 'Water of Life' and we will yet again be giving away bottles of water to everyone who walks past, plus water for four legged friends! We will also be offering free activities for children and prayer activities for everyone. This year our Prayer Tent will be bigger than last year, enabling us to spend time praying with and for more people. Our aim is to simply be a blessing upon the people of Worcester. Please do come and visit us on 16th August. There will be no 10am service that morning at Saint George's as we will be worshipping at the Show.

CHILDREN'S WORSHIP

During June the first group of children to consider Holy Communion before Confirmation began their journey. Seven children are following a 6 session course which will, if they decide to, culminate in them celebrating First Holy Communion on Sunday 5th July at 11am. Please pray for the children as they travel on this important journey which we hope will be part of a lifelong journey with Jesus as their personal friend and saviour. By the time this article is published the new Youth Group will have met once in their new sessions on a Sunday evening in the Parish Hall with the young people from Saint George’s. They have a second session planned for July 12th and I would ask you to support the young people and the leaders with your prayers. Consideration is also currently being given to the format of the sessions for the younger children on Sunday mornings and there will be changes there too. Please pray for guidance for the leaders as we seek to bring the knowledge of the

love of Jesus to the children and their families. School holidays and summer are upon us from the middle of July and hopefully we will enjoy some lovely weather. This is the time when the children and their families are free from school and general routine. Many will be lucky enough to have a period of time away from home, recharging their batteries and doing lots of things they wouldn’t normally do. Others will have days out and visits from friends and relatives. We pray that these will be happy, memorable times for everyone. During this time there will not be any sessions in the Institute. We will have the usual All-age services in both July and August and there is always the children’s area for use during services. Children are always welcome to join us, just come along any Sunday, visit our website (www.clainesfriends.org.uk) or call me on 01905 754561 (or email [email protected]) for further details.

Thousands of Mothers’ Union members demonstrate the love of Christ through their volunteering in prisons, hospitals, schools, parents groups, parent & toddler groups, Sunday schools, food banks... the list is long and the activities lovingly carried out week in week out every year. Many more members spend time making things which are used to comfort or bring help to children and adults who are going through stressful times. Mothers’ Union’s ability to reach out in charity to improve and strengthen family and community life

would not happen without our volunteers.

And during Volunteers Week in June we celebrated their achievements. Our M.U. members at Claines are heavily involved in the running of Messy Church, Our members also lead the team that organises Little Fish and all the toddlers, mums and dads certainly appreciate the refreshments they provide from the kitchen at Little Friends. Their stalwart work every week in Children’s Worship Activities is wonderful. And when they are not doing all this you will find them in the choir, the church pulpit, raising funds for church, welcoming newly baptised children, cleaning the church, ensuring the smooth running of Services, serving you your coffee after services. The list is endless and we’re so grateful for all they do and that they also wear the Mothers’ Union badge.

Our July meeting is on Wednesday 8 July when we meet at 7.30pm for our summer walk followed by refreshments at a member’s home.

No meeting in August but on Wednesday 9 September at 7.30pm in the Institute, Reader John Butterworth will be our speaker on the subject of his “Day Job”.

All are welcome at our meetings. Further information from me on 451574.

NORTH CLAINES WI

The first meeting of a WI in the UK took place at Llanfair…PG on 16th September 1915 and at our June meeting we celebrated 100 years of the Women’s Institute in style. North Claines WI players took to the stage; we heard about the beginnings of the WI in Worcestershire; members’ reminisced and we saw magnified on screen photos

of times past and present of North Claines WI and its members. Our member, who had been at the Buckingham Palace Garden Party the day before along with many other WI ladies, came to the meeting wearing her beautiful finery (including her hat) and entertained us with details of her day which was certainly a day that will remain long in her memory. Needless to say we also enjoyed a selection of delicious homemade cakes with our cups of tea. Jenny Houghton will be talking to us about the day to day work of the charity “Send a Cow” at our meeting on 1st July at 7.15pm at Bishop Allenby Hall, Droitwich Road Worcester. Visitors are always welcome. More details may be found at www.northclaineswi.moonfruit.co.uk

CLAINES CHURCH FLOWER GUILD I would like to take this opportunity to thank all who supported our stall at the Strawberry cream tea Saturday in the church yard. We received a lot of lovely plants of which we sold quite a few and made some very useful money towards our flower fund. This will enable us to keep flowers in church all the year. Thanks also to Jill for all her help.

LINC LUNCHES We are in need of Volunteers to help in the kitchen and to help serve at our monthly lunches at the Church Hall. If you are able to help please contact either John Brady (01905 759702) or Pat Harris (01905 451305).

The June meeting proved very interesting when Miriam Harvey talked about the history of Worcester Royal Infirmary with slides of interest bringing back memories of how our hospitals were run, having matrons keeping everyone under control. It is nice to know that the building is still open to the public for tours which I think would be very interesting. We look forward very much to our next meeting on Wednesday 1st July when Linda Griffin will be taking us for "Stroll along the River Severn" in her talk that evening.

CHILDREN'S COMMUNION

Seven children are attending the preparation for Holy Communion classes, which are led weekly by myself and Ann Sansome and we have been having fun exploring what communion is all about. Please pray for Eva Mushen, Saul Mushen, Hannah Barlow, Joseph Briand, Ben Fazey, Charlotte Fazey and Maddie Palmer as they come to the end of their course. The celebration service for those who wish to take First Communion will be on Sunday 5th July at 11am. This will be a wonderful moment for them, do come and support them as they take this next step.

COMMUNITY CREAM TEA HELD SATURDAY 6TH JUNE 2015

Pudsey Bear's cousin “Sudsey”opened our Community Cream Tea and Teddy Bear Hunt on Saturday 6th June and was pleased to see so many children joining in a hunt for one of his distant relatives by taking part in a Teddy Bear Hunt around the churchyard. There were also a number of other children's activities taking place ably run by Jennifer from Little Friends While the children were having fun, their parents and families were able to relax by having a cup of tea and strawberry scone or cake while listening to some beautiful music played by Vanessa and Victoria in the church.

The queue in church for the delicious strawberry scones and other cakes on offer Outside church there were other stalls and the bottle tombola drew a crowd throughout the afternoon with Annie and Dave working hard to help winners find their prizes. The plant stall was a great success and it was nice to see people of all ages buying both vegetable and flower plants for their gardens.

Trade starting to build up Also on offer were a craft stall, a charity stall and our own Fair Trade stall making sure there was plenty of choice on display to tempt people to part with their cash! And part with their cash they did. The event, as well as being so well attended by “new” faces, helped the Events Team raise over £500.00 for church funds. Some of this money will be donated to the Flower Guild to help them continue with their excellent work decorating our lovely church with beautiful flowers. All of the above could not have been achieved without the help of our dedicated Events Team members and others within the church community who helped bring items to church, put up bunting, helped on stalls, moved chairs and tables, took down bunting and finally ensured the church and churchyard were left neat and tidy for services the following day.

OUR NEW CURATE - ESSENTIAL READING

How did I get here? Good question. For that I need to tell you about Fr Jim Eckersley. One Sunday morning, Trinity 12 in 1959, I rolled up at my local church, All Saints Kings Heath. I had gone by myself, voluntarily, to see what it was like. Before that my parents took me to the very early morning ‘said’ services for the major Feasts, and that was just about it. But this was completely my own decision. Unsure of what to do, where to sit, me, this little lad in short trousers, eleven years old, was welcomed at the door by Fr Jim. He asked me which school I went to, and took me to sit with others whom I would know. I am here at Claines and Saint George’s for one simple reason, one man: Fr Jim. He took the time and trouble to welcome and make me feel at home … The journey started there on that morning.

And what a journey to ordination! If you think Moses took a long time to get ‘there’, try this. I was first asked in 1962 to consider whether I was being called to ordained ministry. It didn’t seem the right time then, but throughout the following years there was a cadence of being brought back to that question; God wouldn’t go away and wouldn’t let go.

As ever, it was people taking the time to talk to me, to tell me about their faith in Christ Jesus. It was the magnet that there was something different about them that led me to discover who was the person who had changed their lives. Three faithful Christian colleagues at work brought me to that place where I re-found my faith and the journey got underway again.

The environment that I worked in was marvellous, often pressured, and with

colleagues who were absolutely trustworthy and good for their word. This was the City of London of years past where the DNA of straight dealing that was ingrained in us has not always been so apparent in more recent years. The opportunity to work in Madrid came about and we lived there during the early post-Franco years of the new democracy in Spain. It was good to have been there, though at times frightening with high levels of terrorism. They were positive years for that country of finding a new voice in the world and setting aside the long years of dictatorship. I still keep up my Spanish and use it from time to time for the diocesan link with Perú. It was a great honour to visit the country in 2010 as part of the link and be radically affected by how our sisters and brothers in Christ there engage in mission and in seeking the kingdom of God.

Whilst all the long discernment process for my ministry was happening, I trained as a Reader and was admitted in 2000 in Chelmsford Diocese and served in the parish where we then lived in South Shoebury. The move to Worcester came about in 2001 when it was important to be closer to family members who lived in the county. And so we came to All Saints, Worcester, then about to embark on its ‘experiment’ to plant a new congregation in the existing and faithful but very small number that were sustaining it.

My career in the financial world set in train a continuing interest in the theology and ethics of money—the root of the 2008 global financial crisis is found in one thing alone: the sin of idolatry of money. After coming to live in Worcester, I completed the University of Oxford’s Master in

Page 16: ST. JOHN BAPTIST CLAINES September 2014

12

Theology degree, which examined town centre mission through the radical use of sacred space. Our buildings can identify with our communities, and vice versa, and become full players in the mission of God.

Some years ago, I was part of the group that sensed God calling for ministry to the commercial workplace in Worcester. It was Christians in the workplace who supported me those years ago; hence this continues to be important to me now. I shall continue to serve with the Worcester City Centre Chaplaincy team calling on those working in the retail sector and being part of the Kingdom journey of discovering God’s presence ‘out there’.

In the three years until my ordination as Deacon in 2013 I was a Lay Canon of Chapter of Worcester Cathedral, prior to which I had been an Honorary Lay Canon. The hospitality and the worship of the Cathedral are important witnesses to the life of the Kingdom and I maintain my connection as a Day Chaplain and occasional midweek celebrant. Coming to Worcester brought me into contact with the Church’s ministry of healing and wholeness. This is so important a witness to the presence of Christ in everyone’s lives and one that embraces all our communities in every aspect of life and it is a continuing honour to serve in this ministry.

What’s my churchmanship? It used to be a bit of a demon, but I’ve buried it never to rise again. But if

you ask, I’ll tell you I’m an ‘Anglo-Celto-Geli-Matic’. In other words, I treasure the diversity of Anglican spirituality: ‘It’s whom we worship that counts!’

I’ve been able to get back into a hobby from childhood years, astronomy, so when the nights are clear, it’s on with the thermals and off outside. Indoors, I’m into stained glass creations and I play saxophones and look forward to ‘getting my lip back’ (that’s a techie term for actually doing some practice and playing better!). Rosemary is my wife—fantastic, brilliant and everything else, and we have two adult daughters and a granddaughter … and a wonderful Labrador. And there’s one addiction—coffee.

The Bishop's Certificate is a course designed to help you learn more about the Bible and the great themes of Christian faith and life and to relate these to your own experience and locality. It will encourage you to explore and reflect as you learn with - and from - the other people on your course. It's also a great way to get to know people from neighbouring churches and different Christian traditions. No academic qualifications are required, just enthusiasm, interest, an open mind and the willingness to commit yourself to attending the whole course, as well as to learning in a group. Each course consists of 30 sessions lasting up to 2 hours, usually run on a weekly basis. Please see Rev. Jo or one of the churchwardens if you are interested.

A CELTIC BLESSING FROM THE 1ST CENTURY

You are the peace of all things calm You are the place to hide from harm You are the light that shines in dark You are the heart's eternal spark You are the door that's open wide You are the guest who waits inside You are the stranger at the door You are the calling of the poor You are my Lord and with me still You are my love, keep me from ill You are the light, the truth, the way You are my Saviour this very day. Amen.

ST. WILLIBALD - NEVER HEARD OF HIM!

Where do you go on your summer travels? If you enjoy including a Christian element to your trips, such as making a pilgrimage, or visiting places rich in Christian history, then Willibald is the saint for you this month. He was one of the most widely travelled Anglo-Saxons of his time. Willibald began life in Wessex, becoming a monk at Bishops Waltham (Hants). But he obviously had the curiosity that besets all keen travellers – what is it like over there…just over the next hill, round the next corner? And so Willibald set out… for Rome, Cyprus, Syria and above all, Palestine. It was an amazing achievement, just to survive such journeys back in the early 8th century. In Palestine, Willibald made his way round all the Holy Places associated with Jesus, as well as the numerous communities of monks and hermits living there. On his eventual return to Europe, Willibald decided to tell his

Page 18: ST. JOHN BAPTIST CLAINES September 2014

14

story. He dictated an account of all his travels to a long-suffering nun, Hugeburc, who wrote it up under the title of Hodoeporicon – the first ever travel book to be written by an Anglo-Saxon. After a long stay in Constantinople, 730 AD found Willibald back in Rome, where he settled at the monastery at Monte Cassino. Under his reforming influence, the monastery began to prosper. That got Willibald ‘noticed’, and soon Boniface asked Pope Gregory III to send him on to Germany, where Willibald was made bishop of Echstatt. Here he founded a monastery which became an important centre for the diffusion and development of monasticism.

After 45 years as Bishop at Echstatt, Willibald died in c. 786 AD. His relics remain there till this day. Apparently, we "celebrate" his day on 7th July. Well fancy that!
